After a successful sea fishing trip (on some island belonging to Kanagawa Prefecture), Okiya comes with a large boat to take the Detective Boys back to the mainland. They are all surprised, as all were expecting Agasa, and Haibara is additionally scared, as she insists that Okiya has the special “smell” found only on Black Organization members. Conan (behind whom Haibara is now hiding), on the other hand, is not worried at all, and tells Haibara that perhaps her opinion is preconceived. Okiya does not seem to notice Haibara’s fear of him, and helps her get onto the boat when she slips; Haibara appears genuinely surprised by the fact that Okiya seems like a nice person and that nothing bad has befallen her.

=== File 666 - Thirst for Blood ===
+
The boat starts sailing. It is near evening, and the captain, Iwao Ida (whom the Detective Boys got to know in volume 45) suggests that the Detective Boys go to the deck to enjoy the beautiful sunset glow; they obey happily. While looking at the sun falling down the horizon, Ayumi spots something spiking out of the sea. Ida explains that the spike is actually a tiny, oddly-shaped isle called “Ikkaku rock”, and that according to legends it is the horn of a sea-dwelling dragon. This dragon is said to dislike fishermen so much that she will try to sink any boat daring to go near her (for this reason boats tend to avoid the seas around Ikkaku rock), but likes children very much. Upon hearing this, Ayumi and Genta both shout that they want to visit it; so to Ikkaku rock the boat goes. As they approach, they encounter another boat, and Ida reckons that the three young men (called Yusaji Kaita, Rokusuke Oto and Shuhei Aosato respectively) on that boat are divers trying to become friends with some rich entrepreneur’s daughter. They seem to be looking for someone, and when Aosato comments that “it does not appear to be near here” they sail away.

The boat reaches the island, and Okiya and the Detective Boys immediately start exploring. Okiya finds a rock with very recent carvings, and the carvings are katakana characters meaning “mackerel, carp, sea beam, flounder”; meanwhile, Conan finds a single flipper inserted into the crevice between two rocks. He immediately senses something wrong, as leaving the flipper there means that the person that depended on it to reach the isle could not return, and the carvings might be some sort of message. Therefore, Conan decides to head to the other side of the isle to see whether anything is going on there, and he ends up finding the body of a young woman who died a few hours ago of dehydration. Beside the body there is a diving tank and a scuba regulator, and the part of the scuba regulator that is supposed to make contact with the mouth is clean despite the woman having lipstick on. Conan and Okiya believe that this means that someone (for some unknown reason) replaced the regulator after the woman’s death but did not call the police, which makes it likely that they are dealing with a murder case.

Jugo Yokomizo arrives at Ikkaku rock and comes to the same conclusion as Conan and Okiya did after examining the body. He is then told about the strangely inserted flipper and the carvings, but cannot figure out the carver or their purpose. Conan argues that the carver was definitely the victim: he has found a wristwatch on the isle whose abrasions are of a width matching the width of the carvings, and there is a clear mark on the wrist of the victim with a width matching that of the watch. Furthermore, since the wristwatch is well-hidden, it is unlikely that the murderer carved to confuse the police, as he (or she) would want to leave the isle as quickly as possible and thus would simply toss the watch aside after carving. Conan then hands the wristwatch to Yokomizo, who notices the initials H.A. on the back of the watch and the words “Akamine angle … club” the word between “angle” and “club” cannot be seen any more, probably because that part of the watch has been rubbed against some surface in order to make the word disappear).
 +

 +
Having established that the fish names constitute a dying message, Conan further reveals that the victim is called Hikari Akamine, the only child of a banker who opened a branch in Kanagawa Prefecture only recently. Yokomizo is stunned by Conan’s knowledge of the victim’s identity, but before he has a chance to ask how Conan figured it all out, he (and everyone else) is distracted by an approaching boat. It is the three young men that Conan and company encountered a while ago, and they explain (after Yokomizo tells them about the situation) that the victim is their friend, that they often dive together and that she disappeared during a dive three days ago, leaving them nothing but an email reading “you guys, take care of the rest!”. Yokomizo asks how they reacted to the message, and they say that they did nothing during the first two days, as it was not the first time that Akamine disappeared after leaving such a message. Once, she reappeared on the second day after partying all night long on another boat, and was very unhappy when realizing that her friends had called the police (to search for her). They also reveal that Akamine prefers going into the ocean alone (as opposed to going in a group or finding a partner to form a pair, which is a safer and the standard practice) despite not knowing how to swim, and that her stubbornness imperiled her life during a dive half a year ago and resulted in the death of a diver and friend called Yoshiro. Yokomizo wants to know more about this person, but Aosato insists that he has nothing to do with the case at hand; thus Yokomizo asks instead about the band-aid that he has attached under the mouth. Aosato claims that he is just trying to cover the scar formed after popping a pimple the day before; he adds that he did so while surfing on the Internet in a cybercafé (he wanted to see whether there was any news concerning Akamine) and supporting his chin on one of the hands.
 +

 +
Conan notices that all three divers possess a wristwatch identical to Akamine’s; by asking them about it, he soon knows that the word between “angle” and “club” is “fish”. He believes that this word is a part of the dying message, but does not understand how it is related to the rest. Meanwhile, the other members of the Detective Boys are trying to figure out the meaning of the dying message, with Mitsuhiko suggesting that by adding syllables to the fish names, new words emerge, and that by putting them together one can more or less construct a sentence. Haibara remarks that adding or deleting syllables could work, but that there must be a set of instructions contained in the dying message that tell people what to attach or remove and when (in other words, she is saying that Mitsuhiko’s arbitrary approach will likely not work, that they need something systematic). These words seem to enlighten Conan and Okiya, and they soon are able to decode the dying message and figure out the murderer. Conan thanks his friends for inspiring him, and Okiya comments that children’s naive thoughts cannot be underestimated and dismissed.

Conan and Okiya point out that the message sent from Akamine’s email address must have been written and sent by one of her three friends, as Akamine never returned to the boat and could not take her phone into the ocean. The divers agree with the logic, but argue that there is no solid evidence of anyone impersonating Akamine, because of which deducing from this that the murderer is among them is foolish. Conan disputes what they are saying, and tells them that Akamine’s dying message indicates unequivocally that Shuhei Aosato is the murderer. The trick is that the fish names mentioned in the dying message should be “translated” from katakana to kanji. The result is as follows: “サバ” (mackerel) becomes “鯖”, “コイ” (carp) becomes “鯉”, “タイ” (sea beam) becomes “鯛” and “ヒラメ” (flounder) becomes “鮃” (note that the left half of all four kanjis is “魚”, which means “fish”). The word “fish” being removed from Akamine’s wristwatch means that one is supposed to read the four characters without the fish part (i.e. without “魚”). This leaves “青里周平”, which is the name of '''Shuhei Aosato''' written in kanji.

 +
The accused dismisses their findings. He says that this kind of word game means nothing, and notes that if Akamine wanted to incriminate him it would have sufficed to write his name down directly. Okiya says that leaving such a straightforward message risked it being erased, so Aosato instead argues that they have no evidence of him returning to Ikkaku rock after the dying message was written. Conan retorts that although nobody saw anything, that he came is almost certain by following logic. Conan conjectures that three days ago, Aosato, when diving with Akamine, damaged her tank (claiming that it was an accident) and took her to the nearest landmass - the Ikkaku rock. He then promised Akamine that he would return with help, but never did, and her inability to swim combined with the lack of traffic around the isle trapped her on it and led to her dehydration and death. Conan further says that this theory explains the murderer’s need to come back to the isle after Akamine’s death: he had to replace the damaged diving tank (and scuba regulator) with a functional one so that people would not sow doubt on the abnormal state of the diving tank and realize that her death was not an unfortunate accident (in which Akamine encountered problems while diving, was able to swim to Ikkaku rock but eventually died because no boat would approach and rescue her) but a well-crafted murder.

 +
Aosato is tired of yet another evidence-free guess and repeats that nobody has ever seen him do anything like that. But Okiya says that the evidence is right on him; namely, under the band-aid below his mouth. He explains that since the computer mouses in cybercafés are invariably on the right, the hand that Aosato used to support his chin must have been the left one. But the band-aid is on the right side of his face, which his left hand could not have reached. Yokomizo realizes that Aosato was lying, and thus tears off the band-aid; this reveals that what he was trying to hide is a lipstick mark. Conan explains that after replacing the diving tank, he had to dive back using the damaged one, which had lipstick on it and thus left a mark on his face. Yokomizo carries on where Conan leaves off and says that lipstick cannot be easily wiped off or washed away, which is why Aosato had to cover the mark with a band-aid.

Aosato, knowing that his whole plan has been uncovered, finally admits guilt. He says that during the dangerous dive half a year ago, when the three divers on the boat lost sight of Akamine because of the dreadful weather, Yoshiro jumped into the sea to look for her. A while after, Akamine appeared beside the boat, demanded that she be dragged up and indicated that she had not seen Yoshiro. However, Aosato later found that that was a lie, which he believes suggested that she did not care about Yoshiro at all. He shouts that for that he stranded Akamine on Ikkaku rock, and that now he will do so again. As he says so, he grabs Ayumi, produces a dagger, demands Yokomizo make his subordinates (on the police boat) leave and orders Ida to cut the tie and let his boat drift on itself (so that he can escape in his boat with Ayumi and nobody else can follow him). Conan realizes in dismay that none of his “weapons” is on him, and asks Haibara whether she has any. The latter is not able to respond properly, as she suddenly senses something and is horrified to the core. Haibara turns around, and sees Okiya calmly (but somehow also viciously) inform the murderer-kidnapper that the overwhelming majority of criminals that attempts to escape is eventually brought to justice, and that among the ones protected by Satan himself (i.e. the ones that manage to not be caught), most lives in a state of fear so mentally exhausting that they eventually commit suicide or turn themselves in. Okiya continues to say (while approaching Aosato) that for those reasons, the success rate of a fugitive is infinitesimal, and that Aosato must prepare himself for the immeasurable loneliness and stress that accompanies a a life on the run. Aosato is apparently shaken by the brutal truths that Okiya has uttered, and in an attempt to restore his confidence points his dagger at Okiya. This turns out to be counterproductive, as Okiya is completely unafraid and takes advantage of this to hit Aosato’s extending arm and send the dagger flying in the air. As Aosato stupidly watches his weapon fall into the bottomless sea, Okiya swiftly steals Ayumi from him and tells her gently that the danger is over. As Yokomizo escorts the defeated Aosato away, Ayumi, Genta and Mitsuhiko cheer for Okiya, but Haibara only gets more frightened. She hides behind an unconcerned Conan, holds onto him tightly and thinks to herself that Okiya is undoubtedly from the Black Organization.

Ikkaku Rock Case

File 664 - Ikkaku Rock
