What's "School"? (ガッコってなんだ ,Gakkotte Nanda) is the third chapter of the manga of Yaiba. It was written by Gosho Aoyama and drawn by him and his assistants and first released in Shōnen Sunday #41/1988 on September 7th, 1988 and later on reprinted as the third chapter of volume 1 on April 18th, 1989. It shows Yaiba Kurogane's first day at school, where he almost instantly gets into trouble again.

Plot

A brand new day at the Mine residence and Kenjuro Kurogane is already leaving again after just moving in yesterday, making Raizo and Sayaka Mine celebrate that the two troublemakers are gone. But just like he announced the day before, he left his son with the Mine family. Yaiba Kurogane follows Sayaka to school, wanting to know what it is. While her classmates are fascinated by the spikey-haired young boy, flooding him with questions, he quickly finds himself in his second battle since his arrival in Japan - against the choleric classroom teacher of Sayaka, Mr. Sudo, a fifth Dan in Kendo...

Referencing

• You'll Be Taking Care of Me (Yaiba Manga: 2) : This chapter is a direct continuation of the second one, set on the morning of the day right after the one in chapter 1 and 2. Yaiba Kurogane also tries to sense Mr. Sudo the same way he learned to sense animals in the jungle and like he did with Mutou in the second chapter.

• A Samurai's Pride (Yaiba Manga: 253): Yaiba turns around and tries to sense Takeshi Onimaru's presence at the end of the chapter like he did with Mutou in the previous and Mr. Sudo in this one. While the audience laughs, Sayaka Mine is the only one who notices what he's doing.

Magic Kaito

• Sayaka Mine's friend, the blonde girl with the twintails and the glasses is later on revealed to be Keiko Momoi during her second middle school year all along. In the final chapter, after a timeskip of three years, she, her friend and Sayaka go to Ekoda High School together and talk about the relationship status of Kaito Kuroba and Aoko Nakamori.

Trivia

• Besides Keiko Momoi, there sometimes is a girl in the background of the class room looking similar to Aoko Nakamori. It's never confirmed whether it's supposed to be a younger version of her too or if it's just a case of similiar looking character designs, though.
