Conan, Ran, and Kogoro take a trip to Hokkaido to see the red-crowned cranes. They run into an old man who takes care of the cranes and he invites them to his house. At the house, the old man's daughter and son rush into the room demanding the reason why the old man is donating his life savings to the city. The group is allowed to soak in the hot spring near the house, but they are called to the house when they find out the old man has been murdered. The old man's son confesses that he's the murderer, but Conan proves that he's not. Using Kogoro, Conan announces the old man's brother to be the killer who set up a spring loaded crossbow and fired it at the same time as the son.

After being asked about his drawings of a home, the man realizes he has been drawing unconsciously, and holds his head in pain. In the hospital, he was revealed to have been affected by amnesia and the pain was his returning memories. The man leaves the hospital. The next day while playing baseball, Genta finds the man dead. Conan finds out the man is an artist who's been missing for a year. His wife is the only one who can identify the body but she proclaims it's not him. Conan proves that the man was the artist by fingerprints he left behind when he came home after regaining his memories. Conan shows them who the murderer was.

Conan, Shukichi, Professor Agasa, Haibara, and the Detective Boys arrive at Yureizaka and are heading towards a graveyard in the middle of that slope. The "seven" and "three" on the incense chariot piece refer to Kiyomasa's Seven Spears and the Three Great Spears of Japan. The overlapping region between the two spears represents Masanori Fukushima, a person of the Seven Spears who owns Hinomotogo, one of the Three Great Spears. The upside-down T is the cartographic symbol for graveyards. When asked by Professor Agasa who the kidnapper may be, Shukichi thinks back to a shogi match he played against the very same culprit. That incident was the culprit's motive for kidnapping Yumi. Shukichi is revealed to be a sharp-minded person. Shukichi wins the Meijin title (the remaining of the seven shogi titles that he didn't posses). Sera invites Conan to her hotel room to talk with him. Yumi kisses Shukichi.

At the police station, the officer confirms it's thirty million yen and it hasn't been reported about the lost and found items. When Sasamoto learns that Takagi is a police detective, she started apologizing to him for thinking that Takagi's a burglar.

In this episode, Kogoro tries to investigate who is always solving the case while he asleep.

However, Kenya doesn't seem to be interested in Ran and asks Ran to accompany Rumi to wake Waka, Kenya's ex-girlfriend. Rumi and Ran has to open Waka's apartment with a key when no one answers. Later, Ran finds Waka on the bathroom floor, but she collapses herself due to chlorofoam in the air. Conan has a bad feeling that Black Organization will attack him or Haibara now. Bourbon stalks Conan as he makes a phone call to Haibara.

This episode begins with a flashback outside Haido Central Hospital, where Tooru Amuro obtains information from Detective Takagi regarding Rikumichi Kusuda and deduces that Rikumichi was shot by a gun. At the present, Natsuko Shibuya, a teacher at Haido Elementary School, receives a call from Jodie Starling while grading math tests at night. Natsuko tells Jodie she needed to meet with some parents soon after. After the conversation, Andre Camel asks Jodie about Natusko, and Jodie tells him that Natusko was her acquaintance. Natsuko was involved in a case while studying abroad in America, and Jodie helped her out. Jodie also reveals that she was able to go undercover in Japan as an English teacher because Natsuko taught her Japanese. Natsuko Shibuya is introduced. Bourbon knows that Jodie and Camel are FBI agents.   Bourbon and Vermouth appear. Jodie and Camel appear. Hidemi Hondou's retrieval and Mystery Train cases.
