Situation

Kogoro, Ran, and Conan are all walking and are very hungry, so they stop by at a western restaurant that Kogoro frequently visits, where they meet Shigeru Hanaoka, the owner of "Karantei" Restaurant, his wife Reiko Hanaoka, the new waitress Saki Yoshizawa, and the cook Minoru Wada. There is construction work going on next door, so the restaurant constantly shakes from the work, causing spills and broken plates. They go back the next morning only to find Shigeru Hanaoka, who wanted to go swordfish fishing in Hachijou Island after long time, dead.

At first it looks like the construction made a vase fall over and hit him on the head, killing the owner, however, the construction wasn't happening at the estimated time of death. Could this be more than just an accident?

After a further investigation, Conan stuns Kogoro and says that Hanaoka was already dead when the vase fell. The culprit knew of their plan and used it to his own advantage. For their plan to succeed, Hanaoka must sit at the exact spot. That's why the real culprit chose a more reliable method. He approached Hanaoka from behind and, using the frozen sea bream hit him on the head. After the culprit killed Hanaoka, he rushed to return the sea bream to the refrigerator and removed the gloves, this is because the murderer had to go somewhere as fast as possible more specifically, to where Ran and Conan were, the video shop and declares the real culprit to be Saki Yoshizawa. The gloves wore by Yoshizawa has a red lipstick stain on the tip of a finger and its the same color as Saki worn yesterday. Since she was in a rush to get back, she wanted to removed the gloves as fast as possible.

Yoshizawa confesses and reveals twenty-one years ago, Hanaoka was a fisherman living on Hachijou Island. There, he swore a girl named Aiko Morimura, to share their future together. But Hanaoka said that he wanted to study cooking, so he abandoned Aiko and left the island. Aiko sends him off in silence, not even telling him about her pregnancy. Aiko waited she gave birth to their child alone, and kept waiting Hanaoka's return while bringing up her child. Then, after waiting for so long and suffered all the hardships, she died alone last spring. She's reveals to be the daughter that Hanaoka never known that he has, Saki Morimura.

After her confession, Yoshizawa proclaimed that she could never forgive her father for what he'd done, but Kogoro informed her that Hanaoka hadn't forgotten about Aiko and even kept a photo she took of him fishing, so he could always remember her. Despite that, she continued to lambaste him, stating that her mother suffered as a result of having to raise her alone and that she would still be alive if he had contacted her, before breaking down in a fit of tears. Kogoro reminded Yoshizawa that her actions weren't justified despite Hanaoka's past actions, and that there are ways other than murder for her to understand his feeling.
