Plot
Professor Agasa and Haibara watch the news in their house, where it is reported that the hunting rifle stolen from a gun store a few days ago has been found in a side alley near the store, but without ammunition. Police have no leads on the perpetrator yet, and there are no eyewitness accounts either so far because of the rainy weather that day. Haibara follows the news closely and wordlessly; Agasa is glad that the gun has been found, even if the perpetrator has not yet been caught. Now Haibara looks at her cell phone and asks the professor if he is free next Wednesday; Agasa explains that he will be with an acquaintance that day to show them how videoconference works, so he will be busy all afternoon. He asks Haibara why she wants him to come that day, but Haibara says that it is not that important. As she does so, she reads the announcement on her cell phone that there will be a parents' visit day at Teitan Elementary School from 1:50 to 2:50 PM that Wednesday.
On said Wednesday, the Detective Boys go to school as usual. Mitsuhiko and Ayumi are very much looking forward to the parents' day, but Genta is not, as he gets in trouble with his mother when he falls asleep in class again. Ayumi asks Haibara if she is looking forward to visiting day, to which Haibara reminds her that her parents died shortly after she was born, which is why no one will attend class for her. Embarrassed, Ayumi apologizes for the question, but Haibara does not take offense and instead asks why Ayumi is so excited. Ayumi explains that according to the last height measurement, she has grown a bit, so she hopes to be praised by her father for how tall she already is. Genta and Mitsuhiko assume that Conan's parents will not be coming either since they're both working overseas, but Conan reveals to them that his mother happens to be in the country right now, so she will be coming to school. In private, Haibara asks Conan if Yukiko will really be coming to school, which Conan confirms; Haibara sees his identity in jeopardy as a result, but Conan says that Yukiko did not want to miss the meeting after getting word of it. He tells Haibara not to worry, as Yukiko will again don the disguise of Fumiyo Edogawa, Conan's supposed mother. Continuing in private, Conan brings up Ayumi's mention of the body measurements, saying that he has not grown a millimeter since his rejuvenation, and asks Haibara if that could have something to do with APTX 4869, which Haibara denies. Then it must be a coincidence, Conan says, while Haibara gives him a serious look without a word.
The children pass a convenience store and spontaneously go in because Haibara needs new refills for her mechanical pencil. At the store, they meet their classmate Maria Higashio, who is buying tape because a corner of the class schedule poster is torn. Ayumi suggests asking a teacher to patch up the lesson plan, but Maria says that no one seems to mind but her. Haibara thinks that it is good that Maria does something about it when it bothers her. They go to the checkout; Haibara's pencil leads cost 258 yen, but she does not have any change and pays with a 1000 yen bill. Maria's tape costs 302 yen, which she pays with a 500-yen coin. Meanwhile, Mitsuhiko notices his classmate Takuma Sakamoto in the store, who is buying a new pencil board because his previous pencil board broke when he tripped over a brick in the flowerbed and fell down while watching the solar eclipse with Mitsuhiko a few days ago. Genta, meanwhile, notices Kaisuke Danno from neighboring class 1-A in the store, holding a bag of potato chips. Annoyed, Genta asks him if he really wants to buy snacks now, since buying snacks on the way to school is not allowed; Kaisuke replies, caught off guard, that he just wanted to make a note of the brand for his next purchase. He calls Genta an idiot and runs away. Ayumi does not know Kaisuke, so Mitsuhiko explains that he recently transferred to Teitan Elementary School.
Some time later, all the students are at school. In the hallway, Kaisuke tells some classmates a scary story about the ghost of the man-eating classroom. At his old school, everyone knew the story, he claims : "There was once an elementary school student who used to eat snacks in class until one day he was caught by a teacher and choked to death trying to quickly eat all the remaining snacks. That is why the ghost of that student now haunts Japan's elementary schools, demanding more food or it will eat the living students; that is why you have to put snacks in the tray under the desks before going home, so the ghost will be appeased and move on to another elementary school". Kaisuke adds that the ghost is currently haunting Teitan Elementary School. The other children shriek in fear, but then the Detective Boys join them along with Maria and Takuma; Genta immediately calls Kaisuke's story nonsense. Kaisuke claims that the story is true because at his old school, snacks were always disappearing; Genta then wants to know what happened, if no one put snacks under the desks. Kaisuke says that at the previous school, the vase of flowers had fallen off the table, and that the door to the broom closet had opened during class. When Mitsuhiko dismisses these as coincidences, Kaisuke also says that one morning the flowers in the school's flowerbed were burned because they had been set on fire by the ghost. Now Sumiko Kobayashi and Rumi Wakasa join them, reminding the children that it is time for gym class. Conan stares at Rumi thoughtfully.
Later at lunch time, Ayumi, Mitsuhiko and Maria are assigned to food-serving duty. After lunch, the schedule for the rest of the day consists of cleaning duty, followed by another break, and then when the fifth hour begins, there will be the parents' visit. Maria is not so much looking forward to it, since her mother is in the hospital with back pain, but still wants to attend visiting day. This worries Maria because her mother has already dragged herself to the school's music performance while feeling back pain, which only made everything worse. According to her doctor, Maria's mother needs to take it easy in the hospital for a week, but she still wants to attend the parents' day; Maria wishes parents' day was reported to the next week.
In the cafeteria, Takuma stares out the window until he is called by Genta and joins him, Conan, and Haibara in line. Two students in front of them are talking about the school's flowers, as one of them has gotten the feeling that a tulip is missing from the flowerbed. Shocked, Takuma remembers how he broke one of the tulips when he fell down during the eclipse. His shocked reaction is noticed by Conan.
While eating, Kaisuke remembers the flower vase and the broom closet at his old school. After that, he had put potato chips under his desk, which disappeared the next day. When he noticed this, two students came up to him and told him that this was proof of their story about the man-eating classroom. Afterwards, Kaisuke thinks of Genta's words and looks uncertain.
After lunch, it is time for cleaning duty. While the Detective Boys are dragging tables under the supervision of Kobayashi and Rumi, Mitsuhiko notices a crackling sound coming from outside and looks out the window, where he sees that a fire is burning in the flowerbed outside the window. Conan immediately takes the initiative and runs with Kobayashi and Rumi to get a fire extinguisher. Meanwhile, Haibara has Mitsuhiko give her the vase of flowers from the teacher's desk; she takes out the flowers, gives them to Ayumi, jumps out the window, and puts out the fire with the water from the vase. Now Conan, Kobayashi and Rumi also join in with the fire extinguisher, but the vase water was enough to extinguish it. However, Haibara's clothes also got some water during the ordeal. Haibara wonders how the fire could have started; to Conan, it looks like the fire was started by a person. But Kobayashi interjects that the children were always supervised during lunch and cleaning duty, so no one could have gone to the flower bed. Suddenly, Kaisuke sticks his head out of the window of his classroom and excitedly shouts that this is the work of the man-eating classroom, so his story is true. While Ayumi, Genta and Mitsuhiko are rather disbelieving, Takuma and Maria look quite anxious.

Trivia
- The cover of Shonen Sunday #20/2023 show Conan on a lifebouy, surrounded by Ran, Sonoko, and Agasa. On the right corner, there is a preview of Detective Conan cosplay by famous cosplayer Enako.
- The convenience store is likely a 7-Eleven, due to its banner with the three colored stripes. However, its name S-Mart is a reference to FamilyMart.
- The English translation makes the same mistake as the Japanese original version in page 6, when Maria Higashio is wrongly identified as being part of class 1-A in her introduction box.
