Situation
After school, Conan receives a phone call from Jodie who tells him that the Black Organization has received a new member codenamed Bourbon. Meanwhile, the Detective Boys receive a request from their classmate, Kaito Sugiura, to investigate the actions of a strange man at his apartment building which his father owns. The next day the Detective Boys find that the apartment has been burnt down.

The police reveal that all the residents have safely left the building; three people, who were not at home during the fire, are suspected to be the arsonist. The police find Kaito's diary and read Kaito's entry on the day of the fire. The diary mentions three residents and clues: In the morning, the "Red man" will be able to sleep in since it is raining; the "White man" man was able to help him when he fell; the suspicious "Yellow man" returned home at night and was arguing with Kaito's father. They believe the "Yellow man" is the culprit and interrogate the three suspects: Ryuhei Hosoi, a clumsy carpenter who injures himself often; Subaru Okiya, a graduate student who waters the plants of the apartment; and Ginya Makabe, a day trader. The police reveal that Kaito has a collection of model cars and has written Conan's name in his diary as Kuroshiro (黒白 , lit. Black and White).

Deduction Showdown! Shinichi vs. Subaru Okiya
Cast
Situation
The next day, Ran and Sonoko head to Shinichi's house to clean it and run into Subaru. After witnessing his deduction skills, Sonoko decides to ask Shinichi and Subaru to solve a case involving paper planes with weird symbols on it found throughout the city in order to find out who would solve it first. Conan texts Ran the answers to his deduction the same moment Subaru explains his theory; They both believe the plane is an SOS. Subaru reveals that when the paper plane is unfolded, the symbols ··· — — — ··· is Morse code for SOS. The two give Subaru another plane they found with a different design; The plane contains the Morse code of zero with the design of a mobile phone signal on the other side. Subaru deduces that the plane means the victim is in a place with no cell phone reception, meaning he is held captive in a very tall building. The three decide to search for news on the television to find out if more planes were sent. They come upon the news that Ikou Daita, a man of a famous company, was kidnapped three days ago and they realize he is the one sending the paper planes.

Trivia
- The two cases were separated in the manga by The Truth Behind the Urban Legend, Coffee Aroma with Murderous Intention, Kaitou Kid's Teleportation Magic, and The Blue Spark of Hate.
- Subaru Okiya's whiskey in the ending scene is Maker's Mark's handmade Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey.
- This is the first time that Kir has been known to contact the F.B.I., since the arrangement with Akai, before his death in Clash of Red and Black, and it was to notify them that a new Black Organization Member has been active, and on the move.
- When Conan told Jodie that he tried to call her, but it wouldn't connect, Jodie told him that since the Shiranpuri Case, her cell phone broke down for good, and she had to get a replacement, which she is now calling him on.
- Jodie also told Conan that she has a new cell phone number to go along with her new phone, and she sent that one to Kir, so she can update them on what she finds out, while continuing her undercover operation with the organization for both: CIA and FBI. Although not shown, she probably gave Conan her new number, so he can call her as well.
- After Jodie hung up from Conan, his phone made a sound, which may be receiving her new number, so he can contact her if anything important happens, considering their target is most likely Sherry, and Jodie assigned him the task of protecting her, since the FBI may want to, however it would probably just give her location away.
- The first tip-off that the client, Kaito Sugiura, is into cars, is when he was dropping his request into the foot locker, he was holding a paper of magazine with lots of vehicles on it.
- This is the first case that when one of the clients are hiring the Detective Boys, they are really requesting Conan, who they have their own nickname for him, 'Kuroshiro.'
- Subaru Okiya was formally living at Beika City, 2nd Block, number 23, which burned down in this case, before he moved into the Kudo Residence, which is Beika City, 2nd Block, House Number 21, which is next door to Beika City, 2nd Block, House Number 22, which is Professor Agasa's address. So in short, Subaru lived just about 1 and 2 houses down from Agasa and the Kudo place, before moving into the Kudo place. However it was an apartment building, so it probably was not next door to an estate, which Agasa and the Kudo's have. In short, I may have messed up on the addresses, however he difinitely lived in the vicinity of 2nd Block.
- Haibara passes the old and small apartment building of Beika City, 2nd Block, number 23 on her way home to Agasa's place.
- This is Conan's first encounter with Inspector Yuminaga since The Red Horse within the Flames case.
- This is the first time that Inspector Yuminaga meets the Detective Boys.
- The case of the first part begins on July 4th, which is in Kaito's diary, however the original airdate was July 14th, and the Manga was released in January.
- In Subaru's backflash, he was driving a white or silver car with the license plate of 20-80.
- This is the first encounter that Subaru Okiya has with the 5 Detective Boys.
- This is the case that Inspector Yuminaga referred to Conan as, "The boy who put the police to shame."
- This is the case that Conan handed Subaru Okiya the keys to the Shinichi Kudo's house, next door to Professor Agasa, however he did not want Ran to really say too much about Kudo Shinichi to him.
- In this case, Subaru Okiya is aware that the Shinichi Kudo is the son of the homeowners of his new residence, and Ran passes off her 'Detective Maniac' boyfriend as Kinichi.
- Ran goes into more detail, Kinichi is a mystery loving fanatic, however Shinichi, who owns this house is a normal, ordinary teenager boy, with NO special abilities.
- Subaru has observed, after living in the house for only one week, that Shinichi is probably not an ordinary person, due to the following evidence inside of the house:
- For some reason, even though I'm told he lived here, there's no trace of him left at all.
- There are no clothes, or a diary, or even anything like a photo album here at all.
- Subaru observed that Shinichi removed all of the clothes, diaries, and all photo albums from the house.
- When Conan was checking the news on his cellphone, some of the headline stories are Serial Pyromaniac Arrested, Kidnapper commits suicide while fleeing, 9th hit and run this month, and the Paper Airplane Prankster Nuisance.
- After looking at the newsfeed, Conan was wondering why there are so many different cases taking place. In short, Conan is aware that wherever he goes, a case usually develops, however he never questioned it, until now. To be truthful, he is in school at this time, where no cases are actively taking places, however he is aware of 4 different cases due to the newsfeed.
- However, this second case will deal with 2 of those 4 stories.
- This is the first known case that Ran and Sonoko went to clean the Kudo Residence, while Conan was still at school, since they only had morning classes, in contrast to the first graders, who have a full day at school.
- This is the first case that Subaru Okiya meets Ran and Sonoko.
- Sonoko revealed that she and Ran clean the Kudo House every month.
- Subaru Okiya claims to be attending Touto University's Engineering Department as a grad student.
- Subaru had been living in the Kudo residence for 1 week before he met Ran and Sonoko.
- This is the second time that Conan will run out of Sumiko Kobayashi's class, due to the urgency of the case. SOS! Messages from Ayumi was the first, and that was before she saw Conan in action in Information Gathered About the Detective Boys.
- This case revealed that Conan and Subaru's deduction and observation skills are about equal.
- This is one of the first cases that Conan told Ran the immediate care for a severely dehydrated person, so that she can care for him, until the paramedics show up.
- Normally, Conan is able to remain calm, however according to the paramedics, Shinichi was in desperation mode, and was ranting, although, it probably had more to do with Ran heading upstairs, and worried about her. This is probably the first time for him to have lost his calm demeaner, not counting the momentary 7 children melody. and even then, it is brief. in short, this case probably had Conan give a desperate rant to the paramedics offscreen.
