Setting models is a work in progress. This page is currently being edited. Please consider helping the users to complete the page and fill in the missing pieces if you are able.


This is a list of real life buildings, places and other surroundings Gosho Aoyama used as reference models for the settings appearing in his works. Please see this list here as an active work in progress. What you'll do with this information in the end is up to you - maybe you can use this knowledge for a fan fiction or go on one of those Manga/Anime pilgrimages when you are in Japan. Every series will be partitioned by medium (since the position of the same building or place in a franchise differs from medium to medium sometimes).

There will be mentions of the different (real) wards (-ku) of Tokyo and the towns (-chō) they are composed of respectively a lot, which can get quite complicated and confusing if you are not knowledgable about the geography of Tokyo and how this city is administrated. Below you can see a very good map from TokyoMap.com, giving you a quick and simple rundown of the structure of its wards.

Company President's Daughter Case (Manga: 2-5)

The Yayoi District Kogoro and Ran Mouri as well as Conan Edogawa drive to for this case and where the Tani family lives is a real district of Tokyo in the Bunkyō Ward.

Futatsubashi Middle School the kidnapper keeps Akiko Tani at is a play on the real Hitotsubashi Middle School in Chiyoda Ward ("hitotsu" = "one", "futatsu" = "two"). Furthermore, the Hyakujii Park the kidnapper wants his ransom money placed in is based on the name of the Shakujii Park Gosho Aoyama once lived close to during his time when he lived in the Nerima Ward and which he often visited in his spare time.[1]

Code Sheet Case (Manga: 36-39)

The Detective Boys take a bus on the real To06 line (都06) of Toei Bus to get from Beika (or, rather, a bus stop close to Beika Park, it seems) to Tokyo Tower. The line indeed leads from Shibuya Station through the Minato Ward, passed the Tower and has its final destination at Shimbashi Station. As this, it's one of the most direct hints about where Beika may be set in the world of the Manga. The complete route can be seen as a green line on the map.

"Tohto Tower" in that same case of course is Tokyo Tower in anything but name.[2] It goes on to become a recurring location, implied to be very close to Beika and Haido, maybe even part of it in the world of Detective Conan. It also features as the background photo on the front cover of Volumes 36 and 93.

The "PAPCO" building the Detective Boys reach during their treasure hunt in FILE.38 is modeled after the PARCO Store, part of the east side of Ikebukuro Station (Ikebukuro, Toshima Ward, Tokyo) in real life.

Pro Soccer Player Case (Manga: 69-71)

Hideo Akagi and his team are playing their soccer match in the Tokyo National Stadium (Kasumigaoka Town(jp), Shinjuku Ward), also known as Kokuritsu Kyōgijō, as it is called in the chapters, too. The real stadium has been restructured since then and looks vastly different than at the time it was featured in Detective Conan.

Follow the Voice!! (Manga: 82)

The "Yotsubishi Gas" station is a play on the (once) real Mitsubishi Gas stations, including a fitting four-petaled logo (instead of the usual three-petaled one) - but considering that there are roughly thousands of gas stations in and around Tokyo who all look similar or identical, and the fact that none of them have that same name anymore (most of it seems to be Nippon Oil by now) and that this was over two decades ago, it's safe to assume that it will be extremely difficult or impossible to ever find the specific model for this exact one.

TV Station Murder Case (Manga: 102-104)

The headquarters of Nichiuri TV are based on the previous main headquarters of Nippon TV in Niban Town](jp) of Chiyoda Ward.

Moon, Star, and Sun Case (Manga: 111-113)

Kurisuke Agasa's old mansion is modeled after the "Ohana Estate" mansion in Yanagawa City, located in the Fukuoka Prefecture.

Kaitou Kid and the Black Star (Manga: 156-157)

The surroundings seen from the roof Conan Edogawa and Kaitou Kid have their first meeting on, including Tokyo Tower and the Shiroyama Trust Tower(jp) to the left and, hence, the position of Haido City Hotel, are identical with those of the ANA Intercontinental Tokyo Hotel in the Akasaka District of Minato Ward. Apart from that, Gosho Aoyama used a different, so far unidentified model for the hotel itself.

Disappearing Mitsuhiko 1 (Manga: 358+)

This is probably the one most people on here already know: Beika Station, appearing from FILE.358 onwards is based on Shin-Ōkubo Station, just like in the movies, in real life built in Hyakunin Town of Shinjuku Ward. Contrary to the movies, though, it isn't on vaguely the same position as the real train station, but closer to the Ebisu and Gotanda Districts on the border between the wards Shibuya, Minato and Shinagawa in the manga.

Vampire's Mansion (Manga: 834-840)

The house of the Torakura family is modeled after a house in Kyu-Furukawa Gardens - only one of several allusions to [Wikipedia:Umineko When They Cry|Umineko no Naku Koro ni]] in this case (besides Dracula, of course), since the entrance of the guest house of that franchise was also designed like it. While the Torakura mansion is said to be on the border of Saitama and Gunma Prefectures, the real building and its surrounding park are actually situated in the Nishigahara District of the Kita Ward in Tokyo. Fittingly, it's also said to be a popular filming location for horror movies.

It also serves as the background photo of Volume 79's front cover.

Drug Trading Case (Manga: 879-881)

The Ebisu Bridge Conan Edogawa goes to ("secretly" being followed by Ai Haibara and the Detective Boys) is a real bridge in the eponymous Ebisu District of Shibuya Ward in Tokyo. Interestingly, it's implied to be in or near Beika in Conan's world, considering they were on the way to Professor Hiroshi Agasa's house and went to the bridge by foot. The name of the bridges also play a bigger role during this case.

Aquarium Murder Case (Manga: 882-884)

Beika Aquarium is modeled after the Toba Aquarium in the City of Toba in Mie Prefecture.

Kite-Flying Competition Murder Case (Manga: 885-887)

The place Professor Hiroshi Agasa, Conan Edogawa, Ai Haibara and the Detective Boys drive to is the Horikirimizube Park at the first block of the Horikiri District(jp) in the Katsushika Ward of Tokyo, with the Arakawa doubling as Teimuzu River in Detective Conan. The aforementioned park indeed is a popular spot for kite flying competitions in real life.

The bridge sporting these distinct Y-shaped concrete pylons seen several times next to the park in the same case, on the other hand, is the Shin-Arakawa Bridge spanning the Arakawa at Horikirimizube.

The Sealed Move (Manga: 899)

The Tokiwa Hotel Shuukichi Haneda stays at at the beginning of the case is a real hotel and it really is situated in the Yamanashi Prefecture (in its capital Kōfu, to be exact), like it's said in the chapter.

Shogi Tournament/Poolside Case (Manga: 899-905)

Hotel Haido Pride, in which Masumi Sera and Mary stay during FILE.899-905, is modeled after the Hotel Nikko Fukuoka in the namesake city, in real life located in the prefecture of the same name.

The Forbidden Move (Manga: 901)

The shōgi building from the flashback is the real Shōgi Kaikan of Tokyo, located at building 39 in the second block of the Sendagaya District, Shibuya Ward.

Kamaitachi Murder Case (Manga: 909-912)

The Kamaitachi Inn is modeled after the Echigoya Ryokan(jp) in Narai (Shiojiri City), in the midst of the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, at an old route between Tokyo (Edo back then) and Kyoto - so the description about the Kamaitachi Inn being "in the mountains of Nagano" in the manga is certainly true for its reference building.

Girls Band Murder Case (Manga: 936-938)

Sound Studio HAKOBUNE is based on Sound Studio NOAH Shinjuku in building 10 of the second block of the Nishi-Shinjuku District, Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. There are several Sound Studio NOAH branches in Tokyo, including another one in Shibuya Ward, but the Shinjuku one is the correct model.

The Spiteful Old Man (Manga: 945)

The "Studio AITA" Yumi Miyamoto and Miwako Sato pass at the beginning of the case is actually Studio ALTA in the south of Shinjuku Ward, located in the district(jp) of the same name. One can also spot the LUMINE EST Department Store behind them in the panel right after it, which is across Studio ALTA in real life.

Kaitou Kid and the Luna Memoria Case (Manga: 963-965)

The Suzuki Library which Kaitou Kid tries to get into is actually the library building of the Kagoshima University in Kagoshima on Japan's Kyushu Island.

Edo Style Deduction Show (Manga: 977)

The Police Station 5th Block Beika after the end of the case is actually the Police Station 5th Block Sendagaya, a real Kōban in the Shibuya Ward of Tokyo.

Eri's SOS (Manga: 986)

The cinema Kogoro Mouri and Eri Kisaki go to at the end of the case is modeled after the Cinemas Q in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, actually on the island of Kyushu. Judging by the Suzuki Library, it seems like Gosho Aoyama or someone he knows did research there not all too long before those chapters.

Kendo Tournament Murder Case (Manga: 990-993)

The kendō tournament Heiji Hattori, Soshi Okita and Takeshi Onimaru partake in during this case is organized in Tohto Gymnasium, which is based on the real Nakano Gymnasium, located at building 11 in the fourth block 4 of the Nakano District(jp) in the ward of the same name in Tokyo.

Haibara's Lost Phone Strap Case (Manga: 997-999)

Conan Edogawa, Ai Haibara and the Detective Boys are taking a ride with a train of the JR East E233-3000 series on the real Shōnan-Shinjuku Line in FILE.997, passing an existing segment of the route located in Gotanda before the train enters Beika Station. One can spot, from left to right, the NTT COMWARE Gotanda Building (ＮＴＴコムウェア五反田ビル), Mast Life Meguro South (マストライフ目黒南) and the Meguro Gajoen Arco Tower to the left of the tracks.

The lost-and-found office in Chiyari Station (which seems to be fictitious itself) at the end of the same chapter is based on the real lost-and-found office of Tokyo Metro (with an altered emblem in Detective Conan) at Iidabashi Station, which is situated right on the juncture of the Chiyoda, Bunkyō and Shinjuku Wards in Tokyo.

The "Danny's" Rei Furuya, Conan and the Detective Boys are stopping by to eat and discuss their hunt for the phone strap at the beginning of FILE.998 is a real Denny's restaurant - the one in building 6 at the first block in Yokohama's Kitayamada District in the Tsuzuki Ward ([[Wikipedia:Kanagawa Prefecture|Kanagawa Prefecture]), to be specific. Considering Rei must have passed Yokohama to reach Chiyari Station, it's a fitting location to stop.

Crimson School Trip Case (Manga: 1000-1005)

The Kiyomizu-dera appearing in Files 1000, 1004 and 1005 is supposed to be the real deal in the Higashiyama Ward of Kyoto.

Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo stay at the Ritz-Carlton Towers High Hotel of Los Angeles, located at 900 W Olympic Blvd., in FILE.1005.

Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo arrive in Tokyo and meet their fan at the Haneda Airport, which is situated in the Ōta Ward.

The Beika University Hospital Kazunobu Chiba carries Naeko Miike to at the end of the case is modeled after the Juntendo University Hospital(jp) in the Hongō District of [[Wikipedia:Bunkyō|Bunkyō Ward] in Tokyo.

Kaitou Kid and the Fairy's Lip (Manga: 1018-1021)

The Suzuki Museum is modeled after the Tokyo National Museum in the Ueno Park inside the district of the same name, located in the Taitō Ward of Tokyo.

Substitute (Manga: 1022)

The cinema showing "The Azengers" Conan Edogawa, Ran Mouri, Sonoko Suzuki, Makoto Kyogoku and Masumi Sera are leaving right at the beginning of the case is a real building of the Toho Cinemas chain in Roppongi Hills, located in the Minato Ward of Tokyo.

The Eyes of a Detective (Manga: 1027)

The train Conan Edogawa, Kogoro Mouri, Rei Furuya and Kanenori Wakita ride at the beginning of the case is a limited express Azusa train that plies between Shinjuku Station in Tokyo to Matsumoto Station in Nagano (like it's told in the case), with the model number changed from "35" to "36" for some reason.

In the background of the panel you can spot the Yatsugatake Mountains, while the train passes a real segment of the line in Yamanashi Prefecture between Nagasaka and Kobuchizawa Stations, which is a popular place to take photos of these trains (like the one on the left).

Collecting Edible Wild Plants (Manga: 1032)

The Minanokami Station in Gunma the Detective Boys arrive at together with Miss Kobayashi and Wakasa Rumi is actually the Minakami Station in the town of the same name (also in Gunma in real life).

Lover Code Case (Manga: 1039-1042)

Haido Port is practically identical to the real life Hinode Pier at the border between Minato (which it belongs to) and Chiyoda Wards. The warehouses on the right (and the one the case happens in) are the Hinode Pier Warehouses (Second block, Kaigan District, Minato Ward, Tokyo) - in real life, the ones on the panel/photo are numbered 2-A, 2-B, 2-C, etc., in Detective Conan, they are simply given numbers. Judging by their manga and real life succession, No. 4 (where the murder happens in) should correlate with warehouse 2-D.

Furthermore, the ship in front of the other one Ran Mouri, Kazuha Toyama and Momiji Ooka photograph themselves in front of in the last chapter of this case is the "Silver Muse" of the Silverseas company, which actually passes (or passed - it seemingly moved to Canada afterwards) the Hinode Pier on its route when it arrives in Tokyo after leaving Yokohama to the north - just like it passed Haido Port in Detective Conan. The "identity" of the other ship is still unknown, though.
