Plot
At the Mouri Detective Agency, Conan, Ran and Kogoro are watching the news on TV. There is a report about the dead foreigners and the fire on Sea Monkey Island. According to the reporter, there is an unverified source claiming that the dead were FBI agents, which the FBI has officially denied as baseless rumors. Kogoro and Ran don't believe it either. Conan thinks back to the fact that he had removed the FBI ID from Jim Mason's body and given it to James Black, which meant that there was still no evidence of the dead aliens' identities. Nevertheless, a large number of agents were withdrawn from Japan because of the great losses during the showdown against the Black Organization.
Two things bother Conan about that night: firstly, his father mentioned a tea party to Akai at which something had come up that they hadn't gotten an answer to yet. Conan, however, knows nothing about said tea party and the thing that came up. Secondly, Conan is concerned with the information about Rum that Camel has passed on regarding his new identity, about using a "silly name". The FBI is at a loss for answers regarding that, and Amuro would probably refuse to give any clues, Conan thinks. But there is another person with whom he could consult about these matters. Just at that moment, Ran and Kogoro mention that a visitor is coming from Osaka today. A moment later, there is a knock at the door. Perfect timing, Conan thinks to himself, but only Kazuha is at the door, without Heiji, who Conan actually wanted to talk to.
Ran and Kazuha want to visit Haido Shrine, which is close to the agency, for a girls' only outing, and invite Conan to come with them, which Conan thinks is better than eating lunch with the old man. When they arrive at the shrine, a long queue is already lined up, as that day is the 15th, and lucky charms and stamps are on sale for that day only. All sorts of people queue up for it, high school students, female office workers, and a man who catches Kazuha's attention. The man in question is looking intently at a stack of flashcards, so he's probably a student, even if he looks a bit old.
Kazuha is also surprised that Ran knew nothing about the shrine, even though she lives in Tokyo; Kazuha herself had heard about the shrine from Heiji. A few days ago, Heiji had been staring very seriously at his cell phone; when Kazuha spoke to him about it, Heiji had been very frightened and dropped his cell phone. Kazuha picked it up and saw an article about the shrine on the screen. Kazuha suspects that Heiji was actually looking for something else. Conan, on the other hand, thinks that Heiji has done a lot of research on this shrine, as he desperately needs a lucky charm for his love life. As the lucky charm is only on sale today, Conan looks around the long queue again - and actually discovers Heiji, whose disguise with a kitsune mask is immediately seen through by Conan. Conan sets his voice changer to Kazuha's voice and teases Heiji a little before the two start talking. Conan can hardly believe that Heiji is now looking to the gods for help, but Heiji replies that he has little choice after his numerous recent failures. Heiji quickly bought the mask at the shrine when he saw Kazuha, Ran and Conan there.
Conan helps Heiji by sticking the voice changer into Heiji's mask and setting a different voice so that Heiji remains unrecognized. Not a second too soon, because Ran and Kazuha promptly arrive and ask who Conan is actually talking to. Heiji is just stammering out an excuse when Kazuha happily says that she can tell by the voice that the person under the mask must be Hyoga Komoto from the idol group Naniwa Kids[1] from Osaka, of whom she is a big fan. Coincidentally, Conan has set a voice on the voice changer that sounds like Komoto's voice. Komoto is currently embroiled in a scandal in which he is allegedly having a relationship with Usagi Mikage, another celebrity. Kazuha therefore suspects that he is also here for the lucky charm and promises to keep his secret until he has been able to buy the lucky charm.
While buying their lucky charms, the girls also saw the conspicuous man again, who seemed to be running after someone, muttering something about three particular people having appeared at the shrine. At that moment, a shout is heard from the direction of the stairs behind the shrine. Heiji and Conan immediately run off; while Kazuha rants about why boys always have to be like Heiji, Ran notices that "Komoto" is acting pretty much exactly like Heiji.
They find the body of the conspicuous man on the stairs behind the shrine. Kazuha speculates that he slipped, but Heiji can deduce that the man was knocked unconscious beforehand and then pushed down the stairs, meaning this was a murder. Meanwhile, Conan examines the victim's index cards, which have photos on them. According to Conan, the man is probably a police officer who walks the streets of the city looking for criminals. So the man spoke of "three criminals" as he walked past Ran and Kazuha.
The group calls Takagi, who arrives with Sato and has the shrine grounds surrounded as the culprit is probably still on the premises. Some time later, the police have completely searched the premises and actually found three people whose photos were among the victim's cards. One of them is therefore the perpetrator.
