Biography
Akiko Kawashima joined the production of the Detective Conan anime in 1996, starting with Pro Soccer Player Blackmail Case, and served as a regular key animator for anime episodes. In 2002, she began to work as an animation director, starting with the 1st part of The Secret Rushed Omission; she replaced Keiichi Ishida, a former regular animation director, in terms of the position. Thereafter, she officially delegated the studio for Detective Conan production, being the core animator of Sunshine Corporation.
Starting with the 2nd part of The Similar Princesses, the episodes that she worked on started to credit the studio as production cooperation, after director Masato Sato became the director (most likely because that those episodes were not fully outsourced so the company name was not credited). Back then, director Sato altered the anime character design - from Masatomo Sudo to Mari Tominaga; owing to the lack of proficiency on the strangeness character design, her exquisite drawing style was affected upon that. However, there were many signs indicating that she was impersonating those superb animators' style from that time - the quintessential Keiko Sasaki styled character eyes (episode 360); along with the character face shapes in Mari Tominaga's style (episode 367).
Kawashima's art style in Detective Conan anime can be described as unsteady; yet she contributed to many impressive frames and even performed exceedingly wonderful at times with her corrected frames (especially during the Masato Sato directional era when there was a shortage of animator). Nonetheless, she ceased serving as animation director after the 2nd part of Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story 7; her position was then offered to Ayako Tauchi. She eventually quit the production team after finishing the key animation work of Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story - Fake Wedding, along with the studio.
