Plot

Conan and Sera explain the situation with the bomb threat to Eri Kisaki and show her the codes of the first and the current third bombing. They need Eri's help to get the code of the second bombing from the receptionist, as Eri has enough authority as the hotel's legal advisor and as the wife of the famous sleeping Kogoro to convince the receptionists. Although Eri does not feel like name-dropping her estranged husband, she is persuaded by Conan and Sera and manages to get the code from the receptionists. The second code is: "Mo Ro Yu N Tsu Ji U Se Pi Ku Yo Ni Ya N" (もろゆんつじうせぴくよにやん), where, as with the other codes, the first hiragana is in a square.

Eri, Conan and Sera walk through the hallways of the hotel and discuss the codes. A pattern quickly emerges with the previous codes as they already know the solutions, the room numbers of the rooms that were blown up. In the first attack, room 3420 was blown up; if you exclude the "Te" in the square in the first code "Te Sa Hi U N N Ya Yu Ze Yo Ku Ji N Ni" (てさひうんんやゆぜよくじんに), the other syllables in the anagram give the Japanese number word for 3420 (さんぜんよんひゃくにじゅう Sanzen Yonhyaku Nijū?). In the second attack, room 2614 was blown up; if you exclude the "Mo" in the square in the second code, the other syllables in the anagram give the Japanese number word for 2614 (にせんろっぴゃくじゅうよん Nisen Roppyaku Jūyon?). If this system is applied to the third code "Hi Ni N Se Yo N U Hi Yu Ya Ji Ku" and the "Hi" in the square is omitted, twelve different numbers can be formed from the syllables, but due to the numbering in the hotel, only six of them are actual room numbers: 1124, 1214, 1412, 1420, 2114 and 2410.

Eri is surprised that this time the bomber is not communicating by email but by telephone, which is much riskier. The crux of the matter is the placement of the third code in Rinzaki's room 2114. Only three people would be able to have placed it: cleaner Seiko Ronda, bellboy Aruto Kureishi and the hotel guest in the room himself, Danji Rinzaki. Eri suggests questioning the three suspects in Sera's room 2113, as it is right next to Rinzaki's room. Sera splits off from Conan, ostensibly to tidy up her room, but in reality she has to warn her mother. Mary is not enthusiastic about the questioning, but on the other hand she also wants to prevent an explosion from triggering an evacuation of the hotel, which would force her into the public eye. Then they would have to change their safe house again and cause trouble for a "certain someone". Mary listens to the interrogations from a hiding place on her daughter's cell phone.

Ronda is questioned first. When she cleaned Rinzaki's room, there was no note with a code. She did not really feel like cleaning the room either, because Rinzaki always smokes secretly despite the smoking ban, and Ronda dislikes the smell of cigarettes. Rinzaki is a novelist who is a regular guest in room 2114 whenever he has a deadline approaching. He used to go to other hotels, but they banned him after he was caught smoking in the rooms. Coincidentally, these are the two hotels where the first two attacks took place. However, the owner of this hotel is a big fan of Rinzaki, which is why his misbehavior is forgiven. As Rinzaki was once again coughing a lot at check-in, he was assigned a humidifier on very short notice, which Ronda brought to his room. There is also a humidifier in Sera's room, as she had probably also been coughing a lot (which is of course really Mary's coughing). Although Rinzaki gets a lot of leniency from the hotel, he still complains regularly; the tiles in the bathroom were too slippery and there were fewer toiletries than on previous visits according to him. In addition, bellboy Kureishi had to search for his room key for an hour until it finally turned up under the bed.

In the interrogation, Kureishi confirms the incident, but partly blames the hotel because they are still using traditional keys and will only switch to card keys next year. He realizes that he is being questioned because he brought the luggage to Rinzaki's room, whereupon he interjects that he did not go into the room himself, as Rinzaki is a regular guest and it was therefore not necessary to show him the room and the furnishings. Instead, Kureishi just waited at the door with the luggage and handed it to Rinzaki when he came to the room. That is why he could not have placed the note, says Rinzaki. Eri asks if Rinzaki's room next door has the same layout, which Kureishi confirms; the bed, sofa, humidifier and table are in the same place as in Sera's room.

Eri, Conan and Sera go to Rinzaki's room, but the author does not want to be questioned. Eri threatens the hotel with possible claims for damages, so Rinzaki agrees to cooperate, but asks Eri to wait a moment first. Conan asks Eri whether the hotel could really claim damages, whereupon she admits that this would probably not work. Astonished, Sera says in her mind that Eri reminds her of her mother when she was still an adult. The next moment, the door opens and a pretty woman wearing makeup, jewelry and a skimpy dress comes out and briefly introduces herself as an editor from Daigakukan before quickly leaving the hotel and the trio wonders if she is actually an editor. Rinzaki now invites Eri in, at which point Sera and Conan also come in. The room is actually identical to Sera's room. Eri asks him if he has noticed anything else in his room besides the note. Rinzaki answers by the negative, saying that apart from perhaps an unsightly crease in the bedspread, he had not noticed anything. In the meantime, the bed has been completely rumpled, as Eri notes; Rinzaki goes red and retorts that he was taking a nap.

Conan goes to Rinzaki's laptop and reads a page from his crime novel. When Conan tries to press the Enter key to turn the page, Rinzaki gets extremely angry and shouts that Conan should keep his hands off his keyboard. His remarks give Eri, Conan, Sera and Mary a flash of inspiration. Rinzaki throws the three of them out of his room; Kureishi and Ronda are still waiting outside. The culprit will call again in ten minutes, but despite the time pressure, Conan, Eri and Sera seem completely relaxed.
