Background
Koji Sekine is a young man living in the Kyoto region. He works as a cameraman and is a professional karuta player. Formerly affiliated with the Nagoro-Kai (名頃会), an elite karuta club with only twenty members, he moved to the much larger Satsuki-Kai (皐月会) when his mentor Shikao Nagoro disappeared. He went on to reach the finals of the Satsuki Cup (皐月杯争奪戦), but lost each time to the current champion Toshiya Yajima. He is the organizer for the annual lottery of the Satsuki-Kai.
Personality
Koji is an intelligent and calculating man, as he is able to pull himself out of the dangerous position of being framed for Yajima's murder quickly and even thinks of providing himself with a fake alibi and not to say too many details. However, when he gets cocky, he can slip out easily and then feels cornered. When he feels stressed, he walks around in circles. He has a snarky personality, but likes to put an innocent face.
He speaks in the Kansai dialect.
Appearance
Koji is a tall slim man with a distinctive big pointy nose and short sassy blonde hair. He is seen wearing suits, the first being a relaxed-style grey jacket with a green shirt and blue pants without a necktie. On the second occasion, for the tournament, he wears a more formal tan suit with a grey shirt and a black necktie. His shoes are black.

Plot overview
During a TV program by Nichiuri TV featuring Kogoro Mouri and Kensuke Achiwa, Toshiya Yajima, the third guest star, fails to arrive, but because the people at the station are unaware that he was just killed, they call in Sekine to be his replacement, since he is also a big figure in the karuta world. In the meanwhile, Sekine who went to confront his rival finds his dead body and panicks, so he decides to hide his involvement in the discovery of murder and shuts his phone off. Later in the evening, he arrives again at Yajima's mansion in the same clothes he was wearing when he discovered the body, which is a blunder since the police could have investigated his clothing. There, he meets Fumimaro Ayanokoji, Conan, Heiji, Kogoro and Achiwa and asks them what happened and pretends that he was drunk and did not power on his phone, which was why he could not be reached. This first encounter raises Conan and Heiji's suspicions. Later, Conan and Heiji using sleeping Kogoro corner Yajima in a room in Hotel New Otani and confront him regarding his involvement with Yajima's murder. He does not have an alibi, has a rivalry with Yajima and most of all said by accident that Yajima was beat to death even though there would be no way for someone that just arrived to know that the sword could not be used. He manages to get away when a staff member asks him to finish some preparations. The next day, when the convoy consisting of Achiwa's, Momiji and Iori's and Sekine's cars move towards the site of the tournament, the culprit blows up the bomb he had placed under his car. Sekine miraculously survives the explosion, but is in a critical state. Furthermore, the culprit had sent an email to him prior to the crime, with one of Nagoro's favourite karuta cards attached to it. A few days later, Sekine wakes up and is tended to by a nurse.
Relationships analysis
Toshiya Yajima
Toshiya Yajima is Koji's main rival and both have been fighting for a while to win the title of karuta champion. However, he has always lost to and this has led to him having some resentment towards the former. The fact that Yajima was an avid critic of Nagoro also fuels this rivalry, but now that Yajima is dead, he might have a chance at winning the Cup.
Heiji Hattori and Conan Edogawa
From the moment they met, Heiji and Conan have had suspicions on him and tried to corner him about it. He tried to hide it even with all the evidence and this has led to a relation turned sour between both parties. It is unknown if they made up after the case.
Kensuke Achiwa
Kensuke Achiwa seems to have a friendly relationship at first glance with Sekine, calling Sekine-kun, inferring to a student-teacher type relationship, but in fact, Achiwa was using him, unbeknownst to the karuta player. He was targeted merely for his contrived plan even though Achiwa had no vendetta against Sekine. Him discovering Yajima's body probably prompted Achiwa even more to get rid of him.
Shikao Nagoro and the Nagoro-Kai
Shikao Nagoro was the teacher and mentor of Sekine. He has a big amount of respect for Nagoro, but eventually moved on to Satsuki-Kai five years ago. He and Momiji are the only students of Nagoro to switch clubs. Moreover, the snarky and snobbish personality of Sekine seems to have been on par with Momiji and Nagoro's personalities.
