It turns out that development just proceeded in the wrong direction, as I've been able to make a simpler version here, in this sandbox (as of 1/24/2025). Some things that have changed from the current Latest news template:

Major:

• Many more parameters on the front end, though not very complicated.
  • Added slots to allow for semi-automatic switching of episodes
• Simpler back-end structuring

Minor:

• When the names of the next episode/next manga chapter are unknown, it is now possible to leave them blank
  • Previously "???" was used as a placeholder
• Fixed the 20px margin of the <hr> element (was originally "----" in wikitext) when template is viewed using the Chameleon skin
