The Black Organization, the symbol of crime in Detective Conan.

Crime is one of the central elements in the manga and anime franchise Detective Conan by Gosho Aoyama. Crime appears in many forms throughout the whole series, with the most common one being the act of Murder. Almost every case in Detective Conan involves one or multiple kinds of crimes, however, the extent and dangerous degree of which vary from case to case. The protagonists, along with the Law Enforcement and many other detectives, are responsible for preventing and fighting against these crimes.

A person who commits crime is usually called a "Criminal" (犯人 han'nin?).

Crimes

Murder

General

Murder, and generally referred to (although not entirely correctly) as Killing, is one of the many forms of Homicide, where a person ends the living life of another person on purpose, for some certain reasons. The criminal in this case is usually called a "The murderer", "The killer" or more generally, "The culprit". This is the most common crime in Detective Conan.

There are many ways to commit a murder, but the most common methods that have been used throughout the whole series are: Use sharp objects (such as knife) to cut or stab the victim's body; physically attack the victim with heavy objects (usually on the head); shoot the victim using firearms; strangle or poison the victim to death...

The murders in Detective Conan are prompted by various motives, such as to revenge, or because of jealousy or hatred... The relationship between the culprit and the victim each time also ranges from enemies to close friends[1] and even siblings[2]. In most of the cases, the murderers usually come up with brilliant tricks and strategies that would help them creating a solid alibi, or making the crime scene looks like an accident or a suicide; in order to prevent the truth from being revealed to other people.

Most murder cases are assigned to the Homicide sections (殺人犯捜査第1~第12係) from Division 1 (捜査第一課) of the Criminal Investigation Department (刑事部)[3].

Attempted murder

There have been many situations, in which a killer was having intention in finishing the life of a certain target, but didn't succeed in doing so, due to the survival of the victim afterwards. This kind of situation happens when the victim is rescued on time by a third person before the culprit can do any harm, or that the victim is able to defend or dodge him/herself from the most lethal attacks.

Sometimes, even though the murders have successfully wounded their targets to the point of being unconscious, however, these victims are fortunately aided on time, thus end up alive.

Serial murder

A Serial murder is a series of Murders that occurred in a period of time and are all carried out by the same murderer(s). The criminal who commit this crime can be called a "Serial killer" or "Serial murderer". This kind of crime happens occasionally in Detective Conan.

Cases with serial murder:

Assassination

Assassination is a special form of Murder. In the case of assassinations, the targets are usually prominent figures, mainly politicians (rather than normal civilians), who are supposed to be murdered in a surprise attack[4]. A person who commits an assassination is usually called an "Assassin".

Assassinations and assassination attempts rarely occur in Detective Conan, and most of the times are carried out by the Black Organization. Cases with assassination or assassination attempt:

Kidnapping

Kidnapping, and sometimes referred to as Abduction, is the taking away or transportation of a person against that person's will, usually to hold the person in false imprisonment, a confinement without legal authority. The criminal is usually called "The kidnapper" or "The abductor". This kind of crime is common in Detective Conan.

The act of kidnapping is usually committed for ransom; other common purposes include to blackmail the hostage or other people into following the kidnapper's command (such as helping him/her doing some tasks), or to acquire certain information by intimidating the hostage or the hostage's acquaintances... In general situations, kidnappers often forbid the blackmailed targets (usually the hostage's acquaintances) to seek help from outsiders or the authorities, unless the intimidated ones are the authorities themselves[5]. If these people failed to obey those demands and let the kidnapper finds out, the life of the hostage would be in danger. Most of the times, once the kidnapper is surrounded by the Police or other rescuers, he/she will use the hostage as a shield to threaten and overwhelm them, in order to easily escape from the scene. It takes cautiousness and brilliant strategies to defeat such criminal and save the victim alive at the same time.

Just like with murder, the targets for the kidnappings also vary from time to time. While many cases feature young children as hostages, there have been times when adults[6] or young adults[7] were illegally abducted as well, it depends on the kidnappers' motives and intentions. The status and role of the victims also range dramatically from the most ordinary civilian to a Police officer[5], from the most minor case character to the lead protagonist[8].

General kidnapping cases are most likely assigned to Division 1 (捜査第一課) of the Criminal Investigation Department (刑事部)[9].

Theft

General

Theft, and generally referred to as Stealing or Thieving, is the taking of another person's property without that person's permission or consent with the intent to deprive the rightful owner of it. A person who commits this crime is usually called a "Thief". This is a common crime in Detective Conan.

General theft cases are assigned to Division 3 (捜査第三課) of the Criminal Investigation Department (刑事部); however all of the heists or heist attempts that involve Kaitou Kid are handled by Division 2 (捜査第二課)[10][3].

Arson

General

Arson, and sometimes referred to (although not entirely correctly) as Burning, is the crime of intentionally or maliciously lighting structures, wildland areas, cars or other properties on fire. It may be distinguished from other causes such as spontaneous combustion and natural wildfires. A criminal who commits arson is called an "Arsonist". This kind of crime occurs occasionally in Detective Conan.

Even though most of the arson cases in Detective Conan are committed with the object of murdering or injuring somebody, there are other common motives that can lead the criminal into committing an arson, such as to erase certain clues.

General arson cases are assigned to the Arson sections (火災犯捜査第1、第2係) from Division 1 (捜査第一課) of the Criminal Investigation Department (刑事部)[11][3].

Hijacking

Hijacking is a crime of stealing a specific vehicle when that vehicle is being driven by another person, usually with the use of force or threat. Most of the times, the criminals carry weapons, such as firearms, to prepare and use while committing the hijacking. This kind of crime rarely occurs in Detective Conan; and the object of the criminals is usually not to take over the vehicle itself for good; but to either overwhelm the driver, the passengers or other people and demands them to act as their command, or use the stolen vehicle to conveniently escape from someone's pursuit. The criminal in this case can be called a "Hijacker".

Motives

Crimes are prompted by many motives. Different kinds of crime may have different motives. Even with the same kind of crime (such as murder), the reasons why the criminals choose to break the law are not the same for each person.

In Detective Conan, motives can be divided into two main groups. While these two groups are separate from each others, one certain act of crime can be prompted by motives from both groups at the same time.

Psychological factors

In the series, the criminals' illegal actions often get influenced by their mind and negative emotions. Criminals when prompted by motives from this group may or may not get any benefit after committing the crime, and it usually doesn't require them to have any specific intention or a logical reason for doing so. Despite this, while some crimes occur because of a person's momentary loss in control of his/her temper or brutal behaviors, most of the criminals throughout the whole series are often negatively affected by these mental factors for a period of time, which provokes them to come up with brilliant and cautious strategies for executing their illegal plans.

Vindictiveness

To revenge is arguably the most common reason for committing a crime in Detective Conan, and also the most common reason for murdering someone. In this case, the victims are usually people who might have done something that, according to the culprits, was unforgivable to their family, friends, acquaintances and sometimes to the culprits themselves, and therefore, vengeance is required.

Because of this, even when the criminals' actions are obviously wrong and they should be punished by the authorities, it's also important to note that most of the culprits in the series are not truly cold-blooded and ruthless people, but ones that were blinded by vindictiveness. Meanwhile, the victims themselves are the ones who're usually portrayed as having bad personality, at least on moral level, which leads to their own demise. However, this is not a pattern as there have been exceptions. Furthermore, the crimes sometimes also occur due to unfortunate misunderstandings.

Desire

For money and properties

Money or properties in general can lead characters into committing terrifying, and perhaps immoral crime. This is also one of the most common motives in the series. The victims are usually wealthy people, from whom the criminals can acquire a large amount of properties.

This kind of motive may also relate to the compete in business or inheritance.

For immortality

The main target of the criminal syndicate in Magic Kaito is the Pandora Gem, which is said to grant its possessor immortality. Although unconfirmed, the main goal of the Black Organization may also be immortality.

Romantic jealousy

This kind of motive is usually featured in cases that revolve around family relationship.

Envy

The criminals commit crime because they are envious of the victims.

Antipathy

The criminals commit crime because they very hate the victims because of some certain reasons.

Rage

The criminals commit crime because they're very angry and frustrated at someone[14].

Desperation

The criminals commit crime because they're very desperate because of some certain reasons.

Fear

The criminals commit crime because they are afraid of someone or something.

Specific intentions

Unlike the other group, criminals prompted by motives in this one usually aren't much influenced by their mental state or emotions. Instead, the need of crime is their main concern. They always have an explainable reason for their behaviors, and their intentions at the same time are very clear. Another difference from psychological motives is that the criminals usually expect that, by executing a certain illegal action, they can achieve some benefits or advantages from it.

Information/witness suppression

To silence every witness and erase every possible clue is a very common motive in Detective Conan. The culprit and the victim do not necessarily have to know each others.

Intimidation

This is the most common motive for kidnapping and blackmailing. By the act of threatening, the criminals can easily get what they want or are able to force the victims into following their command. Therefore, this is never the final intention of the criminals, but a method to achieve their true goal.

Threat elimination

The criminals murder a target who they think are dangerous to their safety.

Enemy/rival elimination

The criminals murder their enemy or rival to get more advantages.

Punishment for betraying

Criminal syndicate or criminal group members hunting a partner who has betrayed them as a punishment. This can also be an act of silencing.

Punishment for failing

Criminal syndicate or criminal group members hunting a partner who has failed a certain mission as a punishment. This can also be an act of silencing if the victim's failure is a threat to the others' safety.

Reconnaissance

In order the acquire some certain information, the criminals have to execute illegal methods.

Object-hunting

In order the acquire some certain object, the criminals have to execute illegal methods.
