Biography
Initially, Yuzo Aoki worked as an assistant of mangaka[3]; he submitted his work to the reader's submission "Gra-Con" (ぐら・こん) of the magazine COM. In 1969, Aoki joined studio A Production (エイプロダクション) after passing its key animation test[4][5]. He then participated in the anime Lupin the 3rd Part I (ルパン三世 TV第1シリーズ) as key animator at the young age of 19[1]. His skilled key frames received praises from the animation director Yasuo Otsuka (大塚 康生), that "Lupin's beloved car of Mercedes SSK equipped with a Ferrari 12-cylinder is difficult to depict and only Aoki could draw it"[6].
In 1979, Aoki began to serve as storyboard artist in Lupin the 3rd Part II (ルパン三世 TV第2シリーズ), and became the main animator for the anime. Then, in 1984, Aoki became the animation supervisor for Lupin the 3rd Part III (ルパン三世 TV第3シリーズ), and was also in charge of the animation and overall drawing quality, this included the role of character design. In addition, he was the episode director of the 1st episode, where he decided to bring back the original style and make Lupin the Third's jacket pink[7].
After finishing the production of the 3rd season, Aoki took part in the production of one of his disciples' work Robotan (ロボタン). In 1987, Kenji Kodama directed City Hunter (シティーハンター), its character designer and chief animation director were all staff who worked in the 2nd season; not surprising, Aoki took part as well, yet under the pseudonym Minato Yosuke (港野 洋介 Yosuke Minato ). This thus became his second representative works, due to the support he had given to the director Kodama.
In 2004, Yuzo Aoki joined the production of the Detective Conan anime, starting with Episode 358: Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story 5 (Part 1), and served as a regular organizer and storyboard artist. Notably, there was a hiatus between his participation in the anime from 2005 to 2007; therefore, it was speculated that Aoki worked in the anime under the name of Yuu Hatanaka (畑中 由宇) in the stint of 2006[2]. In 2008, after Episode 515: Kaitou Kid's Teleportation Magic, Aoki quit the production team.
In 2009, Aoki served as key animator for the last time in TV movie Kon'nichiwa Anne: Before Green Gables (こんにちは アン 〜Before Green Gables), he ceased his involvement and appeared to be retired thereafter.
