Background
Kohji Haneda was a talented shogi player, deeply respected by his adopted younger brother, Shukichi Haneda. By the time of his death, he had won four shogi titles. Many had high hopes that he would win all seven of the major shogi titles.
Seventeen years ago, he went to the United States for a chess competition, a game he also enjoyed. The night before, Amanda Hughes, one of his big fans, visited and played chess with him at the hotel where he stayed. She introduced Rachel Asaka, her bodyguard, to him. He said she was his ideal girlfriend and also pointed out that her right eye's disease is Amaurosis Fugax.
Worrying something happened, Amanda lied to Asaka that she forgot a horse chess piece in his room and asked her to go there immediately as a favor. At the meantime, he realized what happened, asked Asaka to hide and acted like he didn't know anything when the organization visited his room to find "an Asian-looking woman". He persuaded Asaka to stay in his room for her safety, but she didn't want him to be killed for helping her. He knocked Asaka out with a stun gun and hid her in his bookshelf. Before getting unconscious, Asaka warned him that the bad guys would kill him, he handed her his good luck charm, a bishop shogi piece, and said: "With the watchtower bishop, you can be sure of making a good move. I must carry my initial dream through to the end." When the bad guys came, Rum noticed the books in bookshelf must have been touched so he wanted to check, Kohji told Rum he saw a piece of news including him gave a speech for Renya Karasuma thirty years ago to prevent him from checking the bookshelf, Rum let one of his man beat Kohji. Realizing Kohji would not reveal anything about Asaka, Rum decided to kill him. In his last breath, Kohji cut the mirror given to him by his mother to leave his dying message: CARASUMA.
Kuroda quickly ran into his room as Amanda had a meeting with Kohji that night and only found Kohji's dead body. The only thing he was able to do was take some pictures at the crime scenes. Asaka woke up and thought Kuroda was the one killed Kohji, she attacked him until she was knocked out. Rum then realized Kohji hid Asaka in the bookshelf and noticed the bathroom was messed up badly, he tried to clear up the evidence but the bad guys had to run because the police were on their way.
Personality
Kohji's motto was "I must carry my initial dream through to the end" (初志貫徹 shoshi kantetsu ).[2] The same motto was written on a fan that Shukichi now owns.

Relationship analysis
Shukichi Haneda
Shukichi is a non-blood brother of Kohji, either by adoption, marriage, or some other means. Shukichi deeply respected him and likely changed one of his name characters slightly to honor Kohji. However the story of their relation is unknown. It's possible it's related to Tsutomu's involvement in Kohji's death.
Tsutomu Akai
Tsutomu Akai is related to Kohji's death. He was a friend of Kohji's father, who asked him to investigate his son's death.[8]
Amanda Hughes
Amanda Hughes was a fan of Kohji and has been in contact with him. She was murdered the same day as Kohji, and evidences proves that she had been in his hotel room before the murder. Haibara suspects that it might have been their relationship that led to Kohji's death.
Rumi Wakasa
Rumi Wakasa/Rachel Asaka first met Kohji when she accompanied Amanda seventeen years ago. Kohji said she is his ideal girlfriend and it's implied that she also has feelings for him. She thought of him as a "foolish person" because he sacrificed himself to protect her from the Black Organization. She keeps Kohji's good luck charm, the shogi bishop, which was handed by him and has memories of Kohji hiding her in his bookshelf "Huh? Why did I help you? I decided to do so. Do something as I originally planned". She still seeks revenge for both Amanda and Kohji's murders.
Hyoue Kuroda
Kuroda involved in the death of Kohji seventeen years ago, as he was supposed to meet Amanda seventeen years ago, but he wasn't able to save both Amanda and Kohji's lives from the Black Organization. He took some pictures in the crime scenes and a car accident put him into a coma after trying to drive away from the Black Organization.
Name origin
Maybe the name Kohji Haneda (羽田 浩司 Haneda Kōji ) comes from Yoshiharu Habu (羽生 善治 Habu Yoshiharu ) and Kōji Tanigawa (谷川 浩司 Tanigawa Kōji ), real-life shogi players.[9]
Shukichi Haneda (羽田 秀𠮷 Haneda Shūkichi ) may have changed his name slightly to honor the late Kohji Haneda. Kohji's given name is 浩司, and the first character's radicals are (氵ノ土口). 土 is earth's do. Shukichi's given name is spelled 秀𠮷, with the final "kichi" kanji also including the radical for earth's do. This 𠮷 for kichi is a very rare variant; 99% of the time kichi is written as 吉 with 士 (man/samurai's shi) instead.
Trivia
- In episode 129, which was not relevant to the readers at the time, furigana (Japanese reading aid) of his surname is Hada (ハダ ).
- Gosho Aoyama mentioned there was "red herring" in volume 18[10], the same volume the list of APTX 4869 victims appeared in.
- A (so far unconfirmed) source gives the names of his father and mother as Yasuharu and Ichiyo, respectively.
- His character design is very similar Gohan's in the manga and anime franchise Dragon Ball.
- In file 1052 the bishop that Kohji always kept it as a good luck charm was the last piece he moved the first time when he won against his teacher. It has a cut on its lower left. He gave it to Rumi.
