The police rule out the father and husband leaving '''Shigehide Kariya''', the brother-in-law, as their suspect. Conan points to the fact that Shigehide's books were old fashion and lacked cellphones raising the possibility that Eisuke is the one writing the novels for him. Eisuke reveals himself and confesses to stabbing his fiancée twelve years ago after learning of her affair. The police reveal that the fiancée was also bludgeoned to death, meaning Shigehide finished her off. Shigehide demands evidence, but Ran has an ace in hole. When they were at the house earlier Tomoko had borrowed Ran's cellphone. She found her own phone by sending a message to herself instead of calling. And Eisuke didn't know how to turn off the sound, so Tomoko managed to find the phone and ''him''. So when Ran tried to resend her message to Shinichi she ended up resend Tomoko's message to her own phone, since it was the most recent message on the phone and Ran didn't look before pressing 'Send'. With that Ran manages to lead the police to Tomoko's phone that Shigehide had hidden in his room. After finding Tomoko's phone and the knife used in the crime, they have the evidence to the murder. The wife had made her ringtone for incoming calls sound like the house phone and made the ringtone for incoming message sound like the door bell, so she could hide the calls and messages she was getting from her lover. That was the reason behind those 'door bell pranks' and 'phone call pranks' in the house. Whenever her phone rang or got a message, the house maids would think it was really the door bell or the house phone. Shigehide confesses and reveals that twelve years ago, he was having an affair with Eisuke's fiancée and bludgeoned her when she told him she only intended to marry one of them for the money. As for Tomoko, she discovered Eisuke when she found her phone and used that information to blackmail Shigehide for murder and thus motivated his murder. Later that night, Ran grabs a hold of Conan's phone when he drops it in the car and checks to see the message she sent to Shinichi is there.

Kogoro, Ran, and Conan return to the Kariya home with the police to investigate. The three have established alibis: The father was heard behind the shōji, the brother's shadow was seen by the shōji, and the husband's pipe smoking was smelt. After ruling out the man having an affair with Tomoko, the police's investigation leads them to believe the case is somehow related to a murder twelve years ago which was done by Eisuke Kariya, the third family son who disappeared after being suspected for the murder of his fiancé. The man, who Tomoko had an affair with, turns out to have an alibi. Strange things had been happening in the house lately. An old friend of Eisuke had called Tomoko, to ask about phone calls he has been getting from her cellphone. With Conan's help the police concluded that the thief, who took the phone, must have been someone who wouldn't be disturb for a long time, which is needed to figure out the password to the phone.
