Biography
Masaki graduated from Nagasaki University. After his graduation, he moved to Tokyo[1]. And then he made his debut as a scriptwriter in 1999, via the anime Digimon Adventure. Later on, he did organizer and screenplay work for several other anime. He is sometimes credited differently, for example, all of his works in Detective Conan anime are credited under his hiragana, "まさきひろ". On the other hand, in the anime Detective School Q, his works are credited under his kanji, "広真紀".
Meanwhile, he also published some novels, his very first novel ever published was called "Oedo Frankenstein" (大江戸フランケンシュタイン), in 1994[1][2].
Style analysis
The most pronounced difference in Masaki's work is the unexpectedness of the truth of the case; most of his works contain very unusual plot direction, in contrast to those standard anime original plots. Moreover, he also likes to bring diversity to the Detective Conan anime, the majority cases he wrote take place in different locations (For example the Kotenguyama mountain from The Scenic Lookout with the Broken Fence), also have different kinds of characters like Ninzaburo Shiratori, enriching Shiratori's character by depicting his passion on wine.
His screenplays usually contain some meaningful backgrounds, and he likes to mingle them into murder cases. In The Tragedy at the OK Corral, he added some knowledge with regards to farrier, a person who specialises in shoeing horses. In Red Wine Indictment, he stated the trivia that red wines ought not be shaken because it will take a long time for the sediment at the bottom of the red wine to settle again. In The Malice Hidden Behind the Masque, he mixed some opera elements into his composition and created a parody version of Hamlet. In The Skilled Hawk Hides His Crime, he stated that eagles will not actively attack humans, but crows will... He also wrote some creative cases, such as The Synchronicity Case, as it appeared the idea of "murder exchange", which is quite rare in the Detective Conan anime.
