Part 1

All the people witnessed the publishing company president named Daisaku Katsumoto fall to his death.

Murder

Conan and the police deduced the culprit must be a person inside the building, who assaulted the president and rushed to the first floor. The required amount of time should be at least 10 minutes. The three suspects all had good alibis since the cameraman named Keisuke Ogino was drinking beer with froth bubbling on the surface, the magazine editor named Kaori Tsukihara was having coffee which still had steams, and the writer named Kazutomo Sodesaki was smoking a cigarette with smoke still coming out. Takagi performed repeated experiments to show that the threshold limit for froth, steam or smoke to stop coming out was 7 to 8 minutes. Or was there something else going on?

Through investigation, all of them confessed they held grudges with the murdered. Katsumoto had used their names to publish a fake article claiming that a popular actress was having an affair while engaged with a man. The "man in the affair" was actually her half-brother which the actress had to keep secret, because he was born from an affair her father had. Pressure and the cancellation of the marriage drove her to commit suicide. The half-brother was attacked by her fans and is still in a coma. They had prepared to take legal action against Katsumoto for the article.

The culprit is Keisuke Ogino. He sprinkle some purification salt from his pocket into his beer, causing it to froth long after the 7 minute limit. Therefore, he manipulated the time of his alibi; the evidence lay within his jacket pocket. Since he had to fabricate the alibi on the spot, he took the salt bag from the funeral's bag, which he didn't dispose of. He killed Daisaku Katsumoto because he had published a false article that lead to the suicide of the actress it concerned. Keisuke was disgusted at Katsumoto's disregard for the victim, and that the president only did so for sales, disgracing the company he was passionately working for. He also couldn't bear the thought that the actress, an old classmate of his, could have died believing that he intentionally put the picture in the false article. He, in a fit of rage, killed the president when he threatened to make another misleading article if the lawsuit wasn't dropped.

Manga to anime changes

• The anime adds an original scene between Subaru and Haibara, where Haibara says that Subaru is an unreliable knight, and then Subaru answers that he will protect her and call her princess. According to director Yasuichiro Yamamoto in Haibara Secret Archive released in 2019, he decided to add those scenes to fill up the episode duration. As a result, he got scolded by Gosho.

• The bridge painting at Keisuke Ogino's apartement is Nakaotoro Bridge, which first appear on Rainbow Color Kidnapping.
• The suspects are named after real-life Shonen Sunday employees :
  • Daisaku Katsumoto (勝本 大作) is named after Dai Katsuki (勝木 大), a Shonen Sunday editor ;
  • Keisuke Ogino (荻野 啓佑) is named after Keisuke Hagiwara (萩原 啓佑) and Katsunobu Ogino (荻野 克展), both Sunday editors ;
  • Kaori Tsukihara (月原 香) is also named after Dai Katsuki, and "Magazine GREAT", for which she is an editor, is named after "Great Katsuki" (gureito Katsuki), one of Dai's nicknames ;
  • Kazutomo Sodesaki (袖崎 和友) is named after Tomokazu Sodesaki (袖崎 友和), a Shonen Sunday editor.
