Plot

Story

The mysterious gentleman thief Kaitou Kid reappears after an eight-year hiatus, stealing a jewel from a museum and escaping the guards with a magic trick that apparently makes his body vanish.

Meanwhile, at Ekoda High School, it's another ordinary school day for class 2-B as Kaito Kuroba takes a peek at Aoko Nakamori's underwear, causing her to chase him with a mop. Irritated by Kaito's antics, Aoko tells him that he'd never be able to defeat Kaitou Kid's magic tricks. Kaito accepts Aoko's challenge, and leaves school early via the window to go home and prepare to face Kaitou Kid. As this occurs, police inspector Ginzo Nakamori watches a news report about Kaitou Kid's reappearance and Kid's advance notice to steal a gem known as the Eye of the Moon.

Kaito sees the news report as well, and notes that eight years ago is when his father, Toichi Kuroba, passed away. Kaito then remembers a lesson about magic he learned from his father about using a poker face. Suddenly a mechanism causes the picture of Toichi in Kaito's bedroom to move slightly and when Kaito places his hand on the image he suddenly falls down into a secret room below. A jukebox then begins playing a record with a message Toichi left behind for Kaito to hear once Kaito entered the room.

At the same time, frustrated with the way Kaito treats her at school, Aoko seeks help online from Chikage Kuroba, Kaito's mother who is away in France, in order to find out Kaito's weak point. The record message from Toichi ends and a box appears out from beneath the floor containing a white suit, cape, top hat, and monocle. Hoping to get some answers from Kaitou Kid, Kaito puts on the outfit and sets out for Kid's reported heist location, Ono Bank.

Kaitou Kid successfully steals the Eye of the Moon while disguised as a police officer and escapes using a magic trick only to encounter Kaito in the white outfit on the rooftop. Kid attempts to scare Kaito using the same magic trick to make his body disappear that he used on the museum guards before. Kaito sees through the trick and uses the Card Gun to break Kid's mask and mirrors that were covering his body. Overcome with emotion and believing Kaito to be Toichi, Kaitou Kid reveals himself to be Konosuke Jii, Toichi's assistant from when Toichi was performing magic.

A flashback reveals that Toichi died while performing a magic trick on a rollercoaster in which he was meant to escape before the coaster struck a burning building that has been placed upon the tracks. Jii explains he thought that if he took on the role of Toichi's alter ego Kaitou Kid he could lure Toichi's murderers out into the open. Alarmed, Kaito asks Jii about Toichi's death and whether or not Toichi was Kaitou Kid. Jii tells Kaito the truth just as the police manage to make their way to the rooftop. Kaito decides to act as bait to allow Jii to escape and declares himself as Kaitou Kid, taking the Eye of the Moon with him. Using the Hang Glider Cape to escape from the police Kaito notices a strange cloaked figure on a nearby construction site that suddenly disappears from view.

The next night, Kaito speaks with his mother, Chikage over the Internet and asks why she'd never told him about his father's life as Kaitou Kid or why he'd been murdered. Kaito ends up not getting much of an answer to either question and heads over to Aoko's house across the street when she calls him from the balcony for dinner. Much to Kaito's chagrin, Aoko discovered his weak point and serves fish for the meal. As he backs away from the fish due to being scared, Kaito accidentally drops the Eye of the Moon into the mouth of the fish Aoko is holding. When Aoko asks Kaito just how much he thinks the fish costs, Kaito tells her "400 million yen". Aoko then throws the fish in surprise causing Ginzo to catch it and discover the Eye of the Moon. Ginzo then passes out from shock as Aoko continues to torment Kaito with fish.

Manga to anime changes

• The manga version of this story portrays Chikage Kuroba as a stay-at-home mother. The anime adaptation follows the manga's later depictions of Chikage as a globetrotting party-girl who mainly communicates with her son (and his neighbors) through the Internet.
• The scene where Kid spots Kaitou Corbeau is unique to the anime; Corbeau had not been created when the original story was written.
• In the manga, the epilogue scene takes place at school. In the anime, it takes place in the Nakamori's kitchen.
