After a hiatus of eight years, the infamous gentleman thief known as Kaitou Kid reappears in Tokyo. Kaito Kuroba, a cocky magician and class clown from Ekoda High, takes it upon himself to catch the thief, but finds that the connection between him and Kid is far deeper than it seems to be at first glance. First appearance of Kaito Kuroba/Kaitou Kid, Aoko Nakamori, Keiko Momoi, Erika Konno, Ginzo Nakamori, Detective Konno, Toichi Kuroba, Chikage Kuroba, Konosuke Jii, and Kaitou Corbeau. Kaito takes over from Jii what Toichi started and becomes the next Kaitou Kid. At this point of time, Kaito targets expensive objects as Kid to attract the attention of whoever might know something about (or had something to do with) what happened to Toichi.

Kaito's string of successful heists as the new Kaitou Kid has attracted the attention of a shadowy criminal syndicate that also pursues valuable jewels. As the two parties clash over the Indian sapphire known as Blue Birthday, Kaito may just uncover a clue as to the truth behind his father's death... Kaito surprised Aoko by putting 'Happy Birthday Aoko' on a building display followed by fireworks. First appearance of Snake and Magic Kaito Sub-boss.

The Blue Parrot, a billiards bar owned by Kaito's faithful assistant Konosuke Jii, is about to go out of business. Unwilling to let the bar die, Kaito sets out to win the Legendary Cue, a diamond-inlaid cue that had been swindled from Jii years ago by the billiards club across the street. Kaito and Aoko pretend to be married couple to enter the bar.
