Part 1
Conan, Kogoro, and Ran take the overnight North Star Express to Hokkaido to meet a former client. On the train, they meet up with a series of people. However, in the night, a murder case occurs when a burglar seemingly kills a jewelry trader, and escapes through the window.

Conan noticed that the plot is very similar to an unpublished novel written by his father that had been stolen ten years before. However, unable to contact Yusaku Kudo, Conan takes the case into his own hands, and finds his mother on the train.
Part 2
Conan reveals to the suspicious woman that he knows her identity - it is Yukiko Kudo, his mother, in disguise. As they discuss the case, Kogoro calls all the passengers to witness his inaccurate deduction, enabling Conan to figure out the trick. However, a worried Conan recalls that in the novel, the detective boy who solved the case was murdered by the trap he set for the criminal. Yukiko volunteers to act as a decoy to help him find the proof.

Trivia
- This episode seems to connect with Yusaku's stolen manuscript that was mentioned in Detective Boys Survival Case, although a stolen manuscript did show up at the end of that episode.
- The Train in this case is JR Freight Class EF510-501 Hokutosei (北斗星).
- This is the third case that Yukiko Kudo is involved in with her son. The other two cases are the Conan Edogawa Kidnapping Case and The Cornered Famous Detective! Two Big Murder Cases, however, unlike in those two cases, she is in another new disguise, and appears to be completely unrelated to Conan in any way, shape, or form.
- This case brought up a jewelry store robbery backstory, that took place recently, in which Conan was completely uninvolved in it, due to being on a camping trip recently.
- Even in Hokkaido Prefecture, Kogoro Mouri is renowned, and Detective Tamura stated, "He's cursed. They say everywhere he goes, a crime occurs."
- This is the third case that takes place aboard a train, the other two are The Shinkansen's Bomb Case and The Train Trick Murder Case, however it is only the second case that takes place about a murder, and the only one based on an unfinished, stolen manuscript.
- This is the first case that shows a bamboo sword for Kendo.
- In this case, Yukiko set herself up as bait in order to help solve this case.
