Plot

Professor Agasa is driving the Detective Boys through the snowy mountains of Nagano when the kids learn that they are not going on a ski trip but instead visiting the Nagano police headquarters. Ayumi, Mitsuhiko and Genta still wonder why and Agasa tells them to ask Conan. The latter reveals that Ran and Kogoro were supposed to be with them as well, and that when they asked detective Yui for hotel recommendations in Nagano, she invited them to come by the police headquarters so the Nagano police could thank them for all the help Kogoro has provided (sleeping Kogoro). However, Kogoro later fell ill and Ran cannot attend either since she has to take care of him. Conan thus has to come to the headquarters in their stead to let them know, though reluctantly, since Kogoro insisted he still had to go on location. Agasa then says that it has been a while since they have not seen the Nagano detectives (Yamato and Yui), and Haibara remembers the botamochi incident from before.

At the police headquarters, the Detective Boys are greeted by Yui Uehara, who is sad Kogoro could not come. Conan explains that he was doing fine just until yesterday. She then hands them a bag full of boxes of "Shinshu Soba", which Agasa comments are rare and delicious. While the Detective Boys stared at the boxes, Conan wonders to himself if Kogoro actually sent him there only to fetch the soba boxes. Yui offers them a tour of the police station, but Conan refuses, saying that they had a ski trip planned. The other Detective Boys are however very excited and they thus decide to go forward with the tour. Before that, Agasa asks them to go to the restroom, and Genta shouts "Detective Boys back here in five minutes". This reminds Yui of her childhood with Yamato and Morofushi, who just happened to arrive. They say that they searched for lost cats and dogs, and that Yui was following them. She then blushingly says that she was six years younger than them. The Detective Boys are then shown around the station, and use their equipment, including riot shields, motorcycle helmets and sasumatas. They also visit the martial arts dojo and the marching band's auditorium. At the end of the tour, the Detective Boys enjoy a lunch of curry at the police station's cafeteria, with Genta commenting that he wanted soba. Agasa then says that they did not expect to be eating at the police cafeteria and Haibara comments that at least the food is good. Mitsuhiko, Genta and Ayumi then all say that visiting the police station made them ready to tackle a case. Hearing this, a group of four people wearing the same jackets approach them. Kaori Nanjou comes up and says that they also had a detective league. Shichisuke Kasai adds that they are however not little kids anymore. Yuuta Kitakura adds that they are now more like a middle-aged detective league. Tamaki Itou behind them says that Kaori was simply reminiscing the "good ol' days". Mitsuhiko recognizes Tamaki as a famous horror-themed influencer, who along with her "Compass Detective League" explore presumably haunted locations. Mitsuhiko says that their Youtube channel is famous because it usually ends with Tamaki running away from the locations screaming. The group is named "Compass Detective League" because all four members have a cardinaly direction in their surnames, Kitakura containing "Kita", meaning "North", Kasai containing "Sai", another reading for "Nishi", meaning "West", Nanjou containing "Nan" meaning "South" and Itou containing "tou", meaning "East". Tamaki says that she wore sunglasses to not be recognized, but they were found out anyways, with Kitakura commenting that the logos on their jackets gave them away. Ayumi and Genta say that even though the "Compass Detective League" was also a former young detective league, the Detective Boys have more members. The four content creators reply that they used to have five members, but their fifth member, Takehiko Nanjou, Kaori's older brother, died in a fire three months ago. Luckily, Shichisuke and Kaori were out shopping and avoided the fire, and Yuuta saved Tamaki who was sleeping in the living room, but could not locate Takehiko. Takehiko was found dead under a fallen shelf. The reason they are at the police station today is that police finally managed to restore of the data from Takehiko's burned cellphone. She pulls out a photo of them as kids, which was restored from Takehiko's phone, where we can see Takehiko in the middle of the group of five. He was their leader. Ayumi notices that they all have similar badges and Tamaki explains that she made them for the five of them and the four members pull out the badges from their pockets, which they have kept since then. The Detective Boys also show their badges, which double as walkie-talkies. Mitsuhiko asks them if they are out filming a video and they say that indeed, they will film here in Nagano. Tamaki says that they will be summoning the "Sacred Light of the Dead". Agasa thinks that it is about the legend of an old with a fire that cannot be extinguished and that will chase you if you run. The frightened Detective Boys ask how they can escape it then. Agasa says that you need to put a shoe on your head. Kasai and Kitakura say that that is the legend of Rōjinbi, a pretty well-known yōkai in Nagano and Shizuoka, but that they are in fact after a more obscure legend.

It is the legend of a restless ghost that stays attached to people and the things that were dear to it and that it light candles and incense around the person it haunts to let them know it is still lingering on this Earth. Haibara understands from what they say that will try to invoke the ghost of the deceased Takehiko. Kitakura explains that they are indeed trying to do so, but that they will be appeased once they see that he does not show up. Tamaki angrily says that they will not know if they do not try, with Kaori trying to calm her down by saying that they never had a real spirit show up in their videos. Shichisuke adds that if the final video does not do Takehiko justice then they will simply not upload it. The Detective Boys ask the four content creators where they will film and are excited when they find out that they are going to the same ski resort as them. The kids ask the Compass Detective League if they can watch them filming and the four adults accept, saying that this is kind of ambiance Takehiko liked. Later, the group arrives at the burned remains of the lodge where Takehiko died. Tamaki leaves a bouquet of flowers in his memory and briefly prays. Since they do not have permission to film at the scene of the fire, they move away from it to the edge of the ski resort. They then lay a candle on the snow along with their four detective badges. Filming starts, as Shichisuke, Kitakura, Kaori, the Detective Boys and Agasa watch Tamaki from the camera. Tamaki starts with the intro and explains the legend and that they will try to invoke Takehiko's spirit. She then places her phone with Takehiko's picture next to the candle and covers the setup in a glass dome. She starts invoking his name, but does not stop. Mitsuhiko notes that it is started to get windy. As she still does not stop, Tamaki is asked by her friends to stop, which she finally does. She is relieved, knowing that Takehiko is at peace. However, at the same time, everyone looks at her in fear, as the left sleeve of her jacket catches fire. Conan runs towards Tamaki, wondering if what is happening is actually real.

Trivia

The real-life Nagano Prefectural Government Office.
The Office in Detective Conan.
  • The Nagano prefectural police is located in the Nagano Prefectural Government Office, in the city of the same name. The building houses not only the Nagano police, but the prefectural government, as well as municipal services and the prefectural assembly. The current building was erected in 1967, replacing an older building from 1913[2].
  • This is the second case to mention Shinshu Soba (信州そば), the Shinano style buckwheat noodles. They were previously mentioned in the murder on the prefectural border case.
  • The Hakuryu Ski Resort is named after Hakuba Ski Resort town, most likely the Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park (エイブル白馬五竜&Hakuba47 Winter Sports Park).
