| Rum sits in his Bentley S2 and remembers that he should have taken out Asaka after the car accident 17 years ago, despite all the witnesses, then he wouldn't have to wait so long for no reason. Meanwhile, he hears Chianti laughing over the radio, so he asks her what's so funny. Chianti looks at her cell phone, where she discovered a report on a news site that a nearby store was robbed by a person armed only with a knife; Chianti finds it amusing that such things still happen in this day and age. Rum, on the other hand, finds it less amusing that Chianti prefers to use her cell phone rather than her rifle scope and goes through the description of the target with them again: a woman with long hair and a striped umbrella, just under 170 centimeters tall. Rum demands maximum concentration and no hesitation when shooting.
| Meanwhile, Conan explains to Kuroda his conclusions about the news of Amanda Hughes' death, even if he is still missing some details. Kuroda says that's no problem, maybe he can fill in the gaps. Conan points out that the watch's face shows the remains of a wiped-away lip print; Amanda didn't get the print right the first time, so she needed a second attempt. Conan interprets this to mean that Amanda wanted to point to the shape in particular, i.e. to words like "lips" or "mouth". Since the lip print is cut off on both sides of the watch face, Conan assumes that Amanda wanted the first and last letters of the word to be removed. For "lips" that would be "IP", an internet term; but Conan finds it much more plausible that the word "mouth" was what she meant, because that would mean "out". Combined with an English word "watch", the death notice gives the message "watch out", i.e. a warning to be careful of something. However, Conan doesn't know what. Since the knight's eyes were smeared with lipstick, it makes sense to be careful of someone's eyes; Conan asks if it reminds Kuroda of something. Kuroda is actually reminded of his brief encounter with Rum; at the time, Kuroda had noticed the strange pupil in his left eye, which looked like the eye of a snake.
| Now Conan asks whether the bodyguard Asaka really looked like Rumi Wakasa. Kuroda thinks so, but Asaka was wearing sunglasses at the time, so he is not 100% sure. Because of Rumi's dark looks in his direction during their previous meetings, Kuroda suspects that Rumi still thinks he killed Amanda and Koji Haneda back then. Conan wants to question Rumi himself and pulls out his cell phone, where he sees five missed calls from Professor Agasa; Conan calls back. Agasa calls and explains that he, the Detective Boys, Sumiko Kobayashi and he are going to a restaurant and that Conan should follow as soon as he is ready. The group is already in the lobby of West Topia, on the way out. Conan wants to speak to Rumi, but Agasa explains that Rumi has already gone home and, despite the rain, without an umbrella. This surprises Conan, as it is raining very heavily. Agasa goes on to explain that Rumi accidentally broke Kobayashi's umbrella and therefore gave her own umbrella to Kobayashi.
| |||
| At that very moment, the group steps out the door and Kobayashi opens Rumi's striped umbrella. Chianti and Korn immediately take aim at her; Korn aims at her head, Chianti at her torso. Conan immediately recognizes the danger behind Rumi's actions and tells Agasa that Kobayashi should not open the umbrella under any circumstances, but suddenly the connection is lost because Agasa's cell phone battery is empty. Rum observes the woman with the umbrella with binoculars and notices that this woman is wearing different shoes than the target. He orders Chianti and Korn to wait in a loud voice, but the two shoot at that moment; Rum's loud exclamation in their ears startles the two snipers and they miss their target, Korn only hits Kobayashi's umbrella and Chianti's shot bounces off the ground. The snipers complain that Rum's exclamation disturbed their concentration, but Rum replies that they should look at the supposed target. Chianti is shocked to see that this is a different woman than the one in the camera images. Rum wonders how that can be, because Asaka definitely had the striped umbrella. Then he has a shocking realization; he asks Chianti about the report about the robbery that she had seen on her cell phone and wants to know what kind of shop was robbed. Chianti remembers that it was a gun shop that was very close by.
| |||
| Chianti has barely finished her sentence when another shot rings out, hitting her in the shoulder and throwing her to the ground. Another shot follows, but Chianti crawls away from the window, out of the line of fire. Korn realizes that someone has shot at her from the roof of West Topia: it is Rumi, who is looking through the scope with her hood pulled up and a hunting rifle at the ready. Rum realizes that Rumi arranged for the two snipers to shoot another woman so that she could determine their position and return fire. In chess, such a maneuver would be called a Queen's Gambit, thinks Rum. He orders a retreat, but looks again at Kobayashi, who thinks that the umbrella has been caught in the strong wind. Rum attests that Rumi does not see these people as her friends, but only as pawns on a chess board. As his car drives away, Rum recaps that he probably cannot get to Asaka using normal methods; he covers his missing left eye and decides that he must now turn back time for his right eye, assuming that the poison works as he thinks it will, and Rum thinks of the APTX 4869. On the roof, Rumi looks after Rum's car and looks at Kohji's shogi piece in her hand; she thinks again of him carrying her to the bookshelf and clutches the piece in her fist.
| |||
| Some time later, Conan is standing in front of the door of the Mouri Detective Agency, where Ran and Kogoro are watching Yoko Okino on TV, and is on the phone with Shuichi Akai, who is at the Kudo Residence. Conan tells him about all the events; after the phone call with Agasa, Conan had a bad feeling and ran out of the building, but outside everything was already over and it only looked as if the wind had broken the umbrella, and there were no other signs of an assassination attempt; the children only said that they had heard thunder three times. Conan recaps that with Kuroda's stories and Rumi's behavior on the beach trip, it is very likely that Rumi Wakasa is actually Rachel Asaka. Akai agrees and suspects that Rumi did not want to go into the water at the beach to hide scars she got when escaping the burning car wreck 17 years ago. Conan brings up how Akai once mentioned that his father was involved in the case and asks him for more details. Akai explains that Tsutomu was a friend of Kohji Haneda's father; Tsutomu was an agent with MI6, which is why Kohji's father asked him to investigate his son's death, as he had no faith in the abilities of the police, whether Japanese or American.
| |||
| Akai remembers how his father got the call from Kohji's father while Akai himself was playing cards with Shukichi and Mary. Tsutomu promises Kohji's father on the phone that he will travel to America and investigate the death. Mary asks her husband when he plans to go to America; Tsutomu says he's taking a plane tonight. He was going to his friend Amanda Hughes's funeral anyway, so it doesn't make much difference. Mary wonders if she should be worried, and if she shouldn't come along instead; Tsutomu, on the other hand, is more concerned about Mary's cooking skills and whether the family will eat properly in his absence. He kisses Mary on the cheek and promises her that he will be back before her family gets any more, alluding to Mary's pregnancy with Masumi at the time. In the present, Akai tells Conan that it gives him a headache how Amanda's bodyguards were so easily exposed and eliminated 17 years ago. Conan agrees that it is amazing how precisely the bodyguards were hunted down without catching a single wrong person. He suspects that Amanda's death notice was referring to this: there is someone behind the whole operation back then, whose sharp gaze they should be wary of, and more than ever.
