Magic Kaito
Magic Kaito (まじっく快斗 Majikku Kaito ) is a shōnen manga series by Gosho Aoyama, about a thief named Kaitou Kid. Aoyama stopped work on the manga after three volumes due to the fact that he started Detective Conan, which was an instant hit. Chapters of the Magic Kaito manga have been released in Shōnen Sunday since then, and have only been collected into a forth and fifth volume in February 2007 and July 2017 respectively.
Similar to how Detective Conan was heavily influenced by the Sherlock Holmes novels and other mystery stories, Magic Kaito was inspired by phantom thiefs like Arsène Lupin and Lupin III.[1]

Plot
Kaito Kuroba, a normal teenage high school student, stumbles across the secret of his father's death: his father was not only a magician, but the famous phantom thief Kaitou Kid, and was killed by an organization for reasons unknown. Taking up his father's mantle in an attempt to bait the killers, Kaito performs a number of thefts and eventually learns that his father died for interfering in the organization's quest to find the Pandora Gem. Pandora is said to glow in the light of the moon, and beneath the moon and a certain comet, will shed a tear granting immortality to whomever drinks it. Kaito then decides to search for Pandora as Kaitou Kid and destroy it, in order to prevent the organization from obtaining their goals.
There are also many other characters who seek to interfere with Kid heists. Inspector Ginzo Nakamori, the head of the Kid taskforce, is responsible for capturing and unmasking Kaitou Kid to bringing him to justice. His daughter Aoko Nakamori, Kaito's love interest and classmate, wishes to unmask Kid herself so that her father would not have to work as hard. Akako Koizumi, a witch and classmate, uses real magic to try to steal Kaito's heart. Saguru Hakuba, a high school detective from Britain and classmate, try's to unmask Kid through direct challenge. Later on both Akako and Saguru aid Kaito by giving him hints and warnings before heists to prevent him from being caught so they can catch him themselves.

Games
There have been no direct Magic Kaito games so far, but Kaitou Kid/Kaito Kuroba regularly appears in the video games of Detective Conan, often in a role important to the respective plot. Ginzo Nakamori (Detective Conan: The Magician's Challenge Letter!, Detective Conan: Prelude from the Past) and Saguru Hakuba (Detective Conan: Mystery Town) from this series have appeared in those games, too.
Other merchandise
There has been a lot of purchasable goodies about this series, mostly in the vein of the Magic Kaito 1412 anime, featuring its logo or the characters in artwork from the anime on office supplies, keychains, bags, puzzles and candy. Several original soundtracks and character albums have also been released on CD. A copy of Kaitou Kid's top hat and PVC figures can also be bought, including a Figma of Kid. Like most Kid-only merchandise though, the latter was released under the Detective Conan brand.
Kaitou Kid Café
After the success of the "Detective Conan Café(s)", there were also "Magic Kaito Cafés" opening in Tokyo and Osaka for a limited time, featuring characters like Kaito Kuroba, Aoko Nakamori and Saguru Hakuba as accessoires and prints on dishes, food and interior.[14]
Magic Kaito in Detective Conan
According to Gosho Aoyama, he always wanted to throw in a phantom thief like the Fiend with Twenty Faces (from the Kogoro Akechi novels by Edogawa Ranpo) as a one-time adversary for Conan Edogawa in the manga of Detective Conan and then remembered that he already has a character like that: Kaitou Kid from Magic Kaito. Proposing to his then-editor to include him in a special guest appearance, he was against the idea at first, but relented later on.[15] In the end, Kid proved to be so popular with readers that he went on to become a recurring character. There were early hints to their meeting one day long before the encounter, like the shared setting of Tropical Land[16][17], the movie franchise Gomera featured in both manga[18][19], professor Hiroshi Agasa owning one of the RZ-04 robots[20][21] and Magic Kaito books found in some cases.[22][23]
Since their first battle[24], he and some of his entourage have become a mainstay in the world of Conan, encountering numerous of its own characters and having two stories being direct tie-ins between both series. Yusaku Kudo was made the inventor of the "Kid" name in-universe[24], Toichi Kuroba served as mentor in the art of disguising to Yukiko Kudo and Sharon Vineyard and Magic Kaito character Shintaro Chaki debuted in Detective Conan[24]. Saguru Hakuba also appeared, independent of Kid, during a competition of high school detectives.[25] The existence of Chikage Kuroba's identity of Phantom Lady was first teased in a Detective Conan case.[26] Besides those, inspector Ginzo Nakamori, his daughter Aoko Nakamori and Kid's assistant Konosuke Jii became characters who are canon to this franchise.
There even was a direct interference in the events of the main plot by Kid during the "Mystery Train" story arc (Manga: 818-824, Anime: 701-704), which Aoyama said was just because it's been a special occasion and that he wants to separate the series more again.[1] He already draws the line in not depicting the everyday life of the Magic Kaito characters in Detective Conan and officially declaring Akako Koizumi and everything related to her as non-canon to Conan's world, also saying that real magic doesn't exist in it, explicitly placing the series in parallel universes sharing characters and some events.[27][28][29][30] Despite this, there was at least one subtle allusion to Pandora by Kaitou Kid saying in the "Twin Bets" case (Manga: 862-864, Anime: 746-747) that this gem isn't the one he's looking for, hence giving it back. Aoyama also denied the Black Organization and the unnamed organization from Magic Kaito being one and the same.
Kaitou Kid also appeared in original spin-off media of the Detective Conan franchise, like OVAs, movies and games (see above).
Trivia
- The plot of the first Detective Conan movie, The Time-Bombed Skyscraper, was intended as a story arc for Magic Kaito for a while. Gosho Aoyama said that he already wrote the plot back in school, and considered it for Yaiba once, but it didn't fit the kind of story it was, and then for Magic Kaito, but there wasn't any opportunity to integrate it. When he got told that Detective Conan was getting a movie adaption, he proposed the plot for this project, but says that he regrets it by now, since the antagonist was based on James Moriarty and he would have preferred to tell a story like that in the manga. Because of this, Ninzaburo Shiratori was originally designed as a character for Magic Kaito before transitioning him to Detective Conan together with the plot he debuted in.

I: Kid is also a very popular character. Could you tell us the details of his creation, and your future plans for him? Is he going to be involved with Conan and the black organization?
A: Well, he's originally from my previous work called "Magic Kaito". I created that because I really liked Arsène Lupin and his grandson Lupin the 3rd. And recently he got involved a little with the black organization during the Bell Tree Express case (the mystery train case from vol 78) but from here on out I don't think he will very much. - ^ https://www.shogakukan.co.jp/books/09122081

Comment! I needed a nemesis for my detective!
Design: He looks pretty cool of course, because he originally is the protagonist of another manga series. But for every reader who doesn't know Magic Kaito, his guest appearances in Detective Conan could feel a little bit disconcerting. I for one have the biggest fun while drawing him!
Concept: I wanted to have a powerful antagonist for Conan, someone like the Fiend with Twenty Faces from the works of Edogawa Rampo. And suddenly it occured to me that I drew such a character some years ago! From that time on it was decided that he would have guest appearances. Naturally I talked at length about it with my editor back then... who voiced his misgivings. So I tried to make Kaitou Kid's first appearances not too over the top. - ^ Magic Kaito, Volume 1, Chapter 4 - Kaito Kuroba and Aoko Nakamori go on a date in Tropical Land.

Topics: "Black Star" Special in the "Conan" TV series!
"Black Star" was part of a 2-Hour-Detective Conan-TV Special that ran in January of 2001. Its name was: "Atsumerareta Meitantei! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid". ["Gathering of Detectives! Shinichi Kudo vs. Kaitou Kid"] There's a magnificent scene during which Kid gets confronted with Shinichi Kudo. Because the adaption was set in Conan's world, the magic scene with Akako was left out. - ^ Magic Kaitou Treasured Editions: Playback Episode Interviews
The Scarlet Temptress
There she is! Mistress Akako! To be honest, she, as practitioner of black magic, is the reason who drove me into the corner the most during Kaitou's appearances in Conan. Well, you just have to accept these works as parallel universes. (grin) - ^ PLAYBACK EPISODE from Volume 5 (Referring to the scene from chapter 36 during which Akako Koizumi summons Lucufer)
As I thought, Akako uses red magic! (Fortunately Akako doesn't exist in Conan's world (laughs)).

A: "They're different, right? In MK he's the protagonist, and in Conan I try to make him look like cool and there's also Akako in MK."
