Plot
Jinpei Matsuda cracks open the haunted mansion's mailbox and finds an electricity bill of over 30,000 yen, which he and Wataru Date see as confirmation of their suspicions. Meanwhile, Rei Furuya has his instructor Hachizo Onizuka on the phone, who is not at all happy about the incident during class time. He wants the group to return to the police academy, but Furuya replies that the residents of the haunted saw them in uniform and might flee. Meanwhile, at the police academy, Kenji Hagiwara "borrows" Onizuka's Mazda RX-7, supposedly at the instructor's request, as he assures the school's mechanic.
Matsuda and Date keep ringing the villa's doorbell when Furuya comes to them and tells them that he was able to persuade Onizuka. Now the three men in the villa open the door; the police students ask them about the strange events that Shinichi and Ran saw. The men pretend they know nothing and think that the children have just imagined things. Hiromitsu Morofushi and Hagiwara arrive; Morofushi has gathered materials to recreate the events. The burning fish were created by placing small amounts of the insect repellent camphor on a strip of aluminum foil and lighting the camphor, which causes them to generate propulsion when burned by reducing the surface tension in the water and appear to swim through the pond like fish. The black snake was created by putting sugar, baking soda and ethanol in an iron bowl with sand and lighting the ingredients, which creates smoke and a snake-like structure.
The men ask where the proof is that they pulled this on the children, and also that there is no explanation for the photo with the ogre face, but Furuya says that all you need is a dark place. He proposes to test it inside the mansion, unless of course the men have something to hide. The men allow them entry, but Hagiwara holds Shinichi and Ran back. Going in is too dangerous for children, so they should wait with him in the car. But Shinichi wants to get to the bottom of the matter as a detective and follows the others into the house. There, Furuya explains that the image is an optical trick that can be created with the camera lens in dark surroundings. In the house, Shinichi then discovers an ogre mask that looks exactly like the ogre face in the photo that the man had shown them earlier.
The police cadets then confront the men with their high electricity bill. The men show them a room with lots of computers, and argue that they are day traders who trade in the United States and Japan, which is why the PCs run day and night. The children had disturbed them at work, which is why they wanted to scare them with the tricks so that they could have peace and quiet again. Date looks at the date display on his watch and tells the men that they must have been very busy yesterday, July 4th, because the American stock market went crazy because of a statement by the American president before a committee of the Federal Reserve. The men quickly agree that they were busy all night. The police cadets grin with satisfaction: July 4th is the American Independence Day, and the American stock market is closed on this holiday. The police cadets want the men to come clean about their electricity consumption.
