Part 1
One evening, Kogoro, Ran, and Conan watch the latest Detective Samonji episode based on the ongoing mystery novel series, written by Nintaro Shinmei. Just when Kogoro expresses his annoyance at the series (just because Conan and Ran have outguessed him about the culprit's identity), Shinmei's daughter Kaori appears and hires him to find her father and mother, who have been missing for two months, they find clues that lead them to believe the Shinmeis have been kidnapped, with Mr. Shinmei only being able to leak hints in his scripts.

Manga to anime changes
- While Ran and Kogoro are arguing over which shows to watch, Conan recalls Haibara reminding him that if he wants to get his body back, he needs to help Kogoro to become a real detective. Doing so will result in more leads to the Black Organization. In the anime, he reminds himself of the objective as Haibara doesn't show up until The Girl from the Black Organization and the University Professor Murder Case, whereas the manga version of episode 116-117 follows it.
Translation changes
Anime
- The names of the characters in the Funimation Dub are:
- Nintaro Shinmei - Jonathan Nantz
- Mrs. Shinmei - Mrs. Nantz
- Kaori Shinmei - Katie Nantz
Trivia
- Yamada previously appeared in Tenkaichi Night Festival Murder Case.
- This may be the same, but possibly a different Yamada, who was on the answering machine of the victim in Distinguished Family's Consecutive Accidental Death Case, since he was a writer.
- This is the first episode that deals with the fictional character of Detective Samonji in any way.
- This is the first episode that Conan begins referring to the "Men In Black" or "Syndicate" and an organization, and more precise, "Men in Black's Organization."
- This is also the first episode that Conan voiced his goal of "I have to turn this bumbling detective into a real master detective and obtain information on the Men in Black's Organization," although he thought it, rather than spoke it.
- Finding information was obviously his goal, but the other part of that statement has yet to have been voiced in the anime until now.
- This is the first time that Detective Takagi hands Conan a piece of evidence to look at, after Conan asked him for it.
- This is one of the first cases that displays Hattori and Conan's brain working in sync with each other, while conversing over the phone, before Hattori bowed out of the competition and hung up, saying "The rest is up to you."
- This is the first episode that Hattori tells Conan/Kudo that "You should come down to Osaka. I'll treat you to some udon," beginning the trend of him wanting to take Conan out for Osakan food.
- This is the case when Conan began to tranquilize Kogoro, however, due to a mishap, he accidentally knocked out the chief editor, whose voice is a complete mystery, since he never spoke in front of Conan.
- This is the episode that it is stated that there is only one tranquilizer dart in the Stun-Gun Wristwatch.
