Prologue - Roller Coaster Murder Case
Characters introduced
File 001 - The Heisei Holmes
At a party in a mansion, high school detective Shinichi Kudo solves the murder of the host's wife. He reveals to Inspector Megure that the wheelchair-bound host is the killer and that his broken leg healed weeks ago. The next day, on the way to school, the newspapers and TV reporters are all talking about Shinichi's latest case and his childhood friend Ran Mouri is upset at him for once again taking business away from her father, a private detective. The two later go on a date to Tropical Land, as Shinichi promised they would if Ran won her karate tournament. While there, Shinichi spends a lot of time talking about his idol, Sherlock Holmes, and even guesses that a woman in line is a gymnast (because he could see marks on her thighs when the wind blew up her skirt) as a demonstration of Holmes' deduction style. This upsets Ran a little, as she was looking forward to a day with just Shinichi. On the roller coaster, a man named Kishida is mysteriously beheaded in the tunnel. The suspects are the victim's girlfriend Aiko, their two friends Hitomi (the gymnast) and Reiko, and two mysterious men in black. After Inspector Megure and the police arrive, they discover a bloody knife in Aiko's bag and arrest her.
While consoling Ran, who was upset by the crime, Shinichi sees one of the men in black headed somewhere and decides to follow him. He tells Ran to go home without him and Ran has a strange feeling she will never see him again. Shinichi spies on the man in black making a blackmail transaction with a company president. Distracted by the scene, the other man in black hits Shinichi from behind, knocking him nearly unconscious. Before they leave, the men in black give Shinichi a "new poison" that leaves no trace behind in the body. As Shinichi's body burns he thinks of Ran before finally losing consciousness. When he awakens, he has been found by security guards who refer to him as a "boy". The last panel reveals that Shinichi now has the body of a 6 year old.
Company President's Daughter Case
File 002 - The Great Detective Turned Small
Unaware of his condition, Shinichi tries to explain to the security guards the events he just saw, but they dismiss it as an over-active imagination. Shinichi then sees himself in a mirror and realizes he his body has shrunk. He escapes from the security office and makes his way back home, where he runs into his neighbor and family friend Professor Agasa. Naturally, Agasa does not believe the child's claim that he is Shinichi Kudo shrunken down, but when the child is able to correctly deduce that he had just run home from a restaurant, Agasa realizes that he is indeed Shinichi. Inside his house's library, Shinichi puts on his old elementary school uniform and discusses the situation with Agasa. Shinichi asks him to make an antidote, but Agasa cannot without knowing the ingredients to the poison. As they decide it is best for Shinichi to lay low for fear of the men in black coming after him, Ran arrives looking for him. Agasa stalls her as Shinichi hides behind a desk and puts on his father's old glasses. Ran discovers the boy, finds him adorable, and asks him his name. Shinichi panics, looks at the nearby books, and answers Conan Edogawa, from Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo. Agasa tells Ran that Conan is a distant relative whose parents are in the hospital and have asked him to take care of him. But, he tells her, he is a single man and cannot properly take care of a child, so he asks Ran to take him in. When Conan protests, Agasa quietly explains to him that Ran's house is a detective agency, and if he lives there he will surely come across a case concerning the men in black eventually. Conan reluctantly agrees, but Ran must ask her father first. On the walk home, Ran asks Conan if he has a person he likes, explaining that she does. Intending to tease her, Conan asks if she is talking about Shinichi. She admits to it but asks Conan not to tell Shinichi. This causes Conan to almost admit his secret to her, but they then arrive at home and run into Ran's father Kogoro. He is has suddenly gotten a case and is rushing out the door calling for a cab. He hurridly tells ran that the case involves a rich child who was kidnapped by a man in black. After his cab is already on it's way, he notices that Conan and Ran are with him, Ran having followed Conan. As Kogoro and Ran argue, Conan is thinking only of the men in black...

File 003 - The Unwelcome Great Detective
Conan, Kogoro, and Ran go to the house of Kogoro's client. When they arrive, they find out that the butler saw the client's daughter, Akiko, kidnapped by a large man dressed in black. The butler's behavior is oddly suspicious - among other things, he claims that the demand for ransom money on top of temporarily closing the client's company must be some sort of mistake. After realizing that an outsider couldn't have gotten past the house's guard dogs unnoticed, Conan sets up a few hints leading Kogoro to finally deduce that the kidnapper was the butler. The butler confesses to hiding Akiko in a hotel, but before they can leave to collect her, a housemaid rushes out with a phone call. The caller reiterates his demand of 300 million yen for Akiko's ransom.
File 004 - The Sixth Smokestack
After initial skepticism from the adults, Akemi's plea for help over the phone proves that she has truly been kidnapped. The kidnapper threatens to kill her if his demands go unmet or the police become involved, but Akemi interjects a clue about her location: she is in a school warehouse, and can see a smokestack from the window. The kidnapper quickly ends the call, and the adults debate how to proceed while Conan worries that Akemi's gamble has placed her in imminent danger.
Taking Akemi's favorite dog as a mount for the sake of speed, Conan investigates the five nearby school sites matching her description but finds nothing. However, Conan then notices a tall building that looks like a smokestack when viewed from the side, and deduces which school in the area views it from that angle. At the school, the kidnapper closes the ransom deal with Akiko's father and prepares to kill her, but Conan arrives just in time to interfere. The dog attacks the kidnapper while Conan reassures Akiko, but using a school bat the kidnapper subdues the dog and then goes after Conan. Conan's new body is too weak to do fight back, even with his prized soccer kick. All he can do is dodge for as long as possible, and when one too many hits lands, the kidnapper prepares for the finishing blow...
File 005 - The Other Perpetrator
As Conan takes a beating, Akiko realizes that her dog has not helped because he has disappeared. Immobile, bruised, and bleeding, Conan mentally acknowledges that his tiny body seems incapable of subduing a caught criminal and he braces himself for the kidnapper's killing blow. However, suddenly Ran darts in front of Conan, catching the baseball bat's downward swing with an arm block. She then knocking the kidnapper out with a series of powerful karate moves. Kogoro and the dog arrive as Ran unties Akiko, and she explains to Conan that the dog returned home with one of Akiko's shoes in order to lead them to Akiko's location. Client and daughter are reunited, and Akiko defends the butler's actions by explaining that she came up with the kidnapping scheme herself in order to spend time with her workaholic father. The client praises Kogoro's method of finding Akiko, though Shinichi privately grumbles that the credit really belongs to him - a fact Akiko acknowledges as she thanks Conan for saving her.
On the taxi ride home Kogoro gloats over the success of the day and the client's promised reward. Ran broaches the idea of Conan staying with them for a while, which Kogoro enthusiastically approves, treating Conan like a good luck charm. As Kogoro laughs, Conan broods over his new apparent helplessness, and how to change that by the time he tracks down the men in black.

Seeing the dead body, Kogoro Mouri immediately called Ran to inform the Police. Inspector Juzo Megure turns up at the crime scene with his police officers. He was disappointed to see Kogoro, the ex-cop who have always been a nightmare to the inspector, turning up at the crime scene as a Private Eye.The Inspector than complained about the heat in the room and asks Yoko Okinowhether it is usually that warm and she answered that it usually isn't. The inspector then asked her whether she recognized who the victim is. The manager then asked the inspector for permission to take a closer look at the victim. As he was moving towards the victim, he intentionally tripped on the blood to make himself fall. As he was getting up, Conan noticed that he was picking something up but kept quiet. The manager then told the inspector that they had no idea who the victim is. Their conversation was then interrupted by Conan who was pointing out the weird things in the room, which made Kogoro smack him hard on his head. Conan still continued to investigate the Crime Scene and at the midst of it, he noticed an earing on the floor. He uses the Voice-Changing Bowtie to tell the inspector about it. The earing happened to belong to Ikezawa yuuko, a celebrity who has a grudge on Yoko Okino. The inspector then ordered a few of his men to bring her up to the Crime scene as she might've been the killer.
File 008 - Resemblance
Ikezawa Yuuko wan furious at the police for making her come all the way to the crime scene. She said that although she had a grudge on Yoko Okino for taking her lead role away, they should be more wary of the owner of the apartment first. Kogoro then held the earring up and asked her whether or not it belongs to her. She said yes and went to the bathroom claiming that the hypothesis the police drew was ridiculous. As she was heading to the bathroom, Conan notices that they look identical from the back. And after she finished using the toilet, she went into the living room again and took a statue which was actuially a lighter to light her cigarette. Conan then shouted that she was smart as she knew that that is a lighter, not a normal statue, despite her comment that she've never been to the house. As the inspector and Kogoro was starting to suspect her, Conan then asked Yoko where the bathroom is which made the inspector remember that Yuuko have already known where the bathroom is without asking anyone. Kogoro then started accusing her which made her own up that she have actually been into the apartment of Yoko Okino. She said that since she hated Yoko, she started harrasing her by sending her pictures of her that she took secretly but then, that still didn't influence her job. So, she decided to steal her key and break into Yoko's house. As she was entering earlier that afternoon, A man grabbed her from behind and she tried to fight him off. After managing to fight him off, she ran away. Then, a forensic came into the room, saying that the victim graduated from the same high school as Yoko which made Yoko tell the truth that she was his boy friend then but he dumped her. But as soon as she became famous, he started coming to her house again and ask her whether they can be together again. She said that she actually recognised the victim at her first sight but the manager told her not to tell the police about their her relationship with the victim. Conan then started to search for clues again and noticed a mark on the floor. As he was driving his conclusion in his head, Kogoro jumps up and shouted that he have figured out who the murderer is.
