Case

Situation

Kogoro is hired by Misaki Yanai, an old friend of Ran and Sonoko from middle school, to re-investigate the suicide of her older sister, Nagisa. Misaki believes that her sister didn't commit suicide but was murdered instead. Kogoro phones Inspector Megure and is told that the case was indeed a suicide due to the credible witness testimonies and forensic confirmation, causing Misaki to burst into tears. With Conan's suggestion, Kogoro allows her to retell what actually occurred.

Suicide or Murder?

Location: Yanai High School Victim: Nagisa Yanai Age: 22 years old Time: 6:00 PM Cause of death: Hanging Suspects: Harue Kodama, Toichiro Shibagaki, and Takako Yanai Five days ago around 6:00 pm. While Misaki was talking with Ms. Kodama in the courtyard, Nagisa tied a rope to a beam on the ceiling in the club room and hung herself. As the front door was locked, they called Mrs. Yanai, the principal, for help. Unfortunately, they were too late to save her.

As Nagisa had planned to marry Shibagaki after she finished high school, she has no reason to commit suicide. They later arrange for Takagi to share them the crime scene's photo while Kogoro brings up an interesting topic about the case: none of the three suspects possess a motive to murder Nagisa nor benefit from her death. The group also learns that Shibagaki was two-timing Nagisa and Kodama, causing the latter to broke up with him when she learned the truth. Still not satisfied, Conan, Ran, Sonoko, and Misaki head to Yanai High School to recreate the crime scene with Sonoko acting as the victim. They discovers that the stool Nagisa supposedly used to hang herself contradicts the height and position where Misaki saw her from the courtyard.

This case is murder. The culprit is Toichiro Shibagaki. Originally, the suicide was in fact an one woman act by Nagisa as a surprise for Ms. Kodama due to it being her idea for the school play. As there was a huge model of the school in the middle of the room, Nagisa had to use an item other than the stool in order for Ms. Kodama and her sister to see her clearly: Shibagaki's model tank, which was modified to hide the antenna inside it. Once Nagisa began her "suicide" at 6pm, Shibagaki pressed a button on the controller while he was conversing with the principal in her office, moving the tank and causing the girl to hang herself. In addition, he ordered all the benches other than the one that Misaki and Kodama sat on to be painted that day, as well as locking the front door to prevent any intervention to his plan. The motive is that Shibagaki embezzled huge amounts of money from the school. He murdered Nagisa to force the school to shut down and conceal his crime.

Trivia

• In one scene an action figure of Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid is on display.
• In the episode, several recognizable World War II tanks were shown: the KV-2 (Soviet), the M4 Sherman (American), the Churchill Gun Carrier A22D (British), and the Elefant (German).
