Part 1
The Detective Boys are invited to the Konno residence for a barbecue as thanks for solving a case for them earlier. When the couple argue, the children grow concerned. Later, the husband cannot find his cell phone so his wife goes with him inside to look.

| After the couple went inside the house, Ayumi saw the wife threaten her spouse with a knife. Shortly later she was stabbed in the chest. Is this self-defense?

Resolution
The wife, Sumika, tried to scare the husband to cure his hiccups, with the evidence being the recorded voicemail which proves that the "attempted murder" was an act. It was at a bad time since the couple had been arguing. The husband, Takushi Konno, was angry at his wife's over the top eccentric behavior and the wife believed he was cheating on her. The husband planned to kill her by faking hiccups, her using a knife to scare him, and him using the knife to kill her in "self-defense". However, after doing it and her surviving, he becomes regretful and tries to commit suicide.
Conan reveals the content of messages that Sumika had sent to Takushi's friends and female co-workers wasn't a threat or invective, but in fact to take care of her husband in place of her when inviting him on a trip due to his rare blood type, and to offer counseling and advice to the females as a fellow women. Because of this, the friends stop inviting Takushi on a trip due to them not wanting him to risk injury, while the females stop associating with him due to them having ulterior motive related to adultery. He also explains that her recent behavior is because she is pregnant. Despite Takushi's crime, Conan is willing to let it slide for the child's sake of having both parents. The police attribute the case to an unfortunate accident while trying to cure the hiccups and the Konnos make amends. Afterwards, Haibara expresses her anger over the husband not thinking about how his wife could be pregnant and for Conan not turning him in.
Manga to anime changes
- In the anime version, Tooru Amuro's background image was omitted when Masumi told Ran and Sonoko that she also wanted to meet him, not only Conan.
