Detective Samonji (名探偵左文字 Meitantei Samonji?) is a murder mystery book character and series originally written by author Nintaro Shinmei, whose daughter Kaori took over writing after her father's death. There is a TV adaptation, with Osamu Kenzaki playing the role of Samonji.

Background

Samonji's full name is Samonji Matsuda (松田左文字 Matsuda Samonji?).[1] In the Funimation Dub, the character's name is Detective Simon. The murder mystery book series was originally written by author Nintaro Shinmei. He had written around forty novels and ended the last one ten years ago, with Samonji and a criminal falling into a fire, stating that Samonji was dead. In the current year he tried to write a new novel with a code embedded in it, but he passed away before completing it. The novel as well as the series was continued by his daughter, Kaori. The additions to her father's novel were three assistants based on Kogoro, Ran, and Conan respectively.[2] Later on, Conan is seen purchasing the 44th novel in the series with Kaori's name on it.

The original novel series has received multiple television follow-ups, with Samonji's role being performed by the actor Osamu Kenzaki. The identity of the murderer changes each time to maintain viewer interest. A new television series based on the most recent books has already started up. Both Ran and Shinichi enjoy the series.
