Situation

Part 1

After Kogoro and Conan take down a would-be bank robber, they head off to Kogoro's 15-year class reunion with Ran in Tochigi Prefecture. Kogoro's old friends were all on the state-winning Judo team together, but when the beautiful Yumi Horikoshi turns up in her room dead of an apparent suicide, the fun is abruptly ended.

	Location: Alley Victim: Store Suspects: Robber Kogoro and Conan chased the robber into an alley. When the robber prepared to shoot, Conan used his kicking shoes, and kicked a brick at the robber, knocking his gun out of his hand, which allowed Kogoro to tackle the robber. However the gun quickly disappeared from the crime scene.

The killer is Kazushi Nakamichi. To settle their deals and as soon as the others were out of sight, confronted her and shot her in the head by using the gun that had been missing in the bank robbing case, which he stole. He did so at the moment the fireworks were set off, that way, the sound of the gunshot would be drowned out. Kazushi manage to trick everyone (except for Conan and Kogoro) into thinking that Yumi had committed suicide, taking also advantage of how Yumi had mentioned that she did want to kill herself due to depression and her really bad economic situation. Unfortunately, what Nakamichi didn't count on was accelerated rigor mortis, caused by exercising before dying; he played ping-pong with Yumi before killing her, but had to leave the room to make up an alibi when Conan and Ran were drawing close. Because Yumi held a ping-pong racket with her index finger pointing out, it was impossible to move it around the trigger of the gun once rigor mortis settles in.

Conan wanted to drug Kogoro to expose Nakamichi, but when he was about to do so, he heard Kogoro talking to himself about how angry he was at the idea of one of his beloved friends being a killer, then swearing to resolve the case no matter what. Conan was so moved by Kogoro's sincerity that instead of making him sleep, he limited himself to give him the pointers he needed to fully uncover Nakamichi's guilt. One of these was Conan mentioning a statue of the legendary Benkei, a warrior who died while on his feet. This made Kogoro realize the trick that Nakamichi used to fake the time of Yumi's death.

Nakamichi admitted to being the killer, explained why he killed Yumi, and then angrily attacked Kogoro, who then easily used a Judo throw to immobilize him. Nakamichi says Kogoro is still as strong as ever but Kogoro denies it, saying that Nakamichi has become weaker.

Motive

Kazushi and Yumi had been secretly dating for years, yet Yumi refused his marriage proposals no matter how many times he begged her to marry him. However, at some point Kazushi went into an omiai (arranged date) with the daughter of his boss, the two liked one another, and Kazushi decided to marry her instead. When he told Yumi about it, Yumi got so horribly jealous that she started blackmailing Nakamichi with private photos of themselves, which she threatened to send to his fiancé. Sick and tired of her interfering with his life, he made a deal with her to buy all of the photos of them together at the day of the reunion.

The school reunion was supposed to be the last time Kazushi and Yumi would see each other. Kazushi took the photos from Yumi's purse, then told Yumi about that and killed her, just as they .

Manga to anime changes

• The manga starts off at the reunion during the moment where Conan and Ran are bathing. The anime starts before the reunion is held with Conan and Ran trying to convince Kogoro to take them. During which a robbery takes place with Kogoro and Conan pursuing the robber. Kogoro is saved when Conan kicks the gun away from the robber. Afterwards, Kogoro, Conan, and Ran meet with Yumi who hopes to see all of them at the reunion. Meanwhile the culprit sneaks onto the scene to steal the gun used by the robber (though the culprit's not revealed until Part 2).

Episode 219

• Noriko Ayashiro reappears in the one year ago flashback from The Gathering of the Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid.
• The pistol held by the victim is a Smith & Wesson 439.
• This is the first case where Conan lets Kogoro solve the case by himself, although he gave him hints. It is also the first case where Kogoro shows he actually has detective skills.
• Kogoro noticed that Conan managed to kick a brick hard enough to knock the gun out of the robber's hand some distance away, and even asked him about it.
• This is the first episode that Conan exhibits a nose bleed after bathing in the hot spring with Ran, and to furthur excite him, she and Kogoro talk about it, when he is already red faced.
• This is the first episode where a culprit manipulated the corpse with a time of death trick, by speeding up rigor mortis.
• This is the first time that Kogoro performed a Judo throw, as well as a tackle against the robber.
• This is the first case where the culprit is a law enforcer.
• This is the first case to take place in a hot spring inn.
• To be truthful, Kogoro has solved some of the cases before, without being asleep, however they have all required Conan's hint drops, and even input.
• This is the first episode that Conan began to tranquilize Kogoro, but realized that this case Kogoro really Needs and Wants to solve it himself, since one of his best friends murdered another one of his best friends.
• Conan still gave Kogoro hints, but since Kogoro is really trying to solve the case mentally, he mostly gave major hints, which allowed Kogoro to crack it himself.
