In Detective Conan, he is the voice of Ryusuke Higo.

Biography

Sakurai is the oldest of three siblings in a family that ran a rice shop. His interest in voice acting began as a child after seeing a TV interview with a voice actor. He graduated from Okazaki Johsei High School and later studied at Yoyogi Animation Academy in Nagoya and 81 Acting Institute. He officially started his voice acting career in 1996 with the anime adaptation of Bakusō Kyōdai Let's & Go!!. Sakurai once mentioned that he would have taken over the family rice shop if he hadn’t become a voice actor.

Sakurai has been married to a former voice actress for nearly 20 years, though this was only revealed to the public in September 2022, following a report by Shukan Bunshun. On October 26, 2022, the same outlet reported that Sakurai had been in a 10-year relationship with a writer from his radio show P.S. Genki Desu: Takahiro. The affair allegedly started in October 2013 and ended suddenly on October 24, 2022, with no explanation. The writer reportedly did not know Sakurai was married until September 2022, even though they had plans to marry.

On November 3, 2022, the head of Second Shot, the company producing Sakurai's radio show, apologized to listeners upset by the situation. The company also canceled preorders for a product originally set for release in November 2022.
