Situation
When a body is discovered in a bonfire at a ritual Fire Festival by a tourist, the murder investigation begins.

And when Kogoro finds out that the victim is the same man that he had been tailing for the past three days, he realizes that he has been had. The man who hired Detective Mouri uses his testimony to create the perfect alibi. But Kogoro is sure that his client is the guilty one, and Conan agrees. Can Conan crack the case before this prime suspect leaves the country or will he get away with murder?

Manga to anime changes
The manga version of the story sets up Conan being in school, as well as introducing his newly created Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes (which he tries while playing soccer while at the grade school soccer field). Additionally, this case takes place much, much earlier in the manga, being the fourth case in the series.

Trivia
- The name of the culprit, "Yutaka Abe", comes from the name of one of Gosho Aoyama's first assistants, Yutaka Abe.
- The first time that Kogoro tails a murder victim.
- The first time that Conan has been choked.
- This case takes several days, including at a Fire Festival.
- Although we know that Kogoro has tailed people before, this is the first time that he is shown to follow someone for a client.
- Agasa told Ran that Conan's parents "Got out of the hospital, but they had a job transfer overseas. They left just yesterday," as well as "They said that once they've settled down, they'll get in touch."
- Conan was complaining about how long it has been, and still no information on the "men in black."
- In this episode Kogoro begins to notice that whenever, he is stuck, Conan gives him 'little' hints to help him solve the case, as in "These pictures are strange. They all have clocks. He must like clocks."
- Kogoro's newfound suspicion is thrown off, when Conan opens another folder of pictures, and mixes up the pictures, and says, "Kids will be kids,"
- This is the first episode to show that Kogoro abused Conan at least twice in the same case.
- This is the first case that Conan phoned Kogoro, using Megure's voice, and phoned Megure, using Kogoro's voice to lead them somewhere specific, where they will both be able to catch the culprit.
- This is the first case to be solved at an airport.
- This is the first episode that Conan bites the culprit.
- This is the first episode that Conan kicks a tire at the culprit.
- This is the the first time that Conan taped a confession from the culprit.
- This is the first case that the culprit told the police, "This was done by a kid," which made Kogoro and Ran look at Conan (pretending to sleep on the couch), who was the only kid around at the time.
