Case

Situation

One morning, the Detective Boys are on their way to an abandoned building lot which Professor Agasa has managed to loan from a wealthy acquaintance, in order to practice their soccer skills for an upcoming school match. The lot is located next to an eight-story building, and was formerly the site of a mansion which is already torn down, with only a family-sized pool and a shed remaining. However, when they arrive at the lot, they find the grounds crowded by the police: A body has been found in the pool.

Location: An empty lot Victim: "Gecko" Cause of death: Blunt force trauma to the head Suspects: None known When Professor Agasa unlocks the grounds for the children, he finds the body floating in the pool, filled with water from last night's rain. While the cause of death is known, the questions as to how and why "Gecko" has come to rest inside the locked-down lot, and who might have murdered him, are yet to be found out.

Resolution

Gecko's death resulted from a burglary attempt gone awry, with some unwitting contribution from Tomoe Awaji. During the night before, Gecko had tried to burgle her apartment from the outside (unaware that Awaji had her window secured just the day before). Mrs. Awaji, while filling up her washing machine, was lured to the living room window by one of the lightning strikes Professor Agasa has mentioned, and beheld Gecko right outside her window, illuminated by a lightning flash. Reflexively, she sprayed the window pane with the hose; and the rush of water, reminding him of his near-fatal accident, caused Gecko to panic and loose his grip, resulting in his fatal fall.

While Mrs. Awaji has kept quiet about the incident out of guilt, the death of Gecko was not a deliberate act of malice, and therefore no charges are pressed against her. With the case resolved, the Detective Boys can finally start their soccer practice.
