Hachizo Onizuka (鬼塚 八蔵 Onidzuka Hachizō?) is a character in Wild Police Story, later introduced in Detective Conan. He is a police instructor at the Metropolitan Police Academy and was the instructor of the Police Academy Five, consisting of Jinpei Matsuda, Wataru Date, Rei Furuya, Kenji Hagiwara and Hiromitsu Morofushi.

Background

Hachizo Onizuka himself passed the training at the Metropolitan Police Academy in Fuchū City and was became a drill instructor for the academy, becoming a non-commissioned police officer. More than eighteen years ago, before his death, police superintendent Masayoshi Sato left his white Mazda RX-7 in Onizuka's care, so he could keep it until his daughter Miwako finished her studies[2]. Seven years ago, while he was already a seasoned instructor, he was assigned a new class, which included Jinpei Matsuda, Wataru Date, Rei Furuya, Kenji Hagiwara and Hiromitsu Morofushi.

A few months after the Police Academy Five graduated, Masayoshi's daughter Miwako entered the police academy herself and graduated a few years prior to the timeline, after which Onizuka handed her the RX-7. His current whereabouts are unknown. His rank was assistant inspector[3].

Appearance

Onizuka is a tall and bulky man. He has a prominent nose and a constant stern complexion on his face. He has thick bushy eyebrows and sideburns and his hair is black. In the anime, he is dark-skinned. He is mostly seen wearing a police officer uniform, but at the graduating ceremony, he wears the dark blue uniform with golden epaulettes.

Personality

Onizuka is a serious and strict instructor, known for speaking loudly and shouting to his students. His strict teaching is however mostly done to forge his students into strong policemen. He is however kind-hearted and quick to act, jumping towards a falling working at the risk of his own safety, and also for taking care of Masayoshi's car. He is also strong despite his age, being able to keep a rope from strangling him for minutes. He is more lenient than one thinks, and knows the true potential of the Police Academy Five, as he covers for them when they break the law in enforcing it.

Plot overview

At the beginning of Wild Police Story, Onizuka is assigned a new group of students, which include Jinpei Matsuda, Wataru Date, Rei Furuya, Kenji Hagiwara and Hiromitsu Morofushi. He already knows that they are difficult students, from seeing their student files, but sees their potential and skills. During a shooting training session, Onizuka leads a group of workers to the rooftop of the gymnasium, but one of the workers falls from a hole that formed in the roof. Onizuka uses his quick thinking and jumps to grab the worker, but his neck gets entangled in the worker's safety line, strangling him in the process. Before he passes out however, the Police Academy Five manage to grab a gun and shoot the rope to cut it, saving him. He later covered for them since they used the gun without permission.

Some time later, Onizuka arrived at the academy in a white Mazda RX-7, which caught the eye of Hagiwara. Onizuka explained that it belonged to a friend and that he was keeping it. He however allowed Hagiwara to drive it in the garage. He then asked Matsuda to take a look at the engine. After he left, the Police Academy Five ended up using the car to save an unconscious truck driver and the car became scratched in the process. After Onizuka arrived to fetch his car, he was impressed that it was cleaned, not seeing that only one side was washed. He later scolded the five. He assigned them to toilet cleaning duty, threatening to fire them if they did not squeak it clean for a whole week. However, in the middle of the week, the five encountered the real killer of Hiromitsu's parents and had to disarm the killer, who tried to bomb a coin laundry shop. When Onizuka returned to see how they were doing the cleaning, he was stopped by Rei, who asked him not to come inside, but afte fighting with Rei for a bit, he managed to get in the bathroom and saw that it was clean, Rei having bought the other four enough time to finish their task. Satisfied, he asked them to keep at it for another week.

Sometime during their training, the Police Academy Five were playing in the ballpark when they met young Shinichi and Ran and decided to help the kids solve a case. They were later scolded by Onizuka for again using his RX-7 without permission, and endangering civilians.

At the end of their training, Onizuka was at their graduating ceremony and awarded the five their diplomas, and was visibly moved by their graduating.

Name origin

Hachizo Onizuka's name comes from Inspector Hachirō Onitsura (鬼貫 八郎 Onitsura Hachirō?), the main character of police drama series Keiji: Onitsura Hachirō (刑事・鬼貫八郎), inspired from Inspector Onitsura (鬼貫警部), a character created by Tetsuya Ayukawa[8]. Inspector Onitsura was featured as the 74th recommendation in the Detective Picture Book.

Trivia

  • His name contains the kanji for demon (鬼, "oni"), which may be a reference to his strict character, like a devil.
  • He appears on the cover of the 2024-53 issue of Shonen Sunday.
  • He has never appeared in the current timeline. All his appearances are from the past.
