Behind the Scenes: Detective Conan - Gosho Aoyama, Manga Artist[N 1] is a documentary produced by NHK and was released onto the NHK World-Japan website on December 27, 2024 as part of NHK World-Japan's The Professionals series. The documentary was originally part of NHK's Professional Work Style (プロフェッショナル 仕事の流儀 Purofesshonaru Shigoto no Ryūgi ) series and was broadcasted in Japan on April 28, 2024 under the name When You Look at the World Through the Eyes of a Child ~Manga Artist Gosho Aoyama~ (世界を、子どもの目で見てみたら 〜漫画家 青山剛昌〜 Sekai o, Kodomo no Me de Mite Mitara ~Mangakka Aoyama Gosho~ ). The Japanese version was also available on-demand on the NHK Plus streaming website, but as of January 2025, that documentary has been removed.

[hide]Background
Filming for the documentary began on May 29, 2023 and ended in January 2024. It is the first ever documentary to film the manga production process up close. Being the first-of-its-kind, there were initially some issues in negotiating filming for the production of the Flaming Skull Case, but after unmanned cameras were introduced, the documentary was able to include segments featuring Gosho brainstorming and drawing rough drafts for the manga. Besides the production of the manga, the documentary also includes short interviews with fellow renowned manga artist Mitsuru Adachi and Gosho's parents, Hiromichi and Michiko.
At the time this was broadcasted in Japan, Volume 105 of the Detective Conan Manga and the 27th Detective Conan movie had been released.

Quotes
Gosho Aoyama
I realized I shouldn't forget how being a kid feels.
Kids are smart, so if you simplify too much, they know you're trying to fool them. I don't treat them like kids...Even if it's hard to understand, if I do a good job presenting it, kids will enjoy it more. I believe in kids.
—Explaining why difficult tricks are used in a manga supposedly targeting kids
If I washed it, I feel like I'd lose something. Like eel shops that keep the same sauce simmering.
—Referring to the color palette that Gosho uses for coloring
I felt nothing. I really felt nothing in my heart. I didn't even feel worried about dying. I was numb...I wanted people to see what Shinichi and Ran were like as kids. I needed to tell that story. I felt I couldn't die until then.
—How Gosho felt during his hospitalization in 2015
Some spots look bad up close. People say no one would notice if I didn't fix them. But I can tell, so I don't like it.
—Gosho's attention to detail when drawing manga
Other
It's hard to say if he grew up into a proper adult and member of society...He draws manga like a genius middle schooler.
—Mitsuru Adachi, describing Gosho Aoyama
He always seemed to be thinking about ways he could make people happy.
—Hiromichi (Gosho's father), describing Gosho when he was a child
Trivia
- Gosho originally did not allow filming, but as he describes it, the production staff were so enthusiastic that they won him over.
- He spent six hours building a submarine in the game Animal Crossing: New Horizons, featuring the faces of (from left-to-right) Amuro, Vodka, Kir, and Vermouth in the windows of the submarine
- In this segment, it is also shown that Gosho's Nintendo Switch:
- Has gray Joy-Con controllers
- Uses the Light theme
- Has four user accounts
- Has two other games besides Animal Crossing: New Horizons, one of them being Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban!
- In this segment, it is also shown that Gosho's Nintendo Switch:
- This is the last Detective Conan-related production of any kind to include the voices of Atsuko Tanaka and Tohru Furuya, who voiced Chihaya Hagiwara and Rei Furuya, respectively.
- In the NHK World-Japan version, there is no animated segment that includes Rei Furuya, and thus, Tohru Furuya's voice is not included in NHK World-Japan's version.
