Believing the murderer is after the inheritance, Shinichi surrenders his share and takes up his mother's surname, Kudo, and has Heiji investigate the murders. Heiji and Conan drop by Kudo's home only to find out from his personal care assistant, Funae Abukawa, that he is asleep. After half an hour, they discover Kudo dead from Carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a single charcoal burner. Their investigation reveals Abukawa is the murderer, as Kudo's body revealed he died much earlier and a single charcoal burner would take too long to fill the entire room. Abukawa confesses to have set up the crime scene but explains she found Kudo dead in his closet and was threatened by the murderer to cover that fact. Heiji and Conan discover a pink pearl in Kudo's mouth and perceive it as a dying message to indicate the murderer. }}

|summary= Conan and Heiji decide to pay a visit to the Inubushi Castle along with Kogoro, Ran and Kazuha to find out more about the dying message. On the way there, they almost drive off a cliff but they are warned by Miyuki Inubushi; one of the adopted children and they stopped just in time. Miyuki leads them to the house where they meet three more of the eight adopted children: Takako Inubushi, Tomoaki Inubushi and Yoshiya Inubushi. They also hear about one of the myths of a blazed demon dog that has cursed the Inubushi Castle. The myth states that one of the ancestors burned a dog alive when the only daughter of the Inubushi family went missing. They searched for her but when the Inubushi dog came back with the daughter in it's jaws, injured and near death; the master of the house whipped the dog endlessly and then set it on fire. But when the daughter regained consciousness, she told the master that the dog saved her as she was lost in the mountains and collapsed. But he regretted his actions and made proper grave for the dog; the next day, there was a fire and the only one that did not make it out of the fire was the master. Since then, it was said that the castle has been cursed. When Conan, Heiji, Kogoro, Ran, Kazuha and Miyuki go to see the grave of the demon dog below the cliff, Saki, one of the adopted children; goes over the cliff with her bicycle and falls right in front of them and claims that she was chased by a fiery demon dog, she dies later because of this. They all find out that near the murders of the other children, there were some sort of spheres near by so Conan and Heiji go to investigate.}}

After examining the security of the safe, Kaitou Kid's card, in its usual style, is found confirming Kaitou Kid's plan to open the safe. Conan suspects that Kaitou Kid is one of the three newly hired workers of Jirokichi. Jirokichi however countinues to proclaim it to be the work of an imposter, causing Conan to suspect Jirokichi's behavior.

Back at the crime scene of the cliff, Heiji and Conan determine that the marble and the other spheres at the crime scene had nothing to do with the case. After that, Heiji gets a call from Kazuha who tells him what had happened. They realize that the dog maybe raise at a cabin in the forest. Just then, Tomoaki, another adopted child; gets pounced on by the demon dog. }}

Jirokichi leaves with his bodyguard for a drive. Shortly after, an unconscious Jirokichi is found tied up and his room and a note of Kaitou Kid is found on the safe. This causes the whole police force that are guarding the safe to abandon their position and chase after "Jirokichi". Conan meanwhile enters the room with the safe revealing the maid was Kaitou Kid in disguise. Conan reveals the first message by "Kaitou Kid" was actually done by Jirokichi asking for Kaitou's kid assistance. Conan also reveals Jirokichi purposely placed suspicion on himself in order to clear the area of cops so Kaitou Kid can open the safe. Inside the safe is revealed to be Jirokichi's dog, Lupin.

Conan and Heiji found an evidence in the place where Tomoaki got pounced by the demon dog. While Conan, Heiji, Kazuha and Ran are eating they're dinner they learned that Satomi collapsed, when the party arrived in the room where Satomi is they found prayer beads that leads Conan and Heiji to another clue in solving the case. In the middle of the night while everybody is resting Ran asked Kazuha to accompany her to the toilet, still afraid of the demon dog. Mouri mocks Ran that she is not a child anymore so she should go to the toilet alone. Ran and Kazuha told Mouri about how Conan and Heiji already know who is the suspect among the adopted children. When Ran and Kazuha told Mouri that Conan and Heiji told them that Satomi deliberately got out of her futon and get the prayer beads and how she removed the other beads so that only eight would remain, the folklore during the Edo period named, Nansou Satomi Hakkenden came to his mind and told the two ladies about how it is connected with the adopted children's names. Learning that Miyuki might be the suspect both Kazuha and Ran went to Heiji and Con's futon only to learn that they are not there. When they left their room they learned that Miyuki left the house leaving behind a letter that she would atone for the killings that she've done. All them looked for Miyuki and arrived at the cabin that they previously found and saw Miyuki's motorcycle there. The demon dog later appeared and charged towards the cabin but Conan bravely stands on its path. They later learned that it is just an ordinary dog dressed in a cloth called "imitation fire". Later Con and Heiji deduced that Tomoaki is the culprit, faking his accident with the demon dog and framing Miyuki as the culprit. Tomoaki later admits to his crime and told everyone that it was all because of the inheritance.}}

Season 20 aired in 2015. This year, there were a total of 41 episodes: 19 for manga adaptation; 22 for anime-original. Remastered broadcast for 7 weeks. TV Special Happy New Year, Kogoro Mouri aired in regular schedule for 1 week. There were breaks totalling to 3 weeks.
