Masaaki Sakurai (桜井 正明 Sakurai Masa'aki ), born in 1948, was a Japanese screenplay writer from Tokyo, Japan. He was formerly affiliated with Waseda University Film Study Group.
Sakurai went to Waseda University (早稲田大学) after he had just graduated from Waseda University Junior and Senior High School (早稲田大学高等学院・中学部). When he was learning at the Film Study Group, he made friends who also had the will to become screenwriters like him, for example, Yutaka Kaneko and Toshimichi Saeki. Moreover, he was graciously being called as "Keroyon-chan". Sakurai became an anime screenwriter after he had worked at an animation production company, named Mushi Production (虫プロダクション). Supposedly, a screenwriter he really admired, Hiroyuki Hoshiyama, was also from a literature club of that company. He passed away on February 20, 2010 due to lung cancer developed from alcohol abuse.[1]
Like other early Detective Conan anime screenwriters, his cases focus on the trick of killing. Incidentally, Officer Sakurai from episode 296 is named after him.
