Ano Kata (あの方 That Person ) is what the Black Organization refer to their boss as. The true identity and gender of "That Person" is still unknown, with only a few insignificant facts about them revealed in the manga's 15 year (and counting) run.
Known information
- The boss uses the first few notes of the song Nanatsu no Ko to encode his/her phone number. The number is #969#6261, which was purposefully made non-functional by Gosho Aoyama to prevent prank calls. The number might have a Tottori area code; but it is uncertain because of the way the number, including the area code, was altered to prevent prank calls. It is worth noting that Haibara reacts to the word Kurayoshi – a city in Tottori province, when she notices Shinichi Kudo had taken an interest.[1]
- The operatives dress in black, which Akemi says is supposed to resemble crows. This is probably an expression of the boss’s dress code preferences.
- He/She uses alcoholic codenames for agents.
- The boss is very careful. Vermouth says, “The boss is always careful to the extreme. He’s the type to ruin the plan by overthinking it.”[2]
- Vermouth is the boss’s favorite for an unknown reason and he/she allows her some degree of independence.
- The Boss thought Akai Shuuichi could become the org’s silver bullet.[3] In that regard he/she's more like Vermouth than Gin who doesn't believe a single person who can take the syndicate down in one shot exists.
- For some reasons, the boss likes and enjoys reading mystery novels (just like the father of Shinichi Kudo)
It was a war zone, the sound of bullets flying and screaming of the ones who were hit some cried out for help that was not to come. This was the sound that rang throughout the building of the Black Syndicate headquarters. The FBI CIA and the Silver Bullet had attacked full force.
Kudou Shinichi leaned against the wall breathing hard; quickly he poked his head round the corner and bought it back again just as fast, it was all clear. Shinichi nodded his head to the ones behind him and they nodded in return. Together they began to move forwards once again.
Shinichi ran down the long hallway with both hands rapped round his gun, he held it up in line with his face really to shoot any who crossed his path.
Camel came to front and bent down close to the door they had reached Shinichi follow by standing of the other side of the door. Jodie came closer and then to Camel's side while Vermouth went to Shinichi's; James Black and the thought dead Akai stood in front of the door.
' This is it, ' Shinichi thought as he glance at his team, ' This is what I have been waiting for since Conan. Anokata! At last we will stop your evil ways. '
Shinichi let Camel break down the door as he was stronger in body then he; soon they all rush in the room with their guns raised to the person there.
Shinichi stare at the silhouette of a man standing with his back to them as gaze out the window his hands were held behind his back his form was one of grace. Anokata did not even seem to notice them being there.
" Anokata! " Vermouth was the one to break the silence, " I once warned you that a Silver Bullet would pierce your black heart. And look now its thanks to him Kudou Shinichi that we have overthrown you! "
The man slowing turn to face the one who had destroyed his empire. All there gripped their guns holding their breathes and hearts slamming against their rib cages.
Shinichi blinked and blinked again at the sight of who was before him.
Before him was Anokata who had a serous look on his face that seemed to have to place there and Anokata was none other then... Head Inspector of Gunma, Yamamura Misao! ? ! ? !
Speculations
The organization uses clever codenames, passwords, etc. based on mysteries and history. If the boss is behind the naming scheme then perhaps the boss has an interest in detectives and mysteries.
It is most likely that he/she is the Moriarty to Kudo Shinichi's Holmes. Leaving room to think that the game will end when he/she appears as in "The Final Problem" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Fan speculation has led to many theories concerning "That Person"'s identity, ranging from Vodka to Yusaku Kudo to even one of the Detective Boys after having taken APTX 4869. In a "Who is That Person" fan poll in Shonen Sunday, Professor Agasa was ranked the most likely suspect, while Gin was voted in a Case Closed FUNimation community poll.
