At the hotel, the group meets a reporter named Hajime Tsurumi, a novelist named Fumie Masuko, historian Yasukatsu Someji, and archeologist Michiki Tanzawa. She killed the two men because they left the excavation team and her husband Charles to die. Charles had found a tetsuno (metal) hairpin and meant to ask the team what it was in Hiragana, but the ink bled through and they misunderstand the word to be English alphabet n-u-e instead.
