Plot
Conan was at a second-hand bookshop where he managed to get a hold of some old crime books. Ran had told him about the bookshop, as she had heard about it from Sera. As "coincidence" would have it, Sera also happens to be in the area and speaks to Conan. She asks him to open a soft drink bottle for her, as she has oil on her fingers from her motorcycle. Conan opens the bottle and the contents spill all over him due to the carbon dioxide. Sera is sorry about it and suggests that Conan take a quick shower and change in her hotel room; her hotel is "coincidentally" right across the street. Conan refuses, sensing a trap, and there have been two recent bomb attacks on hotels, in which mysterious codes were sent to the hotels beforehand but were not published by the press. The explosions always targeted a single hotel room, but there were never any deaths or injuries. The perpetrator is still on the run, which is why Conan prefers to avoid hotels for the time being. Sera says she actually got her hands on one of the codes, which she uses to lure Conan into her hotel room after all. On the way to the hotel, the two are followed by a mysterious person.
While Conan is in the shower, Mary signals Sera to search his backpack for the antidote to APTX 4869. Conan, knowing her true intentions, tells Sera while in the shower that he does not have the antidote, much to Mary's frustration. Later, Conan and Sera look at the code on her PC in the hotel room, which had been leaked to the internet. The code is written in hiragana and reads: "Te Sa Hi U N N Ya Yu Ze Yo Ku Ji N Ni" (てさひうんんやゆぜよくじんに), with the "Te" in a square. The bomb threat said that if the code is not solved by 5 PM, the hotel room to which the code refers will be blown up. If guests are evacuated or the police are called, the bomb will go off immediately. The solution should be sent to a specified address, there is only one attempt to reply. The hotel management thought the letter was a joke, but after the deadline, the room with the number 3420 actually exploded.
Masumi offers Conan a cup of tea; Conan realizes from the tea bags in the used cups that someone else must be hiding in her hotel room, presumably a person from England. Before Conan can voice his suspicions about this person's relationship to Sera, they hear shouting from the hallway. A man is shouting at a cleaning lady about why there is such a strange piece of paper in his room, even though his room should have been cleaned. Sera and Conan look into the hallway; the man is Danji Rinzaki, a hotel guest staying in room 2114. The cleaning lady who received his complaint is called Seiko Ronda and was also the one who cleaned the room, but she knows nothing about said code. Rinzaki suspects that the guest before him heard about the bomber and wanted to scare the next guest with a fake code. Masumi grabs the note from his hand and looks at it with Conan. The code is similar to the code on Masumi's PC and reads: "Hi Ni N Se Yo N U Hi Yu Ya Ji Ku" (ひにんせよんうひゆやじく), again with the first hiragana in a square. Sera keeps the note while Rinzaki coughs and tells Ronda that his room needs to be cleaned again. After Rinzaki has disappeared back into his room, a bellboy named Aruto Kureishi comes to Sera, Conan and Ronda and asks if anything has happened.
Sera and Conan go with Kureishi to the front desk, where they learn that the bomber called the hotel earlier and announced that there was a code in room 2114. Kureishi was still around because he had brought Rinzaki's luggage to the room. When they arrive at the front desk, the receptionist is answering a call, again from the bomber. She puts the call on speakerphone so that Kureishi, Sera and Conan can also join in the conversation, at Sera and Conan's request. The bomber repeats his rules from the last bomb threats, that he will call again at 5 PM and will need to be told the solution. His voice has been made unrecognizable with a voice-changer. Kureishi says that the bomber must stop this madness, but the bomber just scoffs that a simple bellboy cannot lecture him; the group wonders if the bomber can see them. Shocked, Kureishi falls to the floor while Conan and Sera frantically look around to see if the bomber is in the crowd of people in the hotel lobby. Conan asks if they have another attempt at an answer, but the bomber does not respond, repeats the time he expects the solution and hangs up.
Sera wants to call the police, but the receptionist does not think that it is a good idea, as the hotel had called the police during the second attack, which is why the bomb was detonated there before the deadline. Conan shows the receptionist the code from Rinzaki's room, which the receptionist says looks exactly like the other two codes. The police had sent the codes from the first two attacks to many hotels so that they could recognize potential new codes as genuine. Masumi and Conan already know the first code, but they do not have the second code, and the receptionist does not want to give the code to two children. With only an hour to go until 5 PM, Conan thinks about who he could call who has enough authority to get the second code. He thinks of Takagi and Kogoro when Eri Kisaki suddenly appears at the reception desk and greets Conan.
