Background

Hyouga Koumoto is a young rising star in the Japanese acting scene and a well-established singer as a member of Naniwa Kids, a boys band based in the Osaka region. Prior to the timeline, he is rumored to be going out with actress Usagi Mikage, which his agency denies. He later went into hiding following these news[1].

His acting career in theater and television likely sprung after he became well-known as a singer. His hobby is to collect shrine stamps[2].

Appearance

Hyouga Koumoto is a tall and young dark-skinned man with medium-length sparkly-black wavy hair in two bangs sent to the sides. He speaks in the Osakan dialect. He is later shown wearing a traditional suit while playing "Heiichi Hattori".

Plot overview

Shintoist Temple Case (Manga: 1067-1069, Anime: 1085-1086)

Heiji pretends to be Hyouga Koumoto.

After Kazuha and Ran go to Haido Shrine to get lucky charms, Heiji follows his love interest and decides to get lucky charms as well since his many attempts at confessing went awry. He disguises himself with a fox-mask so Kazuha does not recognize him[1]. However, Conan, who tagged along Ran and Kazuha, quickly recognizes him, and decides to give him his voice-changing bowtie to help him fake his voice. Kazuha and Ran notice Conan talking with Heiji and mistake the latter for Hyouga Koumoto, as Heiji imputed a random voice in the voice-changer, and Heiji decides to go along with pretending to be Koumoto, with the girls deciding to keep his identity secret from his fans[1]. After a murder occurs, seeing "Koumoto" notice clues from the crime scene and deduce the culprit's actions, Kazuha becomes wary of the fake "Koumoto"[5].

After the case is solved, the real Hyouga Koumoto is noticed by fans trying to buy lucky charms at the shrine, and Kazuha uses the opportunity to call Heiji out[2]. Koumoto tries to push back his fan's suspicions that he is buying charms for his relationship with Mikage by saying that he was simply there for his shrine stamp collection[2].

Detective Play Director Murder Case (Manga: 1088-1090, Anime: 1135-1136)

While meeting the director and his staff for the future writing of a play based on them, Kogoro and Heiji head over to that same director's house in Kyoto and discuss about it. The producer mentions about casting Koumoto as Heiji's character while casting Kenzaki as Kogoro's character[6].

Detective Play Murder Case (Manga: 1129-1133, Anime: TBA)

Hyouga Koumoto as Heiichi Hattori.

Along with famous actor Osamu Kenzaki, Koumoto plays Heiichi Hattori (based on Heiji), one of the two protagonists of a new play by Kyousuke Kabumoto and sponsored by Momiji Ooka, which adapts the real-life experience of Kogoro Mouri and Heiji as a love story[4]. At the end of the play's premiere, which the real-life detectives attended, Koumoto meets with them backstage[4]. While Kogoro enjoyed the play overall, Heiji seemed to be less pleased about it. Kogoro also praised Koumoto's performance, but did not understand that Koumoto was a co-star with Kenzaki and thought that the former was a supporting character[4]. After chatting a bit with Kogoro and Heiji's group, Koumoto and Kenzaki explain that they have very busy schedules and that the premiere was the only time they will appear together, and that they have stand-ins for when will not be on stage[4]. Later, a serial murder case occurs, and several members of the cast are killed. Kenzaki and Koumoto are removed from the suspect list since they were giving interviews when the first victim died. They later gave their testimonies at the police station and it is unknown whether the play continued to be shown afterwards[3].

Name origin

Like the other character that were introduced in the same case he first appeared in, his name comes from an animal, in this case, the leopard (ヒョウ hyō?). His name is also contrasted with that of Usagi Mikage, as his last name contains the kanji for light ( ?), whilst her last name contains the kanji for shadow ( kage?)[7].

He is also inspired from Taiga Kyoumoto (京本 大我), member of the idol group SixTONES and a fan of the Detective Conan series, and Koichi Domoto (堂本 光一), member of the duo KinKi Kids. Naniwa Kids (浪花キッズ) comes from the duo KinKi Kids (Kinki (近畿) is the region in which the Naniwa Ward of Osaka is situated) and the boys band Naniwa Danshi (なにわ男子)[8].
