Case

Situation

Sonoko's family wants Kogoro to protect their priceless piece of jewelry called the Black Star from the Phantom Thief. The necklace along with other valuables will be on display at a museum where people are sure the Phantom will strike. The Phantom left a coded letter to Sonoko's father and its the first clue.

Heist

Conan meets Kaitou Kid.

After decoding the letter, Conan goes to meet the Phantom Thief face to face at a rooftop of a hotel. He lights a firework hoping that the cops would come and arrest him, but to his surprise Kid imitates the inspector's voice and calls all of the inspector's men to the rooftop. Just when it looks like the Phantom Thief is cornered he escapes with a blast bomb and leaves another note containg another clue.

This time the note states that he will board the ship that is carrying the Black Star. While last time was a test run this time he will actually steal the Black Star. To try and prevent this, Tomoko devises a plan. She has given all the guests a fake Black Star replica in hopes that Kaitou Kid won't be able to figure it out before the cruise ends. Sonoko can't find her sister so she calls her and finds out that her sister and dad are still at home. This means that the Shiro Suzuki they just saw had to be the Kaitou Kid in disguise.

Tomoko brings in a magician to put on a show but Kaitou Kid then drops another letter. Fake Black Stars start exploding and the guests start panicking. Thats when he steals the real Black Star which Tomoko was wearing the whole time. Conan on the other hand has figured out where and who the Kaitou Kid is.

Resolution

Conan tells Ran he knows who Kaitou Kid is and asks her to accompany him to a secluded area on board the ship. He then reveals that only Ran had the opportunity to steal the black star and that Ran Mouri is the thief in disguise all along. Kaitou Kid-as-Ran still tries to continue his act by saying there's no way that he would know which star was the real one. However, Conan says that Tomoko gave away the answer when she described the pearl to Kogoro as having a peacock color (her middle name means "peacock"). Also the way she handled the pearl and the fact that it was duller due to age. This is why he didn't steal it at the museum: that one was too shiny, making it a fake.

The defeated Kaitou Kid comes clean and hands Conan back the pearl, after Conan destroys the phone so he couldnt pull the same trick again. Conan reveals that Kaitou Kid escaped last time by disguising himself as a cop and blending in, but he can stop him now...

Right when Conan is about to use his powered shoes and a ball to try hitting Kaitou Kid, he tells Conan that he knocked Ran out to take her red dress and she might freeze outside in the lifeboat (where he hid her)... since he left her naked. Conan is very flustered and distracted, so Kaitou Kid drops another blast bomb and escapes, leaving the red dress on the floor. A very flustered Conan takes the dress and decides to go to Ran instead, fearing she'd get sick or be found naked - but finds out Kaitou Kid never took her clothes and she's fully dressed. Before the event on the ship, Ran had her dress dry cleaned and the guy who brought it was Kaitou Kid under a busboy disguise; he had made a duplicate of the dress before handing Ran hers. This is explained in a written card Kaitou left for Ran, apologizing for any annoyances and telling her how cute she is.

The next day, Conan makes the headlines as the "protector" of the Black Star Pearl and he's not thrilled with it. As he, Ran and Sonoko walk to school, Sonoko tries to make him describe Kaitou Kid physically... and meanwhile, Kaito and Aoko walk together to their school, not too far from them. A rather unhappy Kaito Kuroba has caught a cold due to having had to jump into the cold sea water to escape from Conan, and Aoko calls him an idiot since she thinks he fell by accident.

• This is the Conan's first episode with Kaito Kid.
• This is the first Detective Conan episode with Aoko Nakamori, if not the only one, although she may appear in a OVA Conan, Kid, and the Crystal Mother and The Gathering of the Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid.
• This is the first Detective Conan episode to feature Kaito Kid's secret itentity, Kaito Kuroba, if not the only one, he may appear in some movies, specials, and Ovas in this form, including The Gathering of the Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid.
• The Black Star is the Kid's target in this case.
• Although this is the first episode with Kaito Kid and Conan Edogawa and their first meeting, they have had a run-in before in The Gathering of the Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid, before Shinichi became Conan, although they may or may not have met at that time. Shinichi was helping the police to try and catch him.
• Sonoko, excitedly comparing Kaito Kid's unknown, but must be this handsome, face to Harrison Ford, Jean Reno, and Brad Pitt.
• When Ran and Sonoko were walking in the rain, she saw Shinichi, but missed her own doppleganger, since that time, Aoka, really looked a a lot like her as well, complete with her horn hairstyle.
• Kaito Kid's international secret number from FBI, CIA, or Interpol, which is more likely, since he is an international Jewel thief from around the world, and not just America, is Kaitou 1412.
• Kaito's international Crime Number is 1412.
• Before Conan knew about the code, his thoughts about the case is "This is stupid. Thieves are boring." However that thought process ended the moment that he found out that their was a code that this thief gives that has to be cracked, which really perked his interest.
• The Teimudu River runs alongside the Beika Museum.
• Kaito Kuroba, in short Kaito Kid, the third one, has a severe Ichthyophobia or fear of fish.
• This case takes place before and after April 1st Holiday.
• * This is the second time that Conan is shown using his watch to determine compass directions of South, North, East, and West, the first being in Detective Boys Survival Case.
• This is also the first time that he stated that he "Shinchi-niichan taught him." in reference to using his watch to tell compass directions.
• Although Conan cracked the code at Beika Museum, he snuck out at night in order to meet the Kid that night.
• Before Conan met Kaito Kid, he referred to him as "strange retro-thief, whose crazy enough to announce his moves."
• Nakamori will state that "Even he cannot disguise himself as a kid," however in The Kirin's Horn That Vanished into the Dark, Kaito Kid did manage to disguise himself as Genta, a very fat first grade child.
• This may be the first time that we see Conan with a cell phone in the series, however it is probably just the wireless landline phone for the Mouri Detective Agency, since it looks like it is the same phone that Conan was using when speaking to Agasa earlier, although he is now speaking to him on the rooftop of the Haido City Hotel.
• However, when Conan hung up from Agasa, he did close it, so it was obviously a cell phone- flip phone, however, it may have Kogoro's if not his own. Although I cannot see Kogoro leaving his cell phone downstairs in the Agency office, so it may have been Conan's phone, and him just speaking while sitting on Kogoro's desk. Although he could have used the landline then, and this rooftop scene is really his phone. However it has not been shown yet that he has 2 cell phones yet.
• This is the first episode that we see Conan speaking on a cell phone, since all previous episodes were on a landline or pay phone.
• After just one short encounter with "Conan Edogawa, Detective," Kaito Kid already figured out his weakness, Ran, considering that "You can chase me, but 'the girl' may catch a cold without this red dress."
• Clear sign that it was Kaito Kid in the guise of Ran, was when everyone was told to pair up, and choose a password, and she paired up with Conan. No surprise that Conan's would he Sherlock Holmes related, however Ran chose "Lupin," a famous thief.
