Part 1

At the Detective Agency, Conan is on the phone talking to Heiji about a restaurant's opening party. Heiji invites Conan, Ran, and Kogoro to come to the party, and says that three famous athletes from America are also going to be there.

In Osaka at the K3 Restaurant, Kogoro is very excited to meet Mai Kuraki, Miho Komatsu, TWO-MIX, and his favorite idol, Yoko Okino.

The lights turn off, and the announcer welcomes the three famous American athletes, treating them as special guests. The three athletes are a former heavyweight boxing champion, Ricardo Barreira. Next is the major leaguer who pitches 160 km, Mike Norwood. Lastly, the goalkeeper known as the "Iron Wall of Europe", the pro soccer player named Ray Curtis. When Conan was Shinichi, he used to be a huge fan of Ray Curtis, and as a result is very excited to see him in person. The announcer then says that he will ask the three athletes a few questions. First, the announcer asks why they chose Japan to open their restaurant. Ray answers that it's because Japan is like a second home to them. Ray's wife and Mike's wife are both Japanese and Ricardo just loves ninjas and samurais. Next, the announcer asks does the "K" in the restaurant's name, "K3", mean "Kings". Ray says that is incorrect, what it really stands for is: The first is a Knockout, the K from KO in boxing. The next is a "Strikeout", represented by a K in baseball. The last is a "Goalkeeper", keeper starts with K in soccer. Suddenly, the news reporter named Ed McCay who was invited to the K3 Restaurant asks that is Japan not the home of many scandals, and mentions that K stands for "kitanai" meaning filth.

Heiji wonders who he is and Kogoro reveals that Ed McCay is famous in America. He is a reporter whose speciality is exposing famous athletes' scandals. He managed to prove that many famous athletes took illegal drugs, played fixed games, and had affairs in the past. Ed McCay leaves after a confrontation with Ray nearly turns into a brawl.

Later, the announcer asks the audience to ask any questions they want to the three athletes. Ran suddenly raises her hand to ask a question, but actually asks Ray Curtis to sign an autograph. The announcer is initially against it, but Ray says that it's okay and that he is more than happy to give an autograph and one of his number 8 uniforms to her. Ran thanks Ray for accepting her request. When Ray asks her name, she actually asks to write 'Shinichi'. Conan blushes because Ran remembered that he was a fan of Ray Curtis. Ray at same time discreetly asks Ran to help him with a secret project that he and his fellow athletes are working on.

Kazuha thinks it's weird that goalkeepers are supposed to be number 1 but Ray wears number 8. Conan says it's because Ray used to be a fielder, but during the World Cup, both the first string and back-up goalkeepers were injured, putting them in a pinch, as a result they decided to make Ray the goalkeeper. His super-saves led them to victory. After that, when he entered the Sevilla League in Spain, he came on as a goalkeeper with the number 8 on his soccer uniform. Of course, he wears it for his major league soccer team as well. Kazuha then asks what does number 99 mean on the uniform Mike wears. Heiji answers that it stands for 99 mph, which is 160 km in Japan. It's the speed of Mike's pitch, so he requested that number on his uniform. Lastly, Kazuha asks what does the number 4 mean on the boxing glove under Ricardo's signature. Kogoro answers that it's because Ricardo used to always win in "four" rounds, so he started putting it under his signature.

When Ran gets back with the autographed uniform for Shinichi, she also has the ticket to the exhibition match in Nagai that Ray will be playing in. She decides to give it to Conan much to his delight. Kazuha notices Ran holding a wireless transceiver and asks what that is for, Ran answers that it is for a secret surprise.

Outside, Ran uses the transceiver to communicate with the three athletes to go to the hotel rooms above the restaurant to form a giant letter "K" with the lights from the hotel’s rooms. When the k is finally finished, a gunshot goes off and one of the windows break. Conan and Heiji run back inside inside the hotel and then upstairs to where the gunshot was heard. They enter a room and after turning on the lights, they find the dead body of Ed McCay.

Murder

EP238-239 Case.jpg

Location: K3 Restaurant
Victim: Ed McCay
Age: 48 Years Old
Cause of death: Gunshot Wound to the Chest
Suspects: Ricardo Barreira, Mike Norwood, and Ray Curtis
After hearing a gunshot, Conan and Heiji run into the hotel and up the stairs to find Ed McCay dead in an empty room.

When Otaki and the police arrive, they identify the victim as Ed McCay, a 48-year old reporter from Chicago. The cause of death is a gunshot wound to the chest. The weapon is determined to be a Smith & Wesson revolver. Judging from the blood stains, death wasn't instant. Heiji states that the gunshot was heard at 8:05 pm. In the hotel while making the giant "K", Ray was responsible for the 1st and 2nd floors, Mike was responsible for the 3rd and 4th floors, and Ricardo was responsible for the 5th floor. That means any one of those three could have committed the crime. Judging from the past the three athletes had with Ed McCay, they all undoubtedly had motives to kill him.

When Conan checks the corpse, he notices the victim is gripping his belt with his left hand. While the fingers of his right hand are peculiar as well: The little finger and ring finger are curled in. Conan realizes that this is most likely a dying message that McCay left behind with the last of his strength. The fingers on his right hand and the white bando in his left hand, means "bando" refering to a leather belt in the west.

When the police check all the guests for traces of gunpowder, all the tests come back negative. They also give the three athletes a full body check but their managers resist stating they will not let the police treat them as suspects any longer. Of course, there were no traces of gunpowder on them either. Although is was true that those three weren't fond of the victim. He reported that Ricardo fought in fixed matches and was forced to retire. Next, he said that Ray got kicked out of the European soccer league for illegal drug abuse. Finally, he claimed Mike had an affair that lead to his divorce, but Mike's wife was Japanese and they're doing well. Conan is acting strangely as the three celebrities are suspects, but he isn’t sharp as he usually is. Heiji wonders if something is holding him back.

Part 2

Kogoro, Ran, and Kazuha are still at the party. Ran asks Kazuha where Conan and Heiji are and she tells Ran that they are still investigating the case. Meanwhile, Heiji is still on the stairs investigating, trying to figure out who murdered Ed McCay. He checks the rooms and keeps thinking of possible ways that the murder could have taken place.

Conan suddenly appears and talks to him about all three athletes a show they are all innocent. Heiji and Conan open a closet and find a mop inside, they both realize what the trick is. However, Conan who is in disbelief raises his voice at Heiji stating that he will prove that the murder was committed by someone else. Conan leaves and finds the three athletes leaving the restroom all together, he overhears them talking while one of them is supporting Ray Curtis who is limping. Conan goes into the restroom and finds a air pump needle from the trash. He hears Ran, Kazuha, and Kogoro walking over, Kogoro is talking to Ran and Kazuha about what he had overheard it in the restaurant. He heard one of the employees saying that they understand what "bandou" means. Kogoro also said that Ed McCay was fluent in Japanese and knew a lot about Japanese food. Hearing this, Conan puts two and two together realizing who the culprit is, much to his dismay.

    Trivia

    • Ray Curtis most likely got his name from the character Rey Curtis in the Law & Order series.
    • This is the only case where Conan gets emotionally involved, due to his soccer idol being one of three suspects. It nearly causes him to let Curtis get away with the murder.
