Chapter 15

A young man in a deerstalker hat and inverness coat identifies the culprit of a criminal case, an older businessman. The man admits his guilt, and when asked why he would commit a crime, that it was for the sake of his sick daughter. The young man pats the culprit on the shoulder as news cameras flash.

The next morning, the newspaper praises Saguru Hakuba, lately arrived from London, for solving the case, and wonders whether he might be able to catch Kid. Ginzo Nakamori reads the headlines and scoffs at Saguru always asking for the criminal's motive, because Nakamori doesn't believe a criminal could have a reasonable motive. A nearby officer hopes to see a showdown between Saguru and Kid anyway, but Nakamori roars that he will be the only person to catch Kid. The sudden arrival of a Kid notice only fires him up further.

From the ice-skating rink at the edge of Tropical Land, Kaito uses binoculars to watch the painting "Adam's Smile" arrive at the museum across the way. His scheming is interrupted by Aoko, on ice skates, declaring him the criminal, though it turns out she's only quoting Saguru's signature accusation-and-question. Unnerved, Kaito argues with her until she skates off, but when he tries to chase her, it becomes clear that Kaito can't skate at all. In the end he has to politely beg Aoko to give him a ride off the ice because he keep falling to the ground on his own.

That night, Nakamori prepares his team of officers for Kid's arrival. As they go to synchronize their watches, Nakamori hesitates with the time, and is interrupted by the date and time down to the millisecond. Saguru Hakuba has arrived, with a silver pocketwatch, inverness coat, and high attention to detail. Nakamori recognizes Saguru from the paper, but dismisses him as an amateur until Superintendent General Hakuba, the head of the Tokyo police force and Saguru's father, persuades Nakamori to show Saguru the ropes of real police work. Convinced to work with Saguru, Nakamori offers to answer any questions, only to be interrogated about details regarding Kid that no one has answers to. Saguru then leaves to conduct his own investigation around the museum. Outside the museum, a bored policeman complains about the snow just before Kid knocks him out and steals his identity to access the museum, though Nakamori unknowingly berates Kid for not being at his post inside the art gallery. Back outside, Saguru sees a police notebook dropped in the snow of the entrance stairs and investigates the police cars to discover the bound, gagged, unconscious and half-naked officer. He visually inspects the outside of the museum further, and appears to have figured out at least part of Kid's plan. At the promised time, smoke emits from the barriers around the painting and obscure it. When the smoke clears the painting appears to have been replaced by a thank-you message from Kid.

Nakamori leads the charge after Kid, leaving one officer still recovering from the smoke, until the officer reveals himself to be Kid. Kid removes the painting from beneath his message and is about to leave when Saguru stalks into the room proper, demeaning Kid's petty, misdirecting illusions. Saguru announces that Kid is too late to succeed, but Kid abruptly loses the disguise and leaps to the upper balcony, confident in his escape plan. Saguru, however, has already cut the rope of the advertisement balloon Kid planned to use; with Kid cornered, Saguru asks why Kid steals. Kid counters that it is Saguru's job to discover why, and uses his hang-glider to escape, despite poor weather conditions for hang-gliding. The high winds catch Kid's cape and drop him right in front of Nakamori and his men, forcing Kid to flee on foot. He accidentally runs into the ice-skating rink just as he finished blowing up a dummy-double, and throws it to glide off just as he start to lose balance on the ice. Kid flops and falls multiple times while the blow-up dummy glides smoothly away, and Nakamori decides that Kid couldn't possibly be so incompetent as the real Kid is being. The police chase after and dog-pile the dummy, realizing their mistake too late to catch the real Kid. Saguru jots down in his notebook that Kid can't skate, looking amused by the knowledge. The next morning at Ekoda High School, Kaito gloats that even Saguru couldn't stop Kid at all, to Aoko's displeasure. She wonders what Saguru might be like; Kaito dismisses him, only to hear the new student give the same sort of time-oriented introduction that Saguru gave the police last night. To Kaito's complete and utter shock, it turns out that Saguru is their age, and has just transferred into Kaito and Aoko's class at Ekoda High.

Chapter 17

Akako continues to be frustrated by the fact that Kaito Kuroba - and by extension, Kaitou Kid - are immune to her magical charms. In an attempt to calm her, her crystal ball shows her a vision of the future: Kaitou Kid will soon be arrested by Saguru Hakuba, and disappear from her life entirely.

Several nights later, Kaitou Kid steals a jeweled necklace, once again eluding Saguru and the police. Saguru, however, does not consider the night a total loss. During his escape, Kid had left behind one vital piece of evidence: a hair. Saguru uses his uncle's research lab to analyze the hair's genetic material, and concludes that Kaitou Kid can only be Kaito Kuroba.

The next morning, Saguru personally invites Kaito and Aoko to the Ochima Art Museum, where Kid's next heist is to take place. Though Kaito is initially suspicious, his ego wins out, and he accepts. Akako attempts to dissuade Kaito, but Kaito rebuffs her, explaining (without confessing his double identity) that Kaitou Kid would never back down from a challenge. A stung Akako tries to rejoice over Kid's imminent downfall, but finds that she cannot.

At the museum, Saguru handcuffs himself to Kaito one minute before Kid's pre-announced appearance time. Kaito is furious, but can do nothing as the clock counts down. As Saguru begins to crow over his victory, however, a second Kaitou Kid appears and completes the heist on-schedule.

While both Kaito and Saguru look on in shock, Kaitou Kid attempts to fly away on a broomstick. Inspector Nakamori and his men then pursue Kid with extending handcuffs, locking the impostor in place. Upon hearing "Kid" scream, Kaito realizes who the impostor must be, and, while everyone else is focused on "Kid", uses his card-gun to shut off the lights and cut the impostor free.

The impostor Kid - Akako in disguise - flies away, swearing that the privilege of taking Kaito Kuroba's freedom will be hers and hers alone.

Back at the museum, Saguru concludes that Kaitou Kid is a double-act, while Inspector Nakamori and his men come up with far more outlandish explanations. Aoko then voices the most outlandish of them all: Kaitou Kid is an okama.

Chapter 18

Kaitou Kid targets the Treasured Sword, a priceless heirloom owned by the Mine family. At the Mine household, Inspector Nakamori and his squad ask to help protect the sword, but are ejected by the Mine matriarch. The Inspector and his men must make do with watching the house's perimeter; meanwhile, the house's youngest inhabitant, the energetic child samurai Yaiba, anticipates the idea of fighting Kid.

Late into the night, Kaitou Kid hang-glides toward the Mine household, but collides with Yaiba's vulture friend Shonosuke in mid-air. Kid falls into the Mines' koi pond, awakening Yaiba's frog friend Gerozaimon, but quickly hides himself. After Gerozaimon's cries are dismissed as sleepwalking by the rest of the household, Kid quickly recovers and resumes his plan to steal the sacred sword. During his heist, he encounters each of the household's three women, but seduces them all into stepping aside.

Eventually, Kid enters the Mine Dojo, and finds the sacred sword being protected by Yaiba.

After a quick duel and some trickery, Kid makes off with the sword and escapes on his hang glider. Yaiba refuses to give up, however, and gives chase on a kite. As Kid and Yaiba fight each other in midair, they are spotted by Yaiba's arch-enemy Onimaru, who blasts both of them out of the sky with a cannon. The Treasured Sword falls to the ground below, where Inspector Nakamori recovers it. The next morning, both Kaito and Yaiba wake up with an assortment of bruises, and both swear off anything having to do with swords.

Chapter 19

After another heist, the fifth for the month, Kaitou Kid is contacted by a mysterious figure who warns him to stay away from jewels in the future. Kid is left puzzled by the conversation, but dismisses the warning.

The next morning, Kaito crows over the target of Kid's next heist: India's largest sapphire, the Blue Birthday. His joy is quickly interrupted by Aoko, who complains that Kaitou Kid has left her father a busy, sleep-deprived wreck who cannot even attend her birthday party. Though somewhat dispirited by Aoko's hatred for Kid, Kaito agrees to attend her party and perform magic tricks for her guests after finishing an "errand" for the night.

After night falls, Kaitou Kid successfully foils Inspector Nakamori's security measures and steals the Blue Birthday - not knowing that the police had planted a transmitter on it. As Kid escapes onto the museum roof prepares to fly over to Aoko's house, a sudden gunshot shatters his glider, trapping him on the roof.

Kid is soon confronted by a gang of men in chapeaus and overcoats, led by an armed man with a distinctive mustache. This man, mistaking Kaito for the first Kaitou Kid, confesses that he had murdered Toichi Kuroba eight years ago. He then demands the Blue Birthday at gunpoint, promising to spare Kid's life in exchange. After Kid obeys, the man goes back on his word and shoots him, sending him tumbling over the roof.

At the Nakamori house, Aoko begins to worry, wondering when, or if, Kaito will appear.

The gunman, Snake, takes the Blue Birthday to an old-fashioned compound, where his superior awaits him. When asked, the superior explains that his superior seeks one particular jewel named Pandora, which, under the right circumstances, can grant immortality. No-one knows, however, what name Pandora currently goes by, or even what it looks like - thus, the need for constant jewel thefts.

A loud, mocking laugh interrupts the conversation, and the men see Kaitou Kid on the compound's garden wall, still alive. Kid explains that he had prepared a fake Blue Birthday just for the heist, which is what he'd given to Snake. Snake's bullet had struck the real Blue Birthday in his breast pocket.

Kid then returns the real sapphire, just as the police, following the transmitter's signal, surround the compound. As Kid disappears, Snake and the rest of the gang members escape through a network of underground tunnels. Inspector Nakamori and his men then charge in, only to find the entire compound empty and the Blue Birthday in the front yard.

Meanwhile, Aoko's birthday party begins to wrap up, and a despondent Kaito realizes that he could never make it to the Nakamori house before midnight. In desperation, he settles for a long-distance birthday gift: altering the lights on a skyscraper to spell out a "Happy Birthday" message, coupled with a rooftop fireworks show. Upon seeing his present, a tearful Aoko forgives Kaito.

Trivia

• According to one of the banners right next to the TOFU Store, there's an exhibit about Paul Cézanne in the neighbouring building.
• One of the guests on the Christmas party at the end of that chapter is wearing a domino mask like Robin and a Batman shirt. Batman is referenced again in the following chapter in a battle of words between Kaitou Kid and Saguru Hakuba.
• The newspaper in chapter 15 reporting about Saguru's latest solved case is called "Ōshima News", after a past editor of Gosho Aoyama at Shōnen Sunday. Interestingly, it seems to be dated to the year 2057. The Ōshima Art Museum is also named after him.
• The amusement park close to the mountains containing the ice skating area seems to be based on the Fuji-Q Highland close to Mount Fuji.
• "Pecasso" in an obvious play on Picasso.
• Akako Koizumi and Keiko Momoi can be seen talking in the background of the classroom during "Yaiba vs. Kaito!". Akako's role was greatly expanded in the OVA adaptation, while Keiko and the Ekoda High School don't appear anymore.
• The magazine Aoko is reading at the end of the last chapter, reporting about Megumi Furuhata's new career, is called "Non-an", a parody of the real Japanese women's magazine Non-no. The Non-an later re-appears in Magic Kaito and Detective Conan. Megumi's surname is taken from Furuhata Ninzaburō, whose series Gosho really liked back then and who appeard in the Detective Picture Book of the latter series, while also serving as the namesake for Ninzaburo Shiratori.

Ekoda Museum

The distinctive tower of the Ekoda Museum is actually based on one of three popular towers in Yokohama's Naka Ward, the clock tower of the Honcho Building, also known as "Jack's Tower", or just "The Jack".

Mount Fuji

The new morning after the night of Kaitou Kid's and Yaiba Kurogane's battle is symbolized by a caricature version of Mount Fuji, which is a real volcano on the boundary between the Prefectures of Shizuoka and Yamanashi and within sight of Tokyo.

Ōshima Art Museum

The Ōshima Art Museum is loosely based on the Palais du Luxembourg, in real life to be found at Rue de Vaugirard 15 in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. It also served as the model for the mansion of the landlady in the final chapter of 100% Tantei Monogatari and the Kurogane residence in Yaiba.

Skyscraper from chapter 19 (Blue Birthday)

The tall skyscraper Kaitou Kid uses as Aoko Nakamori's birthday surprise in chapter 19 seems to be based on the Sunshine 60 Building in Toshima again, which would also fit the location of her home. Considering the view and the Nishi-Shinjuku skyscrapers visible in the background to the right of the skyscraper from Aoko's window, this would mean that she's living somewhere in the northeast of Toshima, in the Nishisugamo Area (in one of the districts of Ikebukuro, Ōtsuka or Sugamo).

TOFU Department Store

The "TOFU Department Store" is a pun on the "TOBU Department Stores", with its first and most well known subsidiary in Ikebukuro, Toshima.

• To Chapter 7: Stay Away From Him: Aoko Nakamori's teasing of Kaito Kuroba's inability to ice skate, telling him about the time he teased her about not being able to ski, is a reference to the plot of that chapter.

Cameos

• Gosho Aoyama appears with the text "GOSHOW" on the back of Aoko Nakamori's jacket in chapter 14. She wears another jacket with Gosho on the front of it in the following chapter, this time with the text "GOSHO" on the back.
• The man with the sunglasses dancing drunkenly on the Christmas party in the same chapter is Yutaka Tani.

Kaitou Kid vs. Yaiba Kurogane

The chapters included in this volume were all created parallel to Yaiba and hence suddenly contain lots of allusions to that series:

• Yaiba Volume 1 can be seen on inspector Ginzo Nakamori's desk at the Minato Police Department in chapter 14 ("Star War").
• The television at the police department in the same chapter is an ONY, a parody brand of SONY originating in Yaiba when Takeshi Onimaru took control of Japan and changed many real company names into puns with "oni". Kaitou Kid's pocket TV in chapter 16 is also an "ONY TV-E621".
• The TV helicopter reporting about the TOFU heist has a "Bushi TV" logo, the same channel Ana Shioji, her cameraman and Hiroshi Kome from Yaiba work for.
• Ana and her cameraman themselves fittingly appear in chapter 16 to report about Kid's heist at the Ekoda Museum.
• All of this comes to a head in chapter 18 ("Yaiba vs. Kaito!"), a direct crossover between both series, with Yaiba Kurogane, his father Kenjuro, Musashi Miyamoto, Kagetora, Shonosuke, Takeshi Onimaru and his Oni Minions, Sayaka, Raizo, Shizuka and Grandma Mine all appearing. This story was originally published in the 30th anniversary issue of Shōnen Sunday in 1989 (between chapter 12, "Ghost Game" and chapter 14, "Star War") as "KⱯITO" and later adapted as the very first OVA of Detective Conan, expanded by characters from that series.
