Case

Situation

Kogoro, Ran, and Conan are invited to attend the opening ceremony of a ropeway which is built through a giant Goddess' statue on the Fuji mountains, Shizuoka Prefecture, by a certain Eizo Domoto's company. On the way there, they learn from Shizuka Kamiyama, a nun in a local temple and a very vocal opponent to the ropeway project, that everyone angering or disrespecting the goddess through the centuries has paid an enormous price, and that Eizo's company will not be an exception. Her words are not taken with complete seriousness, but during the ride through the ropeway right after the opening ceremony, Domoto disappears from the ropeway cart, and is later found dead on the goddess' hand.

By the time that the cart is out of the tunnel, Eizo has disappeared from the tunnel, and is seen on the goddess's hand, apparently dead. Is the the punishment from the goddess herself like what Shizuka Kamiyama said?

Conan realizes the trick for this seemingly impossible crime after being inspired by the words of various people during the investigation of the case and by checking the incinerator of the hut, which provided a resting place to the workers during the construction of the ropeway, near the statue. There, he finds a fake hand, which allows him to confirm his suspicions and deduce that Ayaka Yoshino was the murderer. It turns out that what the people in the cart saw in the goddess' hands after leaving the tunnel is just Domoto's doll with a fake knife and stab wound on it. This will trick the reporters from Tokainippo newspaper, who have been harsh critics of the ropeway project, to think that Eizo is dead. Since this is breaking news, they will immediately have this published on the newspaper, making a retraction impossible. In reality, however, Eizo is still inside the cart. It is just that he has gotten into the space below the passenger seats, with the help of his son Yasunori. He stays there until the cart passes the tunnel again as it goes downhill; he jumps out of the cart from there, and uses the passage between the tunnel and the viewing platform right beside the goddess' hand to reach the goddess. He then throws away the doll, climbs onto her hand, and plans to greatly surprise everyone else on board when they rush to the platform to check on him. Eizo believes that this will serve two purposes: one, to prove that the rumour about the goddess' curse is pure fiction and two, to humiliate and make the public distrust the Tokainippo newspaper for having made a blunder in their reporting. Ayaka, as the secretary of Yasunori, was easily able to learn about the plan, and she decides uses the plan against Eizo. Namely, as the cart reaches the apex of the mount and everyone rushes downhill to check on Eizo, she will wait for them to be gone and slip into the next cart going downhill to kill Eizo and burn the doll in the incinerator of the hut. This plan goes forward quite successfully, but the incinerator fails to burn the whole doll, and, in addition to that, a bead on her brooch drops onto the unburnt palm of the unburnt hand and is preserved.

Knowing that Conan possesses definitive evidence, Ayaka admits to murdering Eizo. She then reveals that her motive is to avenge her mother and older brother. A year ago, her older brother Takahata, who was a construction worker hired by Eizo's company, died in an accident. Although Eizo was not directly involved or responsible, he did order the workers to complete the ropeway in an unreasonably short amount of time, and tried to cover up the accident by using money to make their mother stay silent. Takahata's death took an enormous toll on the old woman, and she soon passed away. While in her deathbed, she summoned Ayaka to tell her about the truth about Takahata's death and her hatred for Eizo's company, and right at this moment, Ayaka's fate of revenge is sealed.
