Kaitou Kid & Takagi-san Halloween Campaign

The new Kids on the block.

Kaitou Kid & Takagi-san Halloween Campaign was a crossover event during October of 2017 by Manga magazines Shōnen Sunday, Betsucomi, Cheese, Shō-Comi Gessan, Big Comic Spirits, Yawaraka Spirits und Big Comic Superior, which have in common that they are all owned by the publisher Shōgakukan. Several different characters originating from series published in these magazines dressed up as Kaitou Kid for this special event. The event is named after Kid himself as well as Takagi-san from Karakai Jōzu no Takagi-san, who are both from a Sunday series respectively.

During this event, stamps for LINE app were released, as well as trading cards and other merchandise which could be ordered from japanese retailers. Series who partook in this event were:

The illustration of Kaito Kuroba used for the trading cards is the cover of Chapter 34 (Magic Kaito Volume 5, Chapter 6), which was published in April of that year.

The Santa Claus of Summer

... in Detective Conan

Manga

In FILE.53 (Volume 6), one of the suspects explains that he has been to the cinema in Kinza, where they played "The Summer Santa Claus" (Natsu no Santa Claus aka The Santa Claus of Summer). Conan Edogawa and Ran Mouri have also been to that movie, which Conan uses to counter his alibi.
Conan clearly envies Kogoro's idol knowledge, I can see it in his face.

While visiting the house of the Aoshima sisters in FILE.197 (Volume 20, File 7 - 9), Kogoro Mouri marvels at all the pop idol merchandise they have - mentioning several of the idols he recognizes, one of them being Asuka Anzai, the deuteragonist of The Santa Claus of Summer.

"This is a relatively crudely drawn TV movie. We are drawn better today."

During the conclusion in FILE.789 (Volume 75, File 5), the television plays with the audio at high volume, seemingly switching between channels. The last show heard and seen is The Santa Claus of Summer, with parts of the dialogue between Keisuke Hara and Asuka Anzai quoted and an original panel from the one shot featuring Keisuke in his original drawing style being shown on the monitor.

Kogoro's side-glance is suspicious.

While visiting the house of the Aoshima sisters in Episode 121-122: The Locked Bathroom Murder Case (Season 5, Episode 15 - 16), Kogoro and Ran Mouri, as well as Conan Edogawa, marvel at all the pop idol merchandise they have - with Kogoro mentioning several names of the idols he recognizes, one of them being Asuka Anzai, the deuteragonist of The Santa Claus of Summer. In contrary to the Manga, the poster can be seen several times.

The same poster of Asuka Anzai later reappears in the apartment of Kenji Tsujiya from Episode 381-382: Which One's Deduction Show.

Gosho's one shots were seemingly really successful in Conan's world.

During the conclusion in Episode 662: Kogoro-san is a Good Man (Season 21, Episode 17), the television plays with the audio at high volume, seemingly switching between channels. The last show heard and seen is The Santa Claus of Summer, with parts of the dialogue between Keisuke Hara and Asuka Anzai quoted and an original scene from the OVA recreated, featuring Keisuke being shown on the monitor.

H2 is a Manga not by Gosho Aoyama, but his good friend Mitsuru Adachi.

A rather subtle link: Senkawa High School (千川高校 Senkawa kōkō?), the fictional school mentioned as the one Keisuke Hara attends in his second year, is reused as a recurring setting in this Manga.

After getting amnesia, Keisuke Hara is transported to Ono Central Hospital. The name "Ono" (小野) is later on used a lot in Magic Kaito for other buildings and a newspaper (Ono Bank, Ono Real Estate, "Ono Shimbun", etc.), implying it to be some kind of location in Tokyo - maybe a shared one.

At the end of FILE.12 (Volume 2, File 3), Conan Edogawa sleeps in front of the TV in the Mouri Detective Agency on which Yaiba Kurogane can be seen, wielding the Haō-ken with the energy blade he uses in his final battle against Takeshi Onimaru in his demon form during Chapter 233 - 236 (Yaiba Volume 23, Chapter 1 - 4).

A rock-solid Easter Egg... Okay, I admit, that was bad.

One of the stone statues inside the seemingly haunted house the newly founded Detective Boys enter in FILE.17 (Volume 2, File 8) is (fittingly enough) the Rock Soldier from the so-called "Pyramid Arc" of Yaiba, who appeared in Chapters 178 - 181 (Yaiba Volume 18, Chapter 2 - 5).

Considering that Ran met the game protagonist's rival in person by now...

Conan uses a "Game Man" handheld and a (fictitious) game called "YAIBA no Daibōken" ("YAIBA's Great Adventure") to distract Ran Mouri from the fact that he's Shinichi in FILE.28 (Volume 3, Chapter 9). While acting like he's playing it, Conan also mentions Onimaru as adversary. The highscore list of the game is the deciding evidence for Conan to solve the case in the end.

Yaiba as Hentai Kamen "Kamen Yaiba".

FILE.36 (Volume 4, File 7) marks the debut of the Detective Boys' favorite superhero, "Kamen Yaiba". His name is not just a combination of "Kamen Rider" and "Yaiba", he's also a reference to a moment from the Manga of Yaiba, when Yaiba Kurogane put on Sayaka's underwear like a mask to protect himself from the attacks of the Sugi Pollen Soldier, resembling the Rider a bit and jokingly calling himself "Kamen Yaiba".

Probably because it's an evil man shown on TV.

In the same chapter we get the first appearance of an ONY product: The television in the display window showing the arrest of Capane. After Takeshi Onimaru took control of Japan in Yaiba, a lot of company names were "oni-fied", with almost all of them being plays on brand names from real life - with SONY of course becoming "ONY". Gosho Aoyama later on integrated this fictionalized company in Magic Kaito, Detective Conan, as well as their derivatives and adaptions, too.

Furthermore, one of the hints for the treasure hunt is the "hat" referring to the sign board of a "Cafe Terrace Jubei", close to Touto Tower. Besides being a historical person, Yagyū Jubei was also an ally of Yaiba Kurogane in Yaiba. There's also a sign saying "KAPPA" in FILE.38, shortly before the Detective Boys go into the alley Conan tries to get them away from - perhaps a reference to the Kappa(s) living in the Dark Sphere in Yaiba, even though this is more wonky whether it's an allusion or not.

Imagining that song with Conan's flat singing voice...

The cover for chapter FILE.45 (Volume 5, Chapter 6) shows Conan and Ran singing Karaoke in front of a monitor depicting Yaiba Kurogane, while the subtitles spell out "Yuuki ga Areba" - the opening song of Kenyuu Densetsu Yaiba.

Probably makes hellishly good pictures.

The TV in the hotel room at the beginning of FILE.59 (Volume 6, File 9) is an ONY model and the disposable camera used by the culprit is a "ONY Onicolor Flash" (differing in spelling between "Onycolor" and "Onicolor"). Additionally, Satoru Imatake's next novel mentioned in the same case, "Legend of the Swordmaster"/"Brave Sword Legend" (depending on the translation you read) sounds like a reference to Yaiba's Anime Kenyuu Densetsu Yaiba, which is translatable as "Legend of the Swordmaster Yaiba" or "Brave Sword Legend Yaiba".

From bunny to island... is this an up- or downgrade?

The name Tsukikage ("Moon Shadow") for the island in FILE.62 - 67 (Volume 7, File 2 - 7) is identical to one of Kaguya's henchmen in Yaiba.

So, if I'm playing the antagonist... Is this Onimaru's Wario Land to Yaiba's Mario Land?

The brand-new videogame "Onimaru Quest" from FILE.69 - 71 (Volume 7, File 9 - 11) is, of course, a reference to Takeshi Onimaru from Yaiba - you can even make him partly out in his demon form and his distinct armor on the cover Conan is looking at. The game is - again, similar to "Yaiba no Daibōken" - an important clue for the case.

Looks like they were made by some really unsuccessful Mangaka.

Conan, irritated at still being small and having to visit the children's floor of Beika Library in FILE.96 (Volume 10, File 6), finds two books, titled "Kaitō Boy" (= Magic Kaito) and "Samurai Shōnin", which is Yaiba. He comments that these books are "boring", so... nice jab at... yourself, Gosho?

Shizuka Hattori was crying on her old photo from FILE.276 - 278 (Volume 28, File 3 - 5) because she lost against a younger girl from the first year of middle school in a Kendō tournament when she was in the second year - the girl in question being a young version of Michiko Kurogane (the blonde girl in the back of the photo, still going by her maiden name "Tsubaki" at this time, as can be seen on the sign at the wall), the mother of Yaiba and Moroha Kurogane, looking like her daughter back then and making her the first Yaiba character to canonically exist in Conan's world. Gosho confirmed these things in the Shōnen Sunday Special Booklet in 2013.

It's also being told that the bear transformed into a werewolf now and then when drunk.

When Matasaburo Saika explains the origin of the bear Jūbei's name as that of the historical Samurai in FILE.274 (Volume 27, File 5), the latter is depicted exactly as he was in Yaiba in the panel background.

A thunderous applause for this deity, please.

The case in FILE.384 - 386 (Volume 38, File 2 - 4) revolves around two scrolls featuring the Shinto gods Raijin and Fūjin, respresenting thunder and wind respectively, who are important entities in Yaiba - Yaiba Kurogane uses Raijin's sword and gets possessed by the deity a couple of times, while Takeshi Onimaru gets completely transformed by Fūjin and his sword to become his incarnation on Earth.

It's gettin' hot in here.

Professor Hiroshi Agasa wants to sell a kind of onsen thermometer he invented to the owner of an inn in FILE.722 (Volume 72), with the invention looking like a figure depicting Ishikawa Goemon during his execution by being boiled alive in a tub. His Goemon especially looks like the one featured as an antagonist in Yaiba.

Yaiba completely distracts people with his actions even when he isn't actually present.

When inspector Miwako Sato switches on the television in FILE.788 (Volume 75, File 4), Yaiba Kurogane appears, shouting "Here I come, Onimaru!!".

Is this a devil's lock?

There are several references to Yaiba in the case told in FILE.869 - 871 (Volume 82, File 8 - 10). First of all, when the Detective Boys meet Noriya Makabe at the supermarket while browsing through a walkthrough book, they mention the Haō-ken ("Sword of the High/Supreme King") as the mightiest sword of the game - which Noriya possesses, imagining the sword exactly like it looked in its regular form in Yaiba.

Kamen Yaiba also appears on the TV, fighting the horned Oni usually serving as Onimaru's goons. Last but not least, the game console - a riff on the Playstation - is of course made by ONY.

Soshi Okita's introduction.

The so far biggest, direct crossover between Detective Conan and Yaiba has been during the Kendō tournament at Tōto Gymnasium in FILE.990 - 993 (Volume 93, File 9 - Volume 94, File 1). Soshi Okita reappears in a larger speaking role and uses his "Five-Pieces-Thrust" technique from Yaiba again - he also references Zatoichi, just like Musashi Miyamoto did during Yaiba's and Okita's battle. The latter's introduction is furthermore a recreation of his introduction panel in Yaiba. Additionally, Conan wears the uniform of the Shinsengumi on the cover of FILE.991, who were led by Soshi's ancestor Sōji Okita.

"Hi! Have you played Onimaru Quest? It features... me!"

Momiji Ooka and Iori Muga also talk about a student "who is as strong as a demon/oni" during this case, revealed to be no less than Takeshi Onimaru himself - in human form, of course. Ran runs into him, hearing about him already having won two national tournaments at such a young age (winning his third in the epilogue of Yaiba). Onimaru also refers to Okita as "someone [he] wants to cross swords with", which implies that some version of the Nobunaga Oda Tournament happened in the past of Conan's world, too (if the circumstances of knowing each other weren't wholly different in this continuity).

Ran and Okita talk about the photo, telling her about Moroha and her brother Yaiba.

Soshi Okita reappears again in the "Crimson School Trip" during FILE.1000 - 1005 (Volume 94, File 8 - Volume 95, File 2), because that's where he lives - besides being a classmate of Momiji Ooka. Ran Mouri uses the opportunity to return his Omamori to him, but explains that her father accidentally took a look in it because he thought it's his daughter's, finding a photo of Mohora Kurogane inside of it, who is revealed to be Okita's love interest. He discloses to Ran that he has to beat his "great/worthy rival", her brother (= Yaiba Kurogane) first before he can tell her about his true feelings, but asks of Ran not to tell anything to "oppai" ("big breasts", a rather unusual moniker for Momiji) - maybe because both are daughters of absurdly rich families? This also confirms that there is some version of Yaiba out there in Conan's world...

Another interesting thing is the fact that, after Yaiba was finished, fans in Japan loved shipping Moroha and Okita, creating lots of fan art about them, despite there being pretty much no real interaction between each other in the Manga. It's nice to see Gosho did not only know about this, but made this pairing a reality - at least in the canon of Detective Conan.

This kid has a good taste in demons.

Besides a lot of other toys, two of the puppets/plushies Maria Higashio has next to the television in her grandparent's house in FILE.1008 (Volume 95, File 5) are Gerozaimon Geroda and Namako-Otoko, the first being another one of the "Hachi Oni" (Eight Demons) who originally served Takeshi Onimaru and joined Yaiba's group later on. Apropos television: The model seen is by ONY.

"Look at his smug grin! He has to be Kudo."

Soshi Okita is also mentioned and seen on Heiji's smartphone again during this chapter, used as a distraction based on his similarity to Shinichi Kudo, to keep the latter safe from suspicion.

"As soon as I have my rabbit army back you'll be done for."

The suspect Sana Murakami in FILE.1009 - 1012 (Volume 95, File 5 - 8) seems to be an allusion to Kaguya-hime from Yaiba. Besides their general visual similarities, she works as a Bunnygirl, reminding one of Kaguya's trademark costume, and her surname is a reference to the crater of the same name on the Moon, similar to the Moon crater Kaguya's base was situated in. These things are pretty much confirmed with Gosho's commentary through Sherry's Soliloquy, saying:

かぐや様を思い出しちゃうわね・・・
She’s reminiscent of Kaguya-sama, isn’t she?

The Yaiba characters seem to randomly slide in and out of their fictional status by now.

The Detective Boys play a platformer videogame featuring Yaiba Kurogane and Sayaka Mine in FILE.1039 (Volume 98, File 3) while they are at Agasa's house. Their running pose also is a little bit reminiscent of the walking pose they have on the cover of Yaiba Volume 1. If you look very closely at the second panel the game can be seen in, you can spot two character portraits on the right side of the monitor, seemingly depicting the faces of Gerozaimon Geroda and Namako-Otoko, right above Genta Kojima's head.

Apropos Namako: He also appears as Ran's mobile phone strap again, of course.

Namako-Otoko seems to be a pretty popular Detective Conan merchandise, of all things, thanks to his cameo as Ran Mouri's mobile phone strap and wallpaper, as well as her LINE app avatar in the series. You can buy the cute sea cucumber in the form of a stuffed animal, as keychains of every kind and - yes - as a real phone strap, some of it with or without Ran accompanying him.

Important fundamental handbooks for policemen.

One of the books on Ginzo Nakamori's office desk in Chapter 12 (Magic Kaito Volume 3, Chapter 1) is Volume 1 of Yaiba.

Buji TV must have one hell of a program.

The duo commenting on the duel between Kaitou Kid and Saguru Hakuba in Chapter 16 (Magic Kaito Volume 3, Chapter 3) are "Ana Shioji of Buji TV" and her absurdly loyal cameraman from Yaiba, who debuted in Chapter 49 (Yaiba Volume 5, Chapter 10) and also reported about the battle between Yaiba Kurogane and Takeshi Onimaru on Onimaru Castle, as well as about the mysteriously appearing pyramids all over Tokyo, besides other things. There is a reporter similar to her in Chapter 33 of Magic Kaito (Magic Kaito Volume 5, Chapter 5), too, but it's left unclear whether it's supposed to be Ana again.

Furthermore, Kid uses a pocket TV by ONY in this chapter while crawling through the air vents. After Takeshi Onimaru took control of Japan in Yaiba, a lot of company names were "oni-fied", with almost all of them being plays on brand names from real life - with SONY of course becoming "ONY". Gosho Aoyama later on integrated this fictionalized company in Magic Kaito and Detective Conan, as well as their adaptions and derivatives, too.

Kaitō Boy vs. Samurai Shōnin.

In Chapter 18 (Magic Kaito Volume 3, Chapter 5), Kaitou Kid announces to steal a treasure sword from the Mine family and struggles to get past its several family members, including Sayaka, Shizuka and Grandma Mine, who he manages to woo in the end, before meeting Musashi Miyamoto and, last but not least, Yaiba Kurogane himself fighting him with the Raijin-ken and the help of Kagetora, before being blasted out of the sky by Takeshi Onimaru and his minions.

This story was originally a one shot just called "K∀ITO" (a portmanteau of the "Kaito" from Magic Kaito and the Latinized logo "Y∀IBA") and was featured in Shōnen Sunday's 30th Anniversary Special Magazine in 1989 after an editor asked Gosho to draw a self-contained story for this special occasion, deciding for this crossover since he loved similar collaborations like Mazinger Z vs. Devilman since he was young. The chapter didn't belong to either series, since it's explicitly non-canon (or, technically seen, it's a part of both franchises), but was later included as a bonus chapter in Volume 3 of Magic Kaito most people know it as. It was later adapted as a Detective Conan OVA and extended by a plot integrating the characters from it.

Aoko Nakamori's mobile phone in Chapter 34 - 36 ("Sun Halo", Magic Kaito Volume 5, Chapter 6 - 8) is an ONY Smartphone model.

In Episode 7: Kaito Kuroba's Busy Holiday, a girl heavily reminiscent of Sayaka Mine comes into play for a short scene - she's got almost exactly the same hairstyle as her after the three-year-timeskip (same length, same color, the parted bangs, the same disheveled back hair and the long hair over her temples), wears a seifuku similar to her during most of Yaiba's run while attending Ekoda High School (like Sayaka does in Yaiba Volume 24), is friends with Keiko Momoi and highly interested in the relationship between Kaito Kuroba and Aoko Nakamori.

She is never named, but... this is either one big coincidence or we have a pretty clever producer, author and/or character designer here who wanted to create a nod to Gosho's previous series by having a cameo.

... in Monster Hunter

(Monster Hunter also obviously isn't by Gosho. :D)

During a special collaboration event with Shōnen Sunday for the game Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, Yaiba Kurogane's Haō-ken (Supreme King Sword) was obtainable and Felynes could be dressed in the demonic armor of Takeshi Onimaru.

... in Zero's Tea Time

Cat cratch fever.

In TIME.9 (Zero's Tea Time Volume 1, Time 9), after falling down a flight of stairs, Rei Furuya's pup Haro meets Kuro Neko Dokuro, a stray cat and antagonist from a short arc during Chapter 164 - 167 of Yaiba (Yaiba Volume 16, Chapter 10 - Yaiba Volume 17, Chapter 2), whom Yaiba Kurogane and Sayaka Mine were encountering while they were shrunk and he was menacing a bunch of mice. It seems like he didn't improve much since then: He scratches poor Haro's face open. The Mangaka of Zero's Tea Time, Takahiro Arai, confirmed that he asked Gosho Aoyama about using that character in this chapter.

TIME.19 - 20 (Zero's Tea Time Volume 2, Time 9 - 10) are chock-full of Yaiba references, thanks to the game Yuya Kazami is playing:

  • The protagonist "Yuya" is a dead ringer for an adult Yaiba Kurogane (looking a lot like his father Kenjuro) in a Samurai armor, wearing the Raijin-ken (Thunder God Sword) and the Fuujin-ken (Wind God Sword, originally used by Takeshi Onimaru). Yaiba always wanted to be a Samurai like his father, explaining the choice of armor for this Easter Egg.
  • The first boss they fight is the android Gold from Chapters 201 - 207 (Yaiba Volume 20, Chapter 3 - 9), also named "Boss Monster Gold" in Kazami's game.
  • One of the objects in the storage room of the game in TIME.20 looks like a stylized version of Empress Kaguya's fusion with planet Earth from Chapters 162 - 163 (Yaiba Volume 16, Chapter 8 - 9).
  • The second boss they fight is the Cedar Pollen Soldier from Chapters 182 - 184 (Yaiba Volume 18, Chapter 6 - 8).
  • The third boss they beat is the many-armed Centipede Soldier of the Underworld from Chapter 201 (Yaiba Volume 20, Chapter 3).

Yoko Okino and Akiyoshi Fujie are identified as alumni of (the fictional) Kohnan High School in FILE.8 (Volume 1, File 8) - the same school Shigeo Nagashima, Yutaka Enatsu and their friends attend in 3rd Base 4th.

The horizontal school banner in the upper left corner of Shizuka Hattori's old photo from FILE.276 - 278 (Volume 28, File 3 - 5), which also features Yaiba Kurogane's mother Michiko, reads "南高校", which is cut off to the left. It probably reads "港南高校" (Kōnan Kōkō) in full, which of course is, again, the Kohnan High School.

In Volume 43 (fittingly enough) and 44, Conan Edogawa, Ran and her father Kogoro Mouri, as well as Heiji Hattori und Kazuha Toyama watch a baseball game at Koushien, played by the leading teams from 3rd Base 4th, hailing from Kohnan and Ohgane High School respectively, who want to do a rematch of their game from the finale of their own Manga, which is referred to as "one year ago".

Characters from the series who appear are the protagonist Shigeo Nagashima and his rival Kazuhisa Inao and some of their teammates, their coach, Shigeo's friend Yutaka, as well as her father got some cameos, too. In a crossover gag Gosho also uses with Kaitou Kid and Soshi Okita, Shigeo reminds Ran of Shinichi Kudo, since all of them look very much alike.
