Situation

Part 1

Kogoro is hired by the wife of a rich man named Mikio Fujieda to find out who wants to kill him and had been promised ¥10 million after solving the case. Kogoro however spends ¥8 million(¥3 million from three days of party, another ¥5 from horse race and gambling in order to find money to pay back the former cost) and is unable to solve the case. Ran decides to call her mother, Eri Kisaki, to help solve the mystery. Conan, Ran, and Eri head to Fujieda's mansion to investigate only to run into Conan's mother, Yukiko who is investigating the mystery in place of her husband Yusaku. The two mothers reminiscence about a high-school pageant and how it ended in a tie due to a person not handing in their ballot. Ran reveals that Kogoro has an unhanded ballot from the contest which sparks the interest of the two. Later that night, Fujieda is caught on a camera after being shot.

    Manga to anime changes

    • In the manga, Yukiko wears a cross necklace as an accessory. This is changed to a silver "l" in the anime to avoid doing any religious reference.

    Trivia

    • Detective Takagi's appearance changes a bit strarting from this episode, most notably his shirt (from sky blue to light grey) and necktie (from blue to bluish dark gray).
    • This case marks Midori Kuriyama's first canon appearance.
    • This is the fourth case with Yukiko Kudo. The other three were Conan Edogawa Kidnapping Case, The Cornered Famous Detective! Two Big Murder Cases, and The North Star No.3 Express Leaving Ueno, not counting the backflash in Desperate Revival.
    • Unlike Yukiko's first and third appearance, she was undisguised in this case, just like her second appearance.
    • In this case, Eri referred to Yukiko as a "Teitan Princess, who I was Couldn't beat," and Yukiko called her "The Conservative Mature Queen.
    • This is the case that revealed that the two mothers have not seen each other for ten years, which was before Kogoro and Eri have split up. Which would probably explain why Conan/Shinichi did not recognize Eri when he first saw her in Coffee Shop Murder Case, since he and Ran were really 7 years old, when her parents split.
    • This is the case that revealed that Yukiko Kudo, Eri Kisaki, and Kogoro Mouri all attended Teitan High School, and Eri and Yukiko competed in a Miss Teitan High School Beauty Pageant which shook the school, and they cancelled the competition to end the chaos, so neither one actually won or lost.
    • This case also revealed that Yukiko was already a gifted actress, and Eri, even at the age of 16, received an offer to study at Harvard.
    • This is the case that revealed that Ran's mother competed against Shinichi's mother, in that competition.
    • This is one of the first cases, of not the only case, where Yukiko almost blew Conan Edogawa's identity, and after she accidentally said "My," while hugging Conan, which caused Eri to catch that one word.
      • Yukiko quickly covered it up by saying, "My Grandpa's sister's daughter's cousin's uncle's grandson."
      • In The Cornered Famous Detective! Two Big Murder Cases, she told Ran that Conan "happens to be my grandfather's older brother's daughter's cousin's uncles' grandson."
      • Well, at least she got the her grandpa's sibling's daughter's cousin's uncle's grandson" correct even though the Grandpa's sibling is a different gender.
      • With luck, Ran may not latch onto the discrepancy between this episode and 237 episodes ago.
    • This is one of the first cases that make Conan feel useless, at least at the start due to how highly competent both of their mothers are at handling the case, leaving practically nothing for him to do in regards to investigating the crime.
    • Yukiko recognized the gardener, Kozo Doi, came from the Kochi Prefecture, and told him that she was from Takajou City, which appears to possibly be a fictitious city, although it did cause Kozo to reveal that he is from Kami City, which is apparently not too far from Takajou City, since he obviously heard of it. Yukiko is an actress, and she helped him by getting him to talk, which he was not doing, until he believed that she was from the same prefecture as himself.
    • Conan also revealed that Yukiko once played a part that spoke with a Tosa Accent, and she learned it at that time.
    • This is the first case with Yukiko Kudo, that Yusaku is only in the background.
    • Yukiko had to have been really watching Conan, because when he was just beginning to develop, what will be called his "Prankster Smile," in the future,

and immediately hit him, like Kogoro does, and guessed that he figured it out. The smile was not even half formed at the time, when she hit him on the head, and for the most part, it was still at a mostly imperceptible.

      • This case also makes Yukiko the first person to catch the prankster smile that Conan frequently shows when he figured out the case or trick, and to make it harder to mention, is it never got to be actually formed due to it's emergence being halted at the offset.
    • When Conan made a reference to her appearing on stage as the Night Baroness, he is referring to what certain circles call Yukiko, since she is the wife to the creator of the Night Baron Books, as revealed in Shinichi Kudo's New York Case.
    • This is the first case that Conan uses a lip syncing Yukiko to solve his case.
