| One day, while having dinner, Ran mentions that Teitan High School has been haunted by a ghost recently and asks Kogoro for help. Kogoro replies that it must be a prank and refuses to go, but Conan is curious and willing to investigate. So one day after school, Conan heads back to his old school, accompanied by Ran and Sonoko. They meet some of Conan's former classmates (and also Ran and Sonoko’s current classmates), and he senses a profound nostalgia and becomes frustrated by the fact that he has not been able to regain his adolescent body and, additionally, allowed Vermouth to escape in their last confrontation. He is having some further thoughts about Vermouth when Dr. Araide appears before him and his company. Conan, thinking that Vermouth has come back to the school in disguise, is petrified. Araide notices Conan’s abnormal facial expression and mouths in his ears that he is the real Tomoaki Araide, that he has returned to Japan because Vermouth had already been exposed by the FBI (and thus FBI thinks that he is no longer in danger) and because his maid and grandmother could not adapt to life in the United States. Conan is greatly relieved by this assurance and, after Sonoko’s request, Araide joins Conan and company in their ghost investigation.
| |||
| Sonoko shows the rest of the “investigators” around the school and points out (and overdramatizes) three occasions of haunting, all related to a deceased former student called Hideaki Hosaka. Firstly, a female student heard a sound resembling sobbing when she entered the school's sports storage room on a rainy morning, and the desk and chair of Hosaka were in that storage room (and the desk had his signature on it). Secondly, four books that Hosaka borrowed when he was still alive were thrown around in the library, one book at a time, for four consecutive days. And thirdly, below the stairs where Hosaka fell to his death there was once a large amount of water, which Sonoko believes to be the "cursing tears" of Hosaka. During their tour of the school, it starts raining, and the four investigators encounters three third-year students: Kazumi Tsukamoto, who believes that the first haunting event was simply due to violent wind and that the second was caused by a prankster (whom she would like to punish if exposed); Kunishige Seko, who is feeling unwell and thus has to rest in the nursery of the school; and Masao Monobe, who is trying to concentrate on his drawing and becomes infuriated when the investigators make a large amount of noise when talking about the stairs right beside the arts room.
| |||
| Conan points out that the water below the stairs might have accumulated simply because the window nearby was accidentally kept open while raining. Ran seems convinced of this and of explanations offered by Tsukamoto and no longer believes that the ghost exists (but Sonoko is furious at Conan for having reduced her overdramatized story to such a simple and boring explanation). However, she soon changes her mind: when glancing out of the window, Ran sees a desk and a chair in the yard of the school; they were previously not there. Conan and Araide rush downstairs to see what is going on and find the desk and chair to be the ones of Hosaka; and there is a piece of paper on the desk saying "my hatred has not dissipated yet". Conan comments that since the piece of paper is dry, the desk and the chair must have been brought to the yard after the rain has stopped a little while ago, and he is puzzled to see that there is no footprint on the muddy ground, which whoever moved the desk and chair there should have left.
