Gin calls the second plan off when he discovers Conan's tracker and suspects Kogoro of planting it. As the Black Organization members, Korn and Chianti prepare to fire at Kogoro, they are interrupted by Conan kicking a soccer ball from the Benz CLK Cabrio into Kogoro's window and Shuichi Akai's sniper shots. Thus, Kogoro is saved at the last second by a double effort from Conan and Shuichi Akai, and the Organization is made to believe the FBI planted the tracker. The Organization escapes, and Rena is hospitalized with the FBI guarding her in her comatose state, while Conan uses Rena's voice to give her an extended holiday, so as to keep Rena's location a secret from the Black Organization. Later that day, Conan tells Haibara that with Rena, they will have a lead on the Black Organization.
Remastered version
A remastered version of this case was aired on March 19, 2016 and March 26, 2016 and April 2, 2016 and April 9, 2016. The original 2.5-hour episode was split into four smaller episodes.
Manga to anime changes
- The scenes where Chianti and Korn are shown practicing their sniping skill with virtual targets and Vermouth observing Kiriko Busujima at the beginning of the anime episode are not from the original manga.
- In addition, a scene with a shadow looking Rena's apartment, which has been revealed that it was Jodie spying Rena Mizunashi, and a hint that was Kimiwa, found in the adjoining apartment, and that was actually Miwako Takagi was written by Detective Takagi while observed a suspect's girlfriend, both are also exclusive from anime.
- When Jodie shoots the sprinklers to stop the Black Organization snipers, Kir hears the silenced gunshots. In the manga, Kir just turns her head slightly to see the broken sprinkler. In the anime, she turns her whole body towards the sprinkler in order to look which was an animation mistake. Her pin is a camera and would have broadcast the video of Jodie and the broken sprinkler to Gin, Vodka and Vermouth.
- There is a recap in the beginning of the anime version.
Quotes
As expected of the child that you have yours eyes on. It almost makes me want to scout him for the bureau. — James Black (talking to Jodie in the car with Conan in the backseat)
Trivia
- This is the second 2 and a half Hour Special. Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night was the first.
- Akai's scope shot against Gin is evidently a silent hommage to the most notorious accomplishment of Carlos Hathcock, a famed US Marine sniper who served in the Vietnam War.
- Akai's Accuracy International Arctic Warfare rifle is a right handed version. By shooting it left-handed, operating the right-side bolt would be very clumsy and the spent cartridge would be ejected towards his face rather than away.
- The recap in the beginning references Roller Coaster Murder Case, The Girl from the Black Organization and the University Professor Murder Case, The Black Organization: One Billion Yen Robbery Case, Reunion with the Black Organization, Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night, and The Four Porsches.
- In one of the scenes where Chianti and Korn are practicing their sniping skills, all the signs are misspelled as "Sanate" instead of "Senate."
- In one scene, Professor Agasa drove by a direction sign bearing the names Ogata, Takayama and Hayashibara. This may be a reference to Kenichi Ogata, Minami Takayama and Megumi Hayashibara, the voice actors for Professor Agasa, Conan and Haibara respectively.
- Tatsuzo Watanuki in Sonoko's Red Handkerchief is from the same yakuza group as Kiriko Busujima, Deisan-kai.
- Different vehicles used by characters :
- Vermouth's 2003 Harley Davidson V Rod ;
- Domon's bodyguard's horizon blue metallic 2006 Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse [W221] ;
- Tim's old grey metallic 1999 Volvo S80 T6 Gen.1 [TS] ;
- Kir's yellow 2005 Yamaha XG 250 Tricker.
- For this special alone, almost, if not every single subtitled version that I can find, seems to call Rena Mizunashi "Lena" in this episode, however, the remaining episodes, it is using her name of Rena instead. I have yet to find a subtitle of this special that uses the name Rena for her.
- This case introduces three new Black Organization members: Chianti, Korn, and Kir.
- Chianti is a wine produced in the Chianti region of Central Tuscany.
- Korn is also known as Kornbrand or Grain Brandy, and is a German colorless distilled beverage.
- Kir is a popular French cocktail made with a measure of crème de cassis (blackcurrant liqueur) topped up with white wine.
- This is the case that Kogoro appeared on Yoko's 4 minute cooking show with her.
- Yoko Okino has a pink cellphone.
- Rena lived in a mansion in Haido City, and has 4 locks on her door.
- When Rena offered Kogoro, Ran, and Conan drinks, this is one of the few times that Kogoro asked for Coffee instead of all-time favorite drink, alcohol.
- This case reveals that Takagi is trying to teach Megure how to call internal lines at the precinct.
- After dialing the Boss, Rena walked past a white car with 12-08 license plate, which happens to be her own car.
- Rena has a yellow or gold cellphone case with a dark blue cell phone.
- Sniper range of the following snipers: Chianti is 600 yards, Korn is 550 yards, although he may also have 600 yards too, however only 550 yards is shown, and Shuichi Akai is 700 yards at least.
- Chianti and Korn's car has license plate of 9-25.
- Jodie's foreign car had 80-23 license plate, which will be driven by James later.
- This is the first case that Conan encountered Jodie since Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night. although Haibara encountered her in Find the Buttock's Mark.
- This is the case that Jodie noticed that Conan had two identical cell phones.
- This is the first case that Gin uses the term, "sheep," when he told Chianti, "Don't kill any unrelated sheep, just because you're bored."
- Although Conan has been shown to be a superb bluffer, this is the first case that shows that he is unable to tell a convincing lie to save his life.
In short, great bluffer, lousy liar.
- This is the first case that Conan encountered James Black since The Man from Chicago case, and in this case, he finds out that he is also F.B.I. too, and in fact, that James is Jodie's boss.
- Kir's motorcycle has 96-07 license plate.
- Vodka is apparently unaware that listening devices can cause serious noise on cell phones, unlike Gin, who pays attention to noise or static over the cellphones in order to discover if one has been bugged.
- This is the first case that Kogoro was a target by the Black Organization, although he was saved by first Conan, and then Shuichi Akai, who saved both, when even the kid would have been killed by the snipers, simply for interfering in their hit. Although the Black Organization had not pulled the trigger at either one in this case, however, it was just short of it.
- Shuichi Akai shot the transmitter to make Gin think that they were planted by the F.B.I.
- Vermouth's Harley has a license plate of 8-64.
- Domon's car has a 10-83 license plate.
- This is the first case that James and Jodie saw Conan used his Anywhere Ball Dispensing Belt and his Power-Enhancing Kick Shoes.
- This is the case that Gin becomes suspicious of Kogoro Mouri.
- Conan's 7 Children Alertness seems to be in overdrive and act up every time that he sees someone use a cellphone, however it really kicks in when Rena dials the Boss's e-mail address in this case creating the near panic mode that this number instills in him. Making him even more alert is also discovering 2 more Black Organization members are involved , and an assassination plot as well. In short, as well as hearing this melody being dialed, he also hears an assassination plot, and discovers that a total of 6 Black Organization Members are nearby. Although this newfound alertness will kick in when he hears this melody, this is really the only case where it is in overdrive. The very fact that this is the very first time that Conan hears someone dial the Boss's e-mail address since Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night may have a lot to do with him being on edge every single time that he sees someone with a cellphone.
- Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886 novella.
- When Rena says that, "I had a little brother of that age, back in the days," she is referring to her little brother.
- Although this newfound alertness was on overdrive, Conan's 7 Children Alertness kicked in the very second that Conan heard Rena dial the Boss's e-mail address, and from that point on, it is more centered on those exact notes for that melody, which causes his scared demeanor after hearing that tune, which helps end the cell phone paranoia which he appeared to be feeling since Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night, when Vermouth dialed that number.
- Although this information has never been stated in any case, however, sometime offscreen, between this case and Jodie's next case, Jodie probably gave Conan her cell phone number, since he will begin to call her in the not so distant future. I like to say, he has her on speed-dial.
- This is the case that Vermouth suspected, or at least, asked Kir, if she was a NOC, to which the answer was denying it.
- This is the first case that Akai sees Conan since Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night, and he also saw Conan speak through the Voice-Changing Bowtie over the phone, however he may not have picked up that Conan was speaking in Rena's voice through the hospital window.
